Practical Wisdom
By O. Halabieh
This book is a collection of words of wisdom on various topics covering aspects of both personal and business life. It is backed by Schulich's credibility both as a successful businessman and an inspiring philanthropist. The topics covered include economics, people management, investment, leadership etc. Of course, the book does not cover any of these areas in depth, but the learnings shared are appropriately framed and presented in a way that can be applied. Of relevance to my investment interests, Schulich's advice include paying close attention to companies cash flows, and not investing in growth stocks as they will sooner or later stale. In addition, a key to success in business, is knowing when to say 'No' and this cannot be stressed enough. It is much easier said than done, yet this learning is so central to success.

Don't let the number of pages fool you, this book is a very quick read - a day or two. It is written in a very entertaining and concise manner. Given the little time investment in going through it, and the amount of experience and knowledge behind it, it was definitely worth reading!

Business Smarts
By Edward Mendlowitz
There are thousands of lifetime lessons in business books, each with its own stories and weave. This is one of them but what makes it standout is that (1) I read it, and (2) I got some good ideas from it.

The author is a self made billionaire and one of Canada's greatest philanthropists. It reminded me of something my Uncle Marty said when I was very young and I asked him what he did for a living. He replied that he was a finance manager for a big company but what he really wanted to be was a philanthropist. When I asked what that was and why he wanted to do that he replied that it was someone who gave away a lot of his own money to charity and if that is what he became it would mean that he was very wealthy. Unfortunately, he never became one, but Seymour Schulich did.

The book has many autobiographical anecdotes starting when he was a kid, through his summer job on to his massive wealth creation investments and businesses. He also throws in stories of people who overcame adversity to achieve uncommon success such as Katherine Graham's taking over the family business which she knew little about at age 46 after her husband's suicide. Under her tutelage the Washington Post grew to one of the most prestigious newspapers in the World. She gave much credit to here skilled managers, perseverance and a positive attitude. Schulich writes about Intel's Andrew Grove's management discipline - his ability to decide what is worth your time and effort, and what isn't, and then cut out the latter.

One of the many reinforced ideas I got was saying "no." We know this, we read about it, but we need to be reminded that we need to say no much more than we say yes. And every no is a rejection to someone, so we must be diplomatic and firm, and comfortable with the decision.

Howard Schultz approached 242 people for money over a four year period trying to make his business idea into reality. 217 of them turned him down. Today there are over 10,000 Starbucks. Persistence is needed in anything you want to accomplish.

Schulich gives five questions to ask when screening a potential deal or investment. Four of them coincide with the questions I tell my clients to ask. How much can I make? How much can I lose? How do I get my money back? Who says this deal is any good? The fifth one "Who else is in the deal?" is not much of a concern of mine, since many so called heavy hitters invest on reputation, gut and instinct without much due diligence, witness the Bernard Madoff scam. Now, if you could get a piece of a Warren Buffet deal...

Having skin in the game means having some pride of ownership in the project. When there is a personal risk or benefit, there is greater care. One of the author's axioms is that "business is a means to an end not an end in itself." Another one is "always ask the question "if this decision in wrong, is it going to be painful or fatal?" Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Wachovia, AIG, etc., etc., etc., should have asked this question before they bet the farm on subprime mortgage derivatives.

The book is chock full of great cartoons by Ted Goff. My favorite one shows someone answering the one asking the caller to hold on for ten minutes while they are transferred to the Lost Sale Department.

A no Brainer - read it
By Jim Estill
I loved the book. Seymour Schulich is an accomplished entrepreneur billionaire which is why people might listen to him.

His advice is just old fashioned common sense (which is not that common)

The book consists of 48 very short chapters. (Don't be daunted -- this is a very simple and fast read.) It is written largely as an older man's mentoring for someone who is new and going into business. As I read the various rules, I couldn't help but smile and nod in agreement with almost everything he had to say in almost every area.

The book is not only business lessons but covers lessons on finance and life. He even gets into relationships.

I found the book to be a page turner (which might seem ironic for a business book, but perhaps I am different). It contained many gems and philosophies.

It is definitely worth the read!

