This book is clearly written by a person who knows how to get quality referrals. Bill's approach is easy to learn with some mental rehearsal and once you adopt a referral mindset and focus on quality of performance to develop relationships the rest is easy. I turned this into a complete training program for telesales personnel to help move us away from cold-call telemarketing.

Let somebody else do the selling for you

Referrals now is an excellent book that explains how to obtain more business by asking for referrals. Most friends and existing clients are more than willing to recommend your product or sevices if you just ask for it. Sales people sometimes view asking for referrals as a sign of weakness or problems in the business. This is not true.

If you want to build up a business very quickly without a lot of overhead, this is the best method. It would be adviseable to first read the book "Masters of Networking" by Ivan R. Misner. Referral business has a lot to do with networking, so you must be ready to do favors for other people who help you out. Forgetting to help somebody else who has helped you will be very detrimental to your business.

Just asking somebody for a referral is not really good enough but asking the person for a personal introduction increases your chances dramatically for closing the deal.

Don't read the book all in one go. Read a chapter, think about how you can apply it, write down what you think is best for you and experiment with it.

The New Business Paradigm

Bill Cates' "Get More Referrals Now!" is awesome.

Based on a referral, interestingly enough, I picked up a copy of this book and blasted through it in a matter of days. What makes this book so outstanding is the recognition of the need to consolidate your current business model into one that is referral-driven.

Think about it for a minute--if you have car problems, need a good doctor, or want to sign up for music lessons, who do you ask? Inevitably the answer usually is a friend or associate for a referral as to who THEY use. Based on this concept Cates' work expands upon intrinsically human relationships and provides a variety of techniques for business professionals (although this book has utility outside the business world, it is primarily written for individuals/companies looking to exponentially grow their client base using a referral-based approach to marketing) to strengthen existing relationships while simultaneously generating new business.

Cates divides his book into five parts, "baby-steps" if you will, of changing from the old standard of cold calling (Brrrrr cold indeed and fineable now too under the Do-Not-Call list!) to adopting a referral-based business.

Part One "The Foundation: Adopt a Referral Mindset" lays the track for the rest of the book and makes the reader mentally itemize why in fact referral-based marketing is superior.

Part Two "The First Skill: Enhance Your Referability" describes the actions you need to take that will result in clients placing more confidence if your abilities.

Part Three "The Second Skill: Prospect for Referrals" provides step-by-step instruction on HOW to get qualified referrals in the door.

Part Four "The Third Skill: Strategic Networking" goes one step beyond Part Three and now delves into the necessity of getting your office/company on board with the referral method transitioning to a holistic concept of a referral-based corporate strategy.

Part Five "The Fourth Skill: Target Niche Markets" delves into the intricacies of selecting profitable key areas to focus your referral-based approach on capturing more business.

Cates's greatest accomplishment I think in this book is its ease of use and practicability. "Get More Referrals Now!" does just that; similar to Tony Robbins philosophy in "Awaken the Giant Within" Cates focuses on modifying your perception on the value of a concept which in this case is the referral. With increasing legislature limiting cold calling to business to business and limited consumer buy-in calls, Cates' book is more relevant and necessary than ever.

Of the dozen or so books I've read over the past couple weeks, I'm ordering enough of this book and one on scuba diving I really enjoyed to use as stocking-stuffers for my friends and associates. A great read and one of those books where your initial investment of time and money will provide a lasting and valuable income stream. Five stars.

I have read all the Black Dog books to this point (1-4, including the 1.5 short story) and I enjoyed the series quite a bit. But despite that, I would recommend that you skip this novella. Anything you might need to know for later books can be summed up in a single sentence (and I suspect it will be anyway, since an author generally can't rely on readers to read all the interstitial novellas and shorts).

Why do I suggest you skip it? Because truthfully, this novella just isn't up to the author's usual standards. The writing is fine, per se - clear descriptions, interesting dialog, lively action, good smooth flow. Hailey Edwards has a solid grasp of the mechanics of her profession. Unfortunately, the plot and characters are a severe disappointment.

