About the Author
I started working in the technology side of venture capital more than 20 years ago. I became a GP at Oak Investment Partners about 15 years ago. I concentrate on health care and financial technology investments with the Oak HC/FT sector fund. I blog, and I've published five books so far. I started programming computers in high school. Before graduating with honors from Harvard College, I wrote code for oil refinery optimization and the ARPA-net. I then wrote code for network protocols, compilers, composition systems, operating systems, DBMS internals and applications, large scale financial transaction processing, document processing and workflow, various hardware components and enterprise systems.

Hope Prevails....a source of hope for us all

Form the moment I saw the cover of the book and read the title, Hope Prevails Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey through Depression, I was intrigued as to how Dr. Michelle Bengtson would marry the roles of "Doctor" and "Patient" into a single book. She is a knowledgeable practicioner, and is able to explain the clinical side of depression in a way that is both accurate and factual as well as easily understandable to the reader. As a storyteller, she shares her journey through depression in a way that draws the reader in to read her story. She shares her hope and walks alongside each one of us as a friend and trusted companion. I thought Hope Prevails would be a good read for me to use to help those I know who struggle with depression. And it does just that! What surprised me was how much I have discovered that Hope Prevails is for me. As someone who loves those in the valley of depression. And also as someone who may not have a diagnosis of depression, but who still struggles to believe God's truth in my life. In my opinion, Hope Prevails is a source of hope for every one of us!

Good for me after depression, not during

My favorite thing about this book is the playlist of songs she provides at the end of each chapter. I was delighted to discover this because I used truth conveyed through music to help amidst my depression, too!

Glad I read this book but I'm not sure it would have helped me in the middle of my bout with major depression. I would have perceived it as another Christian perspective telling me to "just try harder and do all these things and pray and believe and write out these verses and you'll be healed!" That's NOT what she's saying, but I know that's how I would have perceived it from where I was at.

What she says in the book is absolutely true, but may be difficult for someone who, like me, was raised in a Christian environment with lots of truth but VERY little grace.

I will use the book as a reminder tool to turn back to if I ever slide into depression again; my perspective about God and faith has grown as a result of my struggle and the book provides an excellent collection of Biblical truths to be reminded of.

Depression is absolutely physical and spiritual and she does a good job of addressing the spiritual issues that often underlie the treated symptoms.

Twelve chapters of Dr. Bengtson’s riveting personal journey suffering with severe depression, interacting compassionately with the reader, and prescribing methods at the end of each chapter such as writing down a bible verse, helping the depressed person make choices and changes daily in order to focus on health and well-being instead of the self- destructive path that depression leads them to further harm is a welcomed book. A book that finally looks at the spiritual aspect of a person suffering from depression.

As a board certified clinical neuropsychologist with over 25 years of experience diagnosing and treating patients with medical and mental health disorders, Dr. Michelle Bengtson has seen the devastation that depression brings. So for her to walk through the valley of depression this gives so much credibility to this book for me. She knows what someone is going through, they are not alone. This reader found golden nuggets in every chapter. This book is written to the depressed person to give hope, a hope that sustains, and a hope that prevails.

Chapter 1, “This Thing Called Depression,” addresses many facts about depression. Dr. Bengtson
is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist with over 25 years of experience diagnosing and treating patients with medical and mental health disorders, she has seen the devastation that depression brings first hand. Of course, the data is backed with statistical proof but one fact that I struggled to wrap my mind around is 9 million women suffer from depression. Depression is the leading cause of disability.

Chapter 2, “You Are Not Alone” Dr. Michelle shares the truth that Christians suffers from depression but often hide their depression. I can relate to this statement as I kept praying for healing and it just did not come quickly enough. She shares, “If you want freedom from depression, you have to let go of some myths and lies, and replace them with truth, God’s truth.”

Chapter 3, “The Underlying Truth about Depression” this chapter reviews the various causes of depression. It’s Chemical one may have a chemical imbalance, its genetic one may have a family member or a parent with depression. It’s secondary from another cause so primarily one has an illness and depression develops, I saw this in my husband after his back surgeries. It’s reactionary from a major life change for example one has a job loss. It’s spiritual and she devotes many chapters to this area. The rest of this chapter is devoted to the telling of her story. As she shares, “Nothing compares one to experiencing such conditions of depression first hand. We can never fully understand another person’s suffering until we go through it ourselves. Such is the case with depression. When I went through the valley of depression, I tried all the same treatment recommendations that I offered to my own patients, and they helped but they were suboptimal and I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. It was only when I started understanding that we cannot ignore the spiritual side of depression.”