Sodium Bicarbonate: Nature's Unique First Aid Remedy, by Mark Sircus

What if there were a natural health-promoting substance that was inexpensive, available at any grocery store in the country, and probably sitting in your cupboard right now? There is. It is called sodium bicarbonate, although you may know it as baking soda. For years, sodium bicarbonate has been used on a daily basis as part of a number of hospital treatments, but most people remain unaware of its full therapeutic potential. In his new book, Dr. Mark Sircus shows how this common compound may be used in the alleviation, or possibly even prevention, of many forms of illness.

Sodium Bicarbonate begins with a basic overview of the everyday item known as baking soda, chronicling its long history of use as an effective home remedy. It then explains the role sodium bicarbonate plays in achieving optimal pH balance, which is revealed as an important factor in maintaining good health. The book goes on to detail how sodium bicarbonate and its effect on pH may benefit sufferers of a number of conditions, including kidney disease, fungal infection, influenza, hypertension, and even cancer. Finally, it lists the various ways in which sodium bicarbonate may be taken, suggesting the easiest and most effective method for your situation.

By providing a modern approach to this time-honored remedy, Sodium Bicarbonate illustrates the need to see baking soda in a whole new light. While it was once considered simply an ingredient in baked goods and toothpaste, sodium bicarbonate contains powerful properties that may help you balance your system, regain your wellbeing, and avoid future health problems.

This is the first medical review of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in the history of medicine, and it will change the way you think about baking soda, change the way we practice medicine, and change the way we take care of our children. Our lives are made easier by sodium bicarbonate, for there are hundreds of uses for it. It helps us clean up messes around the house, as well as messes inside our bodies.

When Hippocrates said in 400 BC, “Let food be thy medicine,” he did not dream that individual vitamins, minerals, and even enzymes could be taken in concentrated form. Almost twenty-five hundred years later, the best emergency room and intensive care doctors use concentrated nutritional medicine to save lives every day, including baking soda. Sodium bicarbonate is a world-class emergency room and intensive care medicine used every day to save lives.

Until now, you could only find books about the household use of baking soda; its use as a medicine has been shrouded in mystery. No longer! Sodium bicarbonate, known chemically as NaHCO3, is a form of salt that has many names, including baking soda, bread soda, and bicarbonate of soda. It is found in nature in a crystalline form, which may be processed into a fine powder. It has long been used for a variety of medicinal purposes, but is not a pharmaceutical drug.

Sodium bicarbonate is the time-honored method to “speed up” the return of the body’s bicarbonate levels to normal. Bicarbonate is the ion normally responsible for alkalinity, or the capacity of water to neutralize acids or resist changes in pH. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes acid and protects digestive enzymes. Sodium bicarbonate happens to be one of our most useful medicines treating as it does basic human physiology.

Sodium bicarbonate is only classified as a medicine if injected or administered intravenously. Otherwise, it is a legal food item that anyone can buy in most supermarkets and pharmacies around the world. It is totally safe because not only does the body need it, but the body also produces it in the stomach, pancreas, and kidneys.

Sodium bicarbonate is nutritional, but is one of the most concentrated effective medicines in the world. Its ranges of effects are profound. It has blood vessel dilating action (vasodilator), and it also increases blood fluidity, facilitates blood flow delivery, and assists oxygen dissociation from hemoglobin―thus, more oxygen flows to the capillaries and cells. Through the “Bohr Effect,” more oxygen is released from hemoglobin.

Bicarbonate also has strong anti-inflammatory action and helps with detoxification and neutralization of toxic substances of all kinds, offering strong and almost instantaneous shifts in pH. Pharmaceutical companies can charge all they want―and they do―for their dangerous ineffective medicines. But even in the wildest dreams of a pharmaceutical executive do visions come for a drug they might fabricate that would match the fantastic medicinal properties of simple, inexpensive baking soda.

The pH of the blood is the most important factor to determine the state of the microorganisms in the blood.

Sodium bicarbonate acts as a powerful, natural, and safe antifungal agent, which when combined with iodine, covers the entire spectrum of microbial organisms. The efficacy of sodium bicarbonate against certain bacteria and fungi has been documented, but its role as a disinfectant against viruses is not generally known. Sodium bicarbonate at concentrations of 5 percent and above was found to be effective, with 99.99 percent reduction of viral titers on food contact surfaces within a contact time of one minute.

