In 1917, in Paris, she married Alban Ernan Forbes Dennis, a British diplomat working firstly in Marseilles and then in Vienna as Passport Control Officer, a cover for his real role as MI6 Head of Station with responsibility for Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia. Her marriage to Forbes Dennis was to be a long and triumphant partnership. Forbes Dennis died in July 1972 in Brighton. Bottome studied Individual psychology under Alfred Adler while in Vienna. This would become useful in her work both as a teacher and a writer. In 1924 she and her husband started a school in Kitzbhel in Austria.

Stormy and prescient
By HH
"The Mortal Storm" lays bare the myth that nobody knew what was going on as Hitler rose to power. Bottome brilliantly weaves the stories of many classes of German society -- the wealthy, professionals, communists, peasant farmers, the disaffected, and women in general -- with German tradition and the ease with which a generation of German nationals were persuaded by the Nazi ideals. It also includes descriptions of concentration camps alongside insight into the rising tide of political and Jewish persecution.

The plot is riveting and the characters are believable. However, the characters frequently make big principled speeches when they talk to each other, often enough to hamper the book's main message from coming through. This is a minor complaint, however. "The Modern Storm" is most interesting: reading it is like looking into a crystal ball in 1938!

Excellent book written 1938!
By V. C.
This book is excellent. It was written in 1938! Think of the risk the author took to write an anti-Nazi book mentioning Hitler's name at that time in history. The film was interesting and was the reason I read the book. The film is fluff in comparison to the book.

excellent read
By Esther
Saw a reference to the book on TV advertising the movie. Prefer the book if it is available. I was not disappointed. I purchased a used copy. It was in perfect condition. This book was so well written. There wasn't much I did not know about the year of the acion, but it did give me the background of the beginning of the turmoil. I am looking for more books by the author. We'll Always Have the Movies: American Cinema during World War II