The chapters that follow share a complex healing plan that includes how to recognize your enemy, how to recover your joy, how to reclaim your peace, and how to reestablish your identity and much more.

The chapter I most identified with is Chapter 8, “Know Your Worth” I found freedom in Chapter 8, which was entitled “Know Your Worth.” In this chapter, Dr. Michelle Bengtson shares about how God is 100% for us. Yet we have an enemy who is 100% against us and it is one of his primary purposes to bring us down and demean us and distract us from living the victorious life God provides. In this chapter, Dr. Michelle said, “Depression doesn’t define our worth, and God delights in us as his masterpiece.” Through reading this chapter, I realized just how much I have allowed words of others to determine how I feel about myself and when Dr. Michelle said, “Tragically, we allow words, attitudes or actions of others to influence how we feel about ourselves” Lastly, a quote that really says it all, “The authority to speak on my worth is Jesus.”

“Hope Prevails” offers the insights that I learned about the spiritual side of depression, what the enemy does to entrap us in depression, and what by the grace of God, the enemy cannot do. “Hope Prevails” shares God’s help, hope, and healing for managing depression. Dr. Michelle Bengtson wrote this book to offer hope: a hope that sustains, a hope that is real, a hope that prevails.

I highly recommend this book, I am a Master’s Prepared Nurse in discharge planning and we help with many homeless, this book would be great in the homeless shelter and the transitional housing center. This book is a must read for any homeless ministry, any ministry that has people that are coping with challenging life issues that are interrupting and are facing social issues affecting mental health. This book would be a nice addition to the Set Free Ministries, Freedom In Christ Ministries, and Pregnancy Centers.

About the Author
Rowland S. Miller is a Professor of Psychology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He has been teaching a course in Close Relationships for over 25 years, and he won the 2008 Teaching Award from the International Association for Relationship Research (primarily as a result of this book). He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and a winner of the Edwin Newman Award for Excellence in Research from Psi Chi and the American Psychological Association.

Insightful & Interesting

Generally, textbooks are dry affairs that one puts down once class is over. For Intimate Relationships, however, I found myself reading the material independent of class study; I honestly found it that interesting. The material is often directly applicable and you cannot help compare the research and examples to your own relationships.

About the Author
Dana Claxton is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist of Lakota Sioux descent. Her work includes film and video, installation and performance art, and centres on concerns of beauty, justice, autonomy and spirit. She is represented in public collections, has been shown internationally, and has received numerous awards including the VIVA Award from the Doris and Jack Shadbolt Foundation for her commitment to contemporary art in Vancouver; and in 2007 became an Eiteljorg Fellow sponsored by the Ford Foundation. She has held positions as Adjunct Professor at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Vancouver; Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; 2009/10 Ruth Wynn Woodward Endowed Chair in Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby; and was a founding director of the Indigenous Media Arts Group, Vancouver.

First I read their eyes were watching God which I highly recommend. Since eyes was so good I got this one while I love somethings about it like the personnalities and the day to day interactions of the characters. I also enjoyed the way Zora makes these characters so familiar that you feel like your in the setting with these guys as the walk and talk and clown amongst each other. This story is a bit hard to follow because she is bouncing from one character to another and most characters have one paragraph, some one sentence before she moves to another then another. It becomes annoying. I gave it four stars because its worth to be a part of this bouncy zig zaggy novel. But if you really want to witness a master piece you must read "thier eyes were watching God" by Zora. Guys it is a love story but its not mushy and its put together better than this one.

Immersive Anthropology

A very interesting book. Ms Hurston came from the poor rural African-American communities in central Florida, moved north and became well educated, studying anthropology with F. Boas, then returned to her native places with the intention of documenting their language and lifestyle. It's an uncommon situation -- can you be an objective observer and at the same time a member of the community you're studying? On the one hand you certainly lose objectivity; on the other you know your subject in a way a stranger never could. The result is a book unique in its genre, and one I personally recommend.