Safe Medicine for Nuclear Contamination

There is an extraordinary reason why everyone needs to understand and use baking soda. The radiation from Fukushima, Japan, is relentless and getting worse, spreading far and wide on our beautiful planet. One of the most potent uses of sodium bicarbonate is as an antidote for radiation exposure.

It is a crying shame what we have done to ourselves and our children by allowing nuclear power, nuclear weapons, and depleted uranium armaments. As we shall see in this book, baking soda is one of the best antidotes for radiation poisoning. One can easily and cheaply take it orally or pile it into one’s baths, and these offer a good measure of protection. It’s the same reason why sodium bicarbonate is an excellent treatment for cancer. Research concludes that sodium bicarbonate increases tumor pH and inhibits spontaneous metastases.

Radiation exposure and increased incidences of cancer are tied mathematically to each other, so whatever is good for treating cancer is effective for treating radiation exposure. My writings and work with sodium bicarbonate began when I found out that bicarbonate was used by the Army for uranium exposure to protect the kidneys, and after learning about Dr. Tullio Simoncini and his work with sodium bicarbonate, cancer, and its use as a fungicide to irradiate Candida infections.

The title of my original writings on bicarbonate was Rich Man’s Poor Man’s Cancer Treatment and bicarbonate is just that, without doubt. This book, however, is not saying that sodium bicarbonate is the cure to cancer―but it is saying that almost every cancer patient should be taking it, substantially increasing one’s chance of becoming a cancer survivor. This is more than important in a world where one out of every two people will get cancer, and the numbers seem destined to only get worse.

Nutritional Medicine

Sodium bicarbonate is not a pharmaceutical drug; it is a nutrient the body needs for survival every day. Thousands of studies have uncovered a clear and distinct relationship between vital nutrients and cancer. One influential study (Ramesha et al. 1990) provides a powerful example. A powerful carcinogen known as DMBA was given to a group of female rats. Then the rats were given none, one of four, two of four, three of four, or all of four nutrients: the minerals selenium and magnesium, and vitamins C and A.

When no nutrients were administered, all of the rats developed breast cancer. When one of the nutrients was given, 46.4 to 57.1 percent of the rats developed tumors, depending on the nutrient. When two of the nutrients were given in combination, the tumor incidence decreased to 29.9 to 34.6 percent, depending on which nutrients were used in combination. Administration of nutrients in groups of threes resulted in further reduction of tumor incidences, coming down to somewhere between 16 to 23.1 percent. And when all four nutrients were given together, tumor incidence dropped to 12 percent. Human DNA is 99 percent identical to that of rats.

Natural Cancer Medicine

This book is about the application of the least expensive, safest, and perhaps most effective cancer medicine there is, and that is the primary reason so many people have been interested in my writings and research on sodium bicarbonate.

Simple baking soda is a prime component of my Natural Allopathic Medicine protocol for cancer (which includes the nutrients in the above study), holding down the number two spot coming right after magnesium. My approach to cancer, as well as all other diseases, is a protocol approach, which includes other powerful non-toxic substances like glutathione, iodine, selenium, vitamin C, light and heat, as well as other substances that are prioritized to yield a powerful yet all natural treatment for cancer.

Most of us were amazed to find out that there is an oncologist in Rome, Dr. Tullio Simoncini, destroying cancer tumors with sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is safe, extremely inexpensive, and effective when it comes to cancer tissues. It is irresistible cyanide to cancer cells. It hits the cancer cells with a shock wave of alkalinity, which allows much more oxygen into the cancer cells than they can tolerate. Cancer cells cannot survive in the presence of high levels of oxygen. Sodium bicarbonate is a killer of tumors, safer and more effective than anything else. That does not mean that every single patient who uses bicarbonate is going to be saved, but they certainly will be helped.

Treatment takes from only a few weeks to several months. Even if a person does not survive their cancer, the bicarbonate will bring comfort and reduction of pain. Successful follow up treatments are then highly recommended. Over the long term, health habit changes are paramount. Certain substances, like magnesium, bicarbonate, iodine, and selenium, are mineral medicines we all should be taking for life. All of our bodies are under stresses never before faced across a broad front of radiation exposures (medical testing), chemical and heavy metal exposure, and the tremendous explosion of microwave transmission. We need these minerals just like plants do.