This is a short, sweet, simple romance - and there is nothing wrong with short, sweet, simple romances! But a romance of this kind lives and dies by its characters. The author tried to shoehorn the existing character of Mai into her planned story framework, but Mai didn't want to go. Mai's behavior and attitudes change by the scene as the character we know from the previous books fights with the plot constraints the author has laid out for this one. And the new characters - the love interest, the childhood friend, even the controlling father and submissive mother - are mere bland sketches with scarcely little more depth than the labels I have presented here. Without solid characterization, the story limps along on illogical and inconsistently applied romance tropes.

This could have been a sweet little love story. With a bit more length it could have been a fascinating look at what it means to have fated mates on the border between tradition and self-actualization. But it was neither of these things. Instead, it was just a hot mess.

(And I'm not even going to talk about the con scenes. Bah!)

A great addition and side series to the Black Dog books!

As a fan of the Black Dog series of which this series is a spin off I can easily say that this is a fun little book and the beginning of what has the potential to be a interesting new chapter in the world of the fae. Of course if you haven't read Hailey Edwards Black Dog series you may be in for a little confusion when it comes to reading this book as a lot of the characters from that series appear in this book as side characters (Thierry Thackerey, the Black Dog's daughter, being one of them seeing as she is best friends and housemates with Mai) and of course Mai herself, this books lead character, was herself a side character in that series, and incidently she was one of my favourite characters in that series too.

So Mai gets her own story here and the chance to be centre stage and while I did really enjoy reading this novella I did find that Mai herself lost some of the wonderful shine, sparkle and sheer gutsiness that made her so special before. It made me more than a little sad as she didn't seem complete somehow for me, saying that the overall story did make up for it in some ways. What we have is the fae mythology being used perfectly here and tells in a roundabout way of how kitsune, the fox spirit fae that Mai and her family, find their mates, of how the females are in charge of it and how they test and choose their mates. BUT while that is the real crux of the story it's more complicated than that when Mai finds herself kidnapped by a man, another kitsune, kidnaps her at a comic convention and claims that he knew her before, something that Mai has no memory of despite remembering his brother and considering him a friend. Ryuu, Mai's kidnapper, had plans for Mai as he wants her as his mate but does he really want Mai or is about revenge against Mai's father who ruined his family and exiled them from the kitsune clan? The answer is a complicated and intense affair of which I'm not going to mention for fear of spoiling the book for others.

I will say that this book is fun in itself and it gave me the chance to learn much more about Mai, her family and the kitsune culture in general and that is something I wanted to learn more about right the way through the Black Dog books. Edwards is very good at crafting great characters, full of spunk that are intriguing and that you need to learn all you can about. With the Black Dog books adding to the mythology and backstory you really get a great sense of the fae world in which Mai lives, about how the varying fae cultures work within themselves and as a whole and this is the aspect of Edwards work that I love the most as her fae world is so interesting to me and I want to learn so much about it meaning that I will be looking forward eagerly to any future instalments of Mai's story and anything else centred on this fae world that she may produce in the future. It's great work and I personally LOVE it!

Would I recommend it to others, well yes I would but I would say that reading the Black Dog books beforehand is definitely beneficial and will give you a better base and understanding before going into this book. It is a great read and is a great addition to the stories of this fae world.

Fun spinoff to a solid NA urban fantasy series

When I buy into a series, I really do buy into it, as evidenced by the fact that after enjoying the first book in Hailey Edwards’ Black Dog urban fantasy series, Dog with a Bone, I went on to read books 2, 3, and 4 over a span of just a couple of days. More on the series at a future date, but suffice it to say that the story gets more and more complex with each installation in the series. But the one fun, bright spot that remains constant no matter what kind of nasty stuff is flying in badass half-fae Conclave marshal Thierry Thackeray’s life is her BFF, Mai Hayashi.