Zora Neale Hurston is an American master. This book documents her submersion into the voodoo/hoodoo scene in Florida and New Orleans providing unparalleled insight into the lives of post-slavery/pre-civil rights African Americans in the South. The inventiveness of the characters, the tragicomic tales, the vocabulary, the authenticity of Hurston's portrayals, and her high-risk investment in anthropological participant observation, combine to make this book a classic, not to mention a great read.

it seems like that could have added some fun to the storyline

The main character never develops a close relationship, with anybody. She likes everybody but distrusts everybody. Since she is suppose to discover and develop her magical capabilities, it seems like that could have added some fun to the storyline, but nothing ever happened. No skills or magic was ever mentioned. Maybe giving her a trusted friend and some newly discovered magic would have lightened up the whole book!

A carefully crafted masterpiece full of twists and turns and moments that will turn you into a sobbing puddle of fangirl - or bo

My love for Katie McGarry and her novels is no secret. I've been obsessed with her writing since Pushing The Limits and I fell even more head over heels in love with her after reading the first Thunder Road book, Nowhere But Here. I have been eagerly awaiting Walk The Edge, and by eagerly I mean salivating and chomping at the bit. Walk The Edge brings us right back into the crazy world of the Reign of Terror Motorcycle Club, and boy am I glad to be back.

Much like with the first book, Walk The Edge focuses on two people coming together and realizing the meaning of family, acceptance, and love. Unlike the first book, though, both of our main characters look at the Reign of Terror with skepticism. While Razor is a member, he also knows the club is keeping secrets - and that doesn't sit well with him. Not at all. Breanna, on the other hand, is pretty much petrified of the club because she grew up in Snowflake and has heard all those nasty rumors that seem to circulate anything and everything that is different. I honestly cannot tell you if I liked this book more than the first, or visa versa. Both are self contained - you technically don't have to read Nowhere But Here to understand Walk The Edge, but I do recommend it. On their own, each book is wonderful, swoon-worthy, and action packed - though, in Walk The Edge we get to see more of the action firsthand. I am in love with both. I adore Oz and Emily and Razor and Breanna, I couldn't pick between the two if you asked.

Breanna is a lot different from Emily, and I appreciate that. One of the reasons I love Katie McGarry's writing so damn much is that none of her characters ever feel the same. You would think with a multitude of contemporary novels she would slip into a certain mold and stay there, but nope! Every character is so different yet so real and so easy to relate to even if you have nothing in common. Breanna is just like that. She is freakishly smart, her brain works on a different frequency - that's what she tells herself. She loves puzzles, she loves solving codes and riddles and once she starts she cannot stop or rest until it is solved - it would drive her mad. She would kick ass at Jeopardy because she remembers weird, random-ass facts that no one would ever think of learning - and I think it's awesome. Breanna is also cautious, brilliant, thoughtful, and caring. She is patient, she is kind, and she learns from her mistakes as well as admits when she is wrong. One of my favorite part of Breanna's story line was seeing her shift from a smart girl terrified of the Reign of Terror because of rumors to someone who learned to respect their world and even begin to love them like family. My other favorite part of her arc, besides seeing her learn to stand up for herself, was watching her with her siblings. I have to say, at the beginning of the novel I absolutely despised Breanna's family. They treated her like nothing more than working trash and had a total disregard for what she wanted and what she needed. It was heartbreaking, and even more so, in my eyes it was unforgivable the way they treated her. Especially when she came to them needing their help and they shut her out, and then they punished her for the very thing she was going to ask for help on later. Assholes, the lot of them. By the end, though, there was a moment with Elise - the youngest, that sort of made my heart melt (and Breanna's too).

Now for Razor, oh my goodness gracious. I do have to say, I think I actually like him more than Oz. I don't know what it is. Maybe it was his unending faith in Breanna, maybe it was his sheer protectiveness and stubbornness. Maybe it was that edge in him that was missing in Oz. Razor is unpredictable when angry, but when with Breanna he was like a giant teddy bear. It was the cutest thing, I swear. From that first moment when he came up and fixed her phone, then tricked her into saying he could be her body guard, I was lost. Razor isn't perfect, let me tell you. He has his moments, but his angsty tantrums are so understandable it was hard to fault him for it. I love Razor, I really, really do love Razor. I mean, he offered to help Breanna - without involving the club - which could cost him everything. He could have been kicked out and who knows what else, but he did it really without a second thought. So yea, Razor is my cuddly grizzly bear and you can stuff it. Also, I think it was Razor's character arc that really made this book as fantastic as it was. Talk about knight in shining armor and all that jazz. Just, yummy.