It All Started Here

Dr. Tullio Simoncini tells us of his early experience with bicarbonate. “One of the first patients I treated was an 11-year-old child, a case which immediately indicated that I was on the right track. The child arrived in a coma at the paediatric haematology ward around 11:30 in the morning, with a clinical history of leukemia. Because of the child’s disease he had been taken from a small town in Sicily to Rome, through the universities of Palermo and Naples, where he underwent several chemotherapy sessions. His desperate mother told me that she had been unable to speak with the child for 15 days; that is, since the child had been on his journey through the various hospitals. She said she would have given the world to hear her son’s voice once again before he died.”

“As I was of the opinion that the child was comatose both because of the proliferation of fungal colonies in the brain and because of the toxicity of the therapies that had been performed on him, I concluded that if I could destroy the colonies with sodium bicarbonate salts and at the same time nourish and detoxify the brain with glucose administered intravenously, I could hope for a regression of the symptoms. And so it was. After a continuous intravenous infusion of bicarbonate and glucose solutions, at around 7 pm, when I returned to the university, I found the child speaking with his mother, who was in tears,” said Dr. Simoncini.

There is an amazing amount of materials on sodium bicarbonate and baking soda on the Internet and I am responsible for much of it over the years. It is hard not to be moved by such testimonials, but many discount such information as unscientific―yet, there is nothing unscientific about sodium bicarbonate because we are talking basic chemistry.

In this book, most of the testimonials are personal accounts, but throughout the book I share clinical experience of professionals as well as the conclusions of studies and reports. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of my work. My books Treatment Essentials (simple instructions on the protocol), and my soon-to-be-released Surviving Cancer Compendium with Natural Allopathic Medicine (2,500 pages), offer patients and their doctors information new to the world of oncology.

Natural Chemotherapy

Sodium bicarbonate cancer treatment focuses on delivering natural chemotherapy in a way that effectively kills cancer cells while dramatically reducing the brutal side effects and costs experienced with standard chemotherapy treatments. Everyone should know about this and it is a betrayal of our humanity that most people still do not know. Losing the benefits and comfort that sodium bicarbonate (and magnesium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate and even calcium bicarbonate can bring).

One pound of sodium bicarbonate costs only a few dollars at the supermarket. If you live in the United States, you can get fifty pounds for fifty dollars of high grade medicine that you can drink or put in your bathtub for the quickest, safest, and certainly least expensive anticancer treatment available anywhere for any price.

For less than a dinner at a restaurant, one has a nothing-to-lose-everything-to-gain cancer treatment. Sodium bicarbonate is an effective, safe, and rapid acting anti-tumor agent. It is a necessary cancer medicine and oncologists have secretly been using it for decades to protect their patients from the deadly chemo chemicals they use.

Oncologist’s Secret Weapon

Sodium bicarbonate is used prior to, during, and after application of chemotherapy. Studies have already shown how manipulation of tumor pH with sodium bicarbonate enhances chemotherapy, pointing to the appropriateness of using bicarbonate as a principle medicinal substance with the potential of curing people of their cancers.

Since the very beginning, sodium bicarbonate has been used with the premier chemotherapy agent made from mustard gas. Mechlorethamine, also known as chlormethine, mustine, nitrogen mustard, and HN2 and sold under the brand name Mustargen, was the prototype anticancer chemotherapeutic drug. Use of mechlorethamine gave birth to the field of anticancer chemotherapy. Without baking soda, orthodox oncology would never have been able to establish itself, for all its patients would probably have died too quickly.

You will also be given lots of fluids (as a drip) and a drug called mesna with your cyclophosphamide to help prevent bladder irritation. Sodium bicarbonate will be given to you―usually as a drip―before and during your methotrexate treatment, to help protect your kidneys.