Mai is a kitsune, and like the rest of the females of this type of fae, she devotes quite a bit of her time testing the males she meets to try to find the one fated to be her mate. But she doesn’t dedicate all her time to mate-hunting; she’s an avid cosplayer, and at the beginning of this novel, she’s actually managed to rope a reluctant Thierry into donning a costume and partnering up with her at a convention.

At the con, Mai bumps into an old friend, who just happens to be accompanied by a hot Mr. Mysterious dressed as Dean Winchester from Supernatural. “Dean” finds a way to get under her skin with just the heat of his stare. But it’s been a long time since she’s seen her friend, and he and Dean shock (and outrage) the stuffing out of her when they drug Thierry and kidnap Mai. Though she threatens them with the considerable wrath of her badass bestie as well as that of her powerful and doting father, what she learns of their motives rocks her sheltered, fun-loving world to its very foundations.

Althought there is an element of mystery in this novella, it’s not the whodunnit type; it’s pretty clear what happened, at least as far as the kitsune who kidnap Mai are concerned. More, it’s a question of what they know of what went wrong is accurate and, more importantly, why things happened the way they did. What’s notable about how Edwards handled this is that she really allowed Mai’s character to shine through in the way she handles learning that her world isn’t as straightforward as she thought it, and the blame could well lie with the father who has always indulged her, even above her sisters.

Mai’s determination to get to the bottom of the problem she’s presented with as well as to learn both sides of the story really shed light on some of the depths in her character, which was only hinted at in the other books in this series. More, the way she takes her stand shows that not only does she have a mind of her own, a strong sense of justice, and the ability to hold firm when push comes to shove, but she also possesses a political savvy that makes her an asset to those she chooses to back.

On the mushier side of things, since this is still an urban fantasy romance, of course I need to talk about two very important aspects of this novella: Ryuu, the hot-to-foxtrot kitsune with a cause, and the way in which the love story unfolds.

First off, I have to mention that Ryuu is just adorbz! There are just so many ways he’ll appeal to readers looking for a hero to swoon over. Thanks to the responsibility thrust upon his shoulders, he’s alpha in all the ways that count; he’s very conscious of the burden that comes with leadership, and he knows that while it means he gets to make decisions for his people, it also means that when those choices are hard, he can’t pass the buck to anyone else. And in Ryuu’s case, those choices are matters of life or death. Despite the weight he carries, which is only added to by the tragic events that have shaped the boy he was into the determined man he is now, he still has many moments of oh-so-cute geekiness, and his innate sweetness will make marshmallows of the ventricles of your heart.

As for Ryuu and Mai’s relationship, it starts out with a lot of push and pull and, of course, bickering. Through it is an abiding respect for one another that shines through even when they are at each other’s throats. And in the end, they both find a way to balance their responsibilities–to themselves and to their families—and their desire to be together. Theirs is a rocky road to love, but it’s a journey I enjoyed taking alongside them, especially as, despite the whole issue of fated mates, it was very clear that they both made a choice to be together and, more than that, to be partners in the truest sense of the word.

Can this be read as a standalone novel? Actually, yes. Although Black Dog fans will better appreciate the dynamics of Thierry and Mai’s friendship, not to mention some of Thierry’s kiss-and-tell moments about her so-yummy incubus mate, it’s not necessary to have read the Black Dog books to appreciate this one. I’d still highly recommend it, though! And I can’t wait for the new spinoff series, Gemini, set for release in January!

About the Author
Baoying Wang is an associate professor in Waynesburg University. She received her PhD degree in Computer Science from North Dakota State University, Masters degree from Minnesota State University of St. Cloud, and Bachelors degree from Beijing University of Science and Technology. Her research interests include data mining, data warehouse, bioinformatics, parallel computing. She is a member of ACM, ISCA, and SIGMOD. As professional activities, she serves as a reviewer and/or a committee member of many international conferences and journals.

Ruowang Li is pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics and Genomics at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. He was fascinated by the complexity of the molecular biology, so he studied Biology and Computer Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, from 2007 to 2011. His has been developing and applying computational methods to identify the molecular factors affecting individuals chemotherapeutic drug responses as well as cancer patients survival status. He is currently a National Science Foundation graduate fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Marylyn Ritchie.