Overall, Walk The Edge has definitely earned a place on my shelf of fame. It was perfect. It was the perfect balance between loyalty and self discovery. It was a carefully crafted masterpiece full of twists and turns and moments that will turn you into a sobbing puddle of fangirl - or boy. It is a must read, it is a book that will last generations and appeal to a variation of audiences. Walk The Edge is the type of book that you will struggle to put down. It is the type of book that will suck you in completely and you won't even know you are lost until it is too late. Katie McGarry is the queen of contemporary and she keeps on feeding my addiction. We're going to need a Thunder Road Support Group.

The Best Yet

Walk the Edge is a book that I was looking forward to ever since I fell in love with Nowhere But Here last year. It’s no secret that McGarry is among my favorite authors and she will always be an auto buy author for me since I can pretty much guarantee that I love anything she ever writes so I can’t say I was surprised by how much I loved this book. But, I think with every book I read by McGarry, I fall in love a little more. Her writing just draws me in, and her characters make me fall in love with them within moments of meeting them. With every new book I always say that it’s my new favorite McGarry book, so without further ado, WALK THE EDGE IS MY NEW FAVORITE. At least until the next one comes out HAHA.

Razor and Breanna’s story both broke my heart in different ways. Breanna is super smart and she comes from a big family. She’s right in the middle so everything seems to fall on her shoulders. I loved how she was with her younger siblings, but I absolutely HATED how her older siblings treated her. While I loved Breanna as an overall character, it broke my heart how she was afraid to be herself and how she wouldn’t stand up for herself. Enter Razor. As bad as everyone thinks he is just because he’s part of an MC, they are so completely wrong. I loved getting to know the guy under the cut, and he surprised me with how amazingly caring he was. Razor is the type that tough around the edges, but he has this huge heart underneath all the leather and it was such a great experience to see that.

I’m sure to the outside world, Razor and Breanna seem like an unlikely couple, but to see them together and to witness their relationship grow? Perfection. They really bring out the best in each other and I loved watching their relationship go from attraction to something meaningful.

Of course with this being a book about a motorcycle club, there was a ton of action, suspense, betrayal and puzzles to piece together. Add all of those things in with the slow burning romance and characters you can’t help but to love, that makes it one HELL of a book. The Thunder Road series is among my favorites and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Reign of Terror.

Emotionally Intense Romance

Told alternately from Razor's and Breanna's point of view, this story is a romance between two very likeable but very troubled characters. On the outside, shy, brilliant, and super-responsible Breanna doesn't have much in common with motorcycle club member and hotties Razor. To say that their worlds are different is a gross understatement. But on the inside both of them are struggling with trying to fit into their families.

Breanna is the 5th of nine children in the Miller household. Both the older four and the younger four have formed their own cliques and Breanna doesn't fit into either. She also has an unusual brain in that she has a near-photographic memory and a compulsion to solve puzzles of all sorts. This makes her feel like a freak at school as she tries to hide what she can do.

Razor is having trouble fitting in at the motorcycle club despite being made a full member when he turned 18. He knows his dad and his "brothers" are keeping secrets from him about his mother's death and has trouble trusting them. Since rumor has it that his mother's death was a suicide, Razor feels guilt that he wasn't enough to keep her living. When a detective offers some new information that his club brothers want to keep from him, Razor goes to Breanna for help.

Razor isn't the first person who wants to use Breanna for help. One of the football stars is blackmailing her with seemingly intimate pictures of her with Razor to write his papers so that he will get a college scholarship. The pictures, if posted online, could easily ruin Breanna's reputation and wreck her future plans.

This story was emotionally intense and I couldn't put it down. While I don't understand the appeal of motorcycle clubs, I could see how they were a family to Razor. I could also understand and sympathize with Breanna as she tries to find her own role in her family. This is also a good example of the perils of social media.

Readers who want a romance that will keep them reading don't have to look past this book. It was an amazing story.