These chemo drugs are an analogue of mustard gas and were derived from chemical warfare research. Instructions for their use include: Dilute well with rapidly running IVF flush solution. After infusion is complete, give brisk bolus approx. 200 cc IVF to flush veins. The basic substances used in IVF flushes are sodium thiosulfate and sodium bicarbonate. Without the bicarbonate and thiosulfate buffers, patients would quickly succumb to the chemo poisons. It’s a picture right out of hell, using mustard gas instead of something vastly safer.

Everyone who chooses highly toxic and dangerous chemotherapy should be advised that science indicates that it might be the sodium bicarbonate that’s doing the helping and not the poisons. Wouldn’t it be sickening to think that patients had to take a pile of poison just to get their simple, inexpensive and safe bicarbonate treatments? The story and history of chemotherapy would have been a lot worse if sodium bicarbonate was not already in wide use for cancer patients taking chemotherapy.

Awesome Book, Never a Disappointment!
By S.W. Warner
I have read every one of Dr. Sircus' books, including the e-books and am happy to actually have a copy I can hold in my hand and read about sodium bicarb. Sadly, there is information in this book that most physicians are ignorant of. This book should be REQUIRED reading for all physicians and their assistants, as well as Nurse Practitioners. It is information that has saved many lives. I've always believed that when oncologists hang a chemo drip and put sodium bicarb beside it (to keep the chemo from killing the patient and/or wiping out their kidneys), that the real credit for any improvement or cure that takes place belongs to the soda bicarb, not to the chemo drug. But let's face it, sodium bicarb is cheap and chemo drugs are making the cancer establishment wonderfully wealthy. Just one round of a chemo drug can cost a patient $30,000. or more, but the IV sodium bicarb is only a few bucks. While more and more physicians are reaching the conclusion that cancer is caused by a fungus, it makes sense to use the best anti-fungal in the world on it - sodium bicarb. But they are fighting an uphill battle because conventional medicine can't make big bucks on a natural ingredient like sodium bicarb!

As the good doctor himself has pointed out
By DaySleeper
As the good doctor himself has pointed out, magnesium bicarbonate may well be better than sodium bicarbonate for some applications, but the book is quite informative & worthwhile. I'm using sodium bicarbonate daily externally on my feet & underarms to prevent fungus & odor.

First aid and so much more!
By Carolyn C
This book opened my eyes to an easy way to alkalize my body. I had known my body was acidic and I used baking soda as a toothpaste, but really did not understand exactly how to use it. The dosage protocol and cautions on pages 135-6 are invaluable. Neither had I known how extensively it is used in hospital emergency rooms or how many chronic diseases respond to it.

Amazon.com Review
In Letters to a Young Chef, Daniel Boulud, cookbook author, chef, and owner of Daniel, Café Boulud, and DB Bistro Moderne in New York City, briefly covers what he believes are the most important building blocks to becoming a great chef. Boulud grew up on his family's farm in a tiny town near Lyons, France. Like most of today's great European chefs, he took his first kitchen job at the tender age of 14. But his lengthy, successful career in New York City has made him very aware that the path he took to get where he is is very different from the one young American chefs take today. His advice is wise, and could apply to other careers as well: find a mentor, use your connections, work hard, learn how something is done by a successful chef before you try out your own creativity, travel, explore, be loyal to your employer, develop your sense of taste, and learn all aspects of the restaurant business before attempting to go out on your own. Boulud's excellent advice comes from years of experience, and some of the most enjoyable parts of this little book are his anecdotes about the time he spent learning and paying his dues in legendary kitchens, and about the fascinating culinary icons he mixes with today. A quick read by a most fascinating culinary celebrity, you'll wish he shared even more, and that next time he puts pen to paper, it will be for a full-length memoir. --Leora Y. Bloom