William Perrizo is a Professor of Computer Science at North Dakota State University. He holds a PhD degree from the University of Minnesota, a Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a Bachelors degree from St. John's University. He has been a Research Scientist at the IBM Advanced Business Systems Division and the U.S. Air Force Electronic Systems Division. His areas of expertise are Data Mining, Knowledge Discovery, Database Systems, Distributed Database Systems, High Speed Computer and Communications Networks, Precision Agriculture, and Bioinformatics. About the Author
Ann-Louise de Boer is an associate professor and research fellow in the Department of Information Science, University of Pretoria, South Africa. She has BA, BEd, MED degrees and a PhD in curriculum design, and was recipient of the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Award for Academic Achievement in 1990. She is also the CEO of Herrmann International Africa, the African arm of the global network of Herrmann International, originator of Whole Brain� Technolog.

Pieter H. du Toit is a senior lecturer in the Department of Humanities Education, Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He holds a BA, BEd, MEd and PhD in Higher Education. He is programme coordinator of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) and the MEd (Educator Professional Development). His interests include action research, learning styles, professional development and education innovation.

M. Detken Scheepers is the Head of e-Learning at the Department for Education Innovation, University of Pretoria, South Africa. About the Author
Randall Billingsley is a finance professor at Virginia Tech and an award-winning teacher at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His research, consulting, and teaching focus on equity valuation, risk management and derivatives-based strategies, and regulatory finance. He holds an M.S. in economics and a PhD in finance from Texas A&M. In 2006, he published a financial analysis book with the Wharton School. In addition, his research has been published in many professional journals, including the JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF BANKING AND FINANCE, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, and JOURNAL OF FUTURES MARKETS. He is the former vice president of the CFA Institute. At Virginia Tech he advises the Student-Managed Endowment for Educational Development, which manages an equity portfolio of about $5 million.

Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. A prolific author, Dr. Gitman has published more than 50 articles appearing in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, the FINANCIAL REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, JOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, FINANCIAL SERVICES REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION, and other scholarly publications.

Michael D. Joehnk is an emeritus professor of finance at Arizona State University. In addition to his academic appointments at ASU, Dr. Joehnk spent a year as a visiting professor of finance at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Arizona State University. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), he served as a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee and of the Council of Examiners of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. He also served as a director of the Phoenix Society of Financial Analysts and as secretary-treasurer of the Western Finance Association and was elected to two terms as vice president of the Financial Management Association. Dr. Joehnk has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, five popular books, and numerous monographs. In addition to co-authoring several books with Dr. Gitman, Dr. Joehnk wrote the highly successful paperback tradebook INVESTING FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. He also has served as editor and contributed to several other prominent books. His articles have appeared in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF BANK RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, AAII JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, BELL JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS, DAILY BOND BUYER, FINANCIAL PLANNER, and other publications. Dr. Joehnk served a six-year term as executive co-editor of the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH. He and his wife live in Flagstaff, Arizona, where they enjoy hiking and other activities in the nearby mountains and canyons.

About the Author
Ruth Barrons Roosevelt coaches traders around the world to trading excellence. She is exceptionally well qualified to offer such guidance to traders, as she has extensive trading experience and is to this day an active trader. Her experience covers multiple time frames, from position trading in virtually every futures market, to active and intense intraday trading in currencies, T-bonds, and S&P futures. She has traded S&P's intensively and actively since inception of trading in 1984, down to and including 1 minute bars. Her trading experience also includes active trading of mutual funds.

She is a former Vice President of Prudential Securities and of Thomson McKinnon. From 1981 to 1986 she headed the International Moneyline trading desk at Rudolf Wolf (New York). Before that she was a stock and futures broker at Drexel Burnham Lambert where she broke records by opening 250 accounts in one month. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, she is a member of the New York and California Bar Association. A frequent contributor to "Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities," she writes articles on the psychology of successful trading. She is the author of "Exceptional Trading" and co-author of "Living in Step" (McGraw-Hill, 1976). As founder and director of the Wall Street Hypnosis Center, she works with Wall Street professionals to achieve their optimal effectiveness.