From Publishers Weekly
You can say one thing for Boulud, owner of top-flight New York restaurants Daniel, Caf‚ Boulud and DB Bistro Moderne: he's not one for coddling. In this rather skimpy collection of advice to recent culinary school grads, he shoots straight from the hip. Working as a chef in someone else's restaurant wouldn't be his choice, he explains, or the choice of anyone with true passion, he implies. "Still, it is a life." Instead, these brief chapters on topics like finding a mentor and controlling one's ego and ambition ("I have a healthy dose of both," he confesses) are aimed at a very specific audience: those who want to open their own restaurants, and they'd better be young (over 30 is over-the-hill) and hungry-and not just for a perfect coq au vin. The book is long on generalities, but rather short on specifics. One exception is the chapter on wine and dessert, which explains that 10% to 15% of an average check is generated by the latter, and one-third by the former. Boulud can also be maddeningly contradictory, as when he lauds all things seasonal, then broadens the definition to include chanterelles from Oregon, because they reach New York in two days. A final chapter listing the 10 commandments of a chef (including keep knives sharp and learn the world of food) restates much of the previous information in pithier form. This book is the Monsieur Hyde to the Dr. Jekyll version of culinary training presented in Jacques Pepin's The Apprentice. Recipes not seen by PW.

Good advice from one of America’s leading culinary authorities!
By MamaT
I enjoyed Daniel Boulud's story of his journey and his advice to people who want to become a chef.

Anybody can cook but it takes a dedicated person to become a professional chef. It takes years to develop the knowledge and skills. You start at the bottom and work your way up through the ranks. You have to have a thick skin to survive in the demanding, pressure cooker, chaotic environment of a busy kitchen. Anyone considering a culinary career should read this book.

Professional cooking is like a sport. It takes stamina and endurance. Those who start in grade school develop fundamentals at an earlier age than those who start in Jr High or High School. Lorenzo Cain of the Kansas City Royals did not start playing baseball until he was a sophomore in high school - a time when most kids decide baseball isn't for them. And in 2015 he helped the Royals win the World Series. Exception rather than the rule. So for those 'older' chefs who are behind the curve - bring your life experiences, work hard and become the exception!

This is my first review, but I feel confident about it. I'm (God, I hope) a better cook than I am a critic!
By Amazon Customer
Chef Boulud is an idol of mine and I met him a couple of months ago in DC. He was such a nice, humble, gentleman (it didn't hurt that he bought my fiancé and myself a night-cap of cognac). It's nice to see someone so successful not lose his basic values. Letters to a young chef is essentially a diary of how hard the food industry is, written by someone who genuinely knows about the hardship of the food industry. The first few chapters may be a little intimidating, but anyone with pure moral values, passion, and a pinch of talent/creativity will love it.

Two forms of local government are prevalent in American cities. The style of leadership found in mayor-council cities draws attention to the mayor and frequently involves power struggles as mayors attempt to assert control over city councils and city staff. However, the leadership of the mayor in council-manager cities can be less visible and easily overlooked. The Facilitative Leader in City Hall: Reexamining the Scope and Contributions boldly suggests a collaborative model for leadership that identifies what is unique in the council-manager setting. Mayors acting as facilitative leaders can successfully guide their cities drawing on the contributions of the council and the manager rather than attempting to drive them.

Scholar James H. Svara builds on his work in the 1994 book Facilitative Leadership in Local Government, and provides a more critical analysis of the mayor’s office in a wider variety of cities. This book examines the model of facilitative leadership and the importance of vision in explaining the nature of mayoral leadership and its effect on the performance of city government. It analyzes responses from a 2001 national survey of city council members and examines the findings of fourteen case studies of mayors who have served in recent years. The book features ten case studies from council-manager cities, three from mayor-council cities, and one from Denmark that highlights the importance of culture as well as formal structure in understanding leadership style.

This book reexamines facilitative leadership across forms of government and addresses two questions: can mayors without separate formal powers be effective leaders? And alternatively, can mayors with formal powers provide more effective leadership by using facilitative approaches? The unexpected answer to both questions is "yes." As cities face the challenge of adapting to new approaches to governance, all mayors need to lead with facilitation and vision.

Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo and the Making of the Animal Kingdom, by Sean B. Carroll

“A beautiful and very important book.”―Lewis Wolpert, American Scientist

For over a century, opening the black box of embryonic development was the holy grail of biology. Evo Devo―Evolutionary Developmental Biology―is the new science that has finally cracked open the box. Within the pages of his rich and riveting book, Sean B. Carroll explains how we are discovering that complex life is ironically much simpler than anyone ever expected.