Ruth has appeared on numerous national and international television programs including: CBS, NBC, CNN, and WWOR Evening News, CNBC, NBC The Today Show, Good Morning America, Japan Public Television, Nippon Television, Hungarian Public Television, Finland Television Channel 3, and the David Letterman Late Night Show. The 12 habits of highly successful traders.

This book clearly explains 12 habits you must develop to be a successful trader. These habits are developed through having the right attitude toward trading.

Preparedness-You must be prepared to trade, do not take trades with out the right thought put into the trade and methods applied to them.

Abundance consciousness-You must believe that there is plenty of money to be made in the markets, and you deserve to have your share.

Risk Taking-You have to take the right amount of risk for your profit goals but not put yourself in a situation of blowing up your account.

Thinking in Probabilities-You must trade in a way that gives you an edge in the markets. The odds should be in your favor.

Discipline-You must follow your own methods and strategies that give you that edge. Always follow proper psychology, risk management, and method.

Courage- You must have the ability to pull the trigger and make the trade. You can't paper trade and back test systems forever.

Accept Loss-This is the most important habitude, you must decide what price will let you know you are wrong and sell to stop your losses when that price is hit. Not doing this can lead to the destruction of your account.

Comfortable with Uncertainty-You must understand that anything can happen at any time in the markets, and accept that.

Optimism-You must have a positive attitude when trading.

Open-Mindedness-You must be open to all possibilities, and be able to change styles and systems when markets change.

Long Term View-You have to understand that each trade is only one among hundreds
and that in the long term your systems and methods will be successful and you will profit even after draw downs in equity.

Detachment-You must keep your self worth and ego separated from your trading. You are not your trades. You will trade better if your life is balanced.

The book does a great job of explaining why each of these habits are essential to success and how they tie together in the way a trader must think. You can learn these principles the hard way through losing money and time trading with the wrong mindset or you can just read this book, believe the author and follow her good advice. This book is short and to the point, it does not waste a page or a sentence, I believe the price paid will be worth it to beginning traders or those that need to work on their trading psychology. The book is small but the principles it teaches are huge.

A necessary read

Because the psychological element looms so large and has direct bearing on the outcomes of trading, it is necessary for anyone who trades to self-reflect upon their attitudes and habits and how such things affect the decisions they make in trading. Most of us are not good at clear and honest self-analysis, hence the existence of psychology as a profession, and even those of us who are pretty good at identifying and correcting bad habits sometimes need a refresher course. This book is very well written. I believe it should be required reading for several different groups of people: those just starting to get into trading; those who have been trading and are experiencing difficulties; and even those who are doing everything right should pick this book up - perhaps once a year or so - as positive reinforcement for things that might have gotten a little hazy during that time. I personally would not recommend any sort of "lengthier" or more involved treatment of the subject. A concise and clear book like this is sufficient.

The only thing I felt was a wee bit of a turn off was the author's occasional interjection of what I tend to label 'new age' type therapeutic verbage. I've never been a fan of that. Fortunatey it is seldom here and does not detract from the overall benefit.

This is the only book I've read by Ruth Barrons Roosevelt and I can't imagine that I would read anything else by her as this is already complete and thorough. In fact I think any "longer" discussion would probably muddle the issue and person would not benefit as much.

Psychology is the key to successful trading

This book did not receive much press, and is short in length. However it is powerpacked with the information every trader or investor needs to keep their emotions out the the way of their trading decision. It took me many years to learn this, and this is the best book for the money on the psychology of trading. Although more expensive, the other excellent book I recommend on this subject is Mark Douglas TRADING IN THE ZONE, also available from Amazon. Both get my highest recommendation. I have been trading and investing since 1993, and they are the best I have seen or read. I purchased both of these top rated books, in my opinion, from Amazon.com because they have the best prices and widest selection.