Amazon.com Review
"Every animal form is the product of two processes--development from an egg and evolution from its ancestors," writes Sean B. Carroll in his introduction to Endless Forms Most Beautiful. The new science of "evo devo"--or evolutionary developmental biology--examines the relationships between those two processes, embryonic development and evolutionary changes, despite their radically different time scales. Carroll first offers a recap of how genes express themselves in a growing embryo, then peers into the life histories of real-life examples to explain how those genes have changed (or not changed) over millions of years of evolution. Paraphrasing Thomas Huxley, he asks us to consider evolution and development as two sides of the same coin. We may marvel at the process of an egg becoming an adult, but we accept it as an everyday fact. It is merely then a lack of imagination to fail to grasp how changes in this process that assimilated over long periods of time, far longer than the span of human experience, shape life's diversity." The book's second half is where Carroll really gets at the meat of evo devo, explaining how regulatory genes control such mysteries as individual and population changes in butterfly's spots, jaguar fur, and hominid skulls. Evo devo is one of the hottest areas of study in 21st-century biology, and Carroll's outline of the field is a great place to start understanding it. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
Cobb County textbook stickers aside, evolutionary natural selection offers a pretty straightforward explanation for the forward march of species through history; a mutation that better equips a given organism to survive is passed along to its heirs, becoming more common as successive generations flourish. The actual process by which mutations happen, however, was far more mysterious until scientists turned to the study of evolutionary development (known by the somewhat unfortunate moniker "Evo Devo"). One such scientist is Carroll, a genetics professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, who guides us along the broad contours of development ("the process through which a single-celled egg gives rise to a complex, multibillion-celled animal") and the ways in which its study sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of evolution. He explains in concrete terms how small changes in a species's genetic code of a given species can lead to dramatic differences in physiology is the "missing piece" of evolutionary theory, Carroll argues. The book is as much a salvo in the continuing battles between creationists and evolutionists as it is a popularization of science, and Carroll combines clear writing with the deep knowledge gained from a lifetime of genetics research, first laying out the principles of evolutionary development and then showing us how they can explain both the progression of species in the fossil record and outliers like a six-fingered baseball pitcher. It would be hard to imagine two more different timescales in the lives of organisms than development--the transformation of an embryo to an adult within a single generation--and evolution--the modification and transformation of organisms between generations that reach back 600 million years. Yet for the past two centuries, natural philosophers, morphologists and biologists have asked whether there is a fundamental relationship between development (ontogeny) and evolution (phylogeny). There is, and it finds expression in the thriving discipline of evolutionary developmental biology (evo devo, as it has been called since the early 1990s). Endless Forms Most Beautiful examines one of the most exciting aspects of evo devo--the incorporation of molecular biology that followed the discovery of classes of conserved regulatory (developmental, or "switching") genes: the homeobox, or Hox, genes. Carroll, who is a professor of genetics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, writes in a lively style, peppering the book with endlessly fascinating examples that are beautifully illustrated by color and black-and-white drawings and photographs. To appreciate where this latest book devoted to evo devo is situated in the long history of the discipline, we need to go back almost 200 years. The study of embryonic stages across the animal kingdom--comparative embryology--flourished from 1830 on. Consequently, when On the Origin of Species appeared in 1859, Charles Darwin knew that the embryos of all invertebrates (worms, sea urchins, lobsters) and vertebrates (fish, serpents, birds, mammals) share embryonic stages so similar (which is to say, so conserved throughout evolution) that the same names can be given to equivalent stages in different organisms. Darwin also knew that early embryonic development is based on similar layers of cells and similar patterns of cell movement that generate the forms of embryos and of their organ systems. He embraced this community of embryonic development. Indeed, it could be argued that evo devo (then known as evolutionary embryology) was born when Darwin concluded that the study of embryos would provide the best evidence for evolution. Darwin's perception was given a theoretical basis and evo devo its first theory when Ernst Haeckel proposed that because ontogeny (development) recapitulates phylogeny (evolutionary history), evolution could be studied in embryos. Technological advances in histological sectioning and staining made simultaneously in the 1860s and 1870s enabled biologists to compare the embryos of different organisms. Though false in its strictest form, Haeckel's theory lured most morphologists into abandoning the study of adult organisms in favor of embryos--literally to seek evolution in embryos. History does repeat itself; 100 years later a theory of how the body plan of a fruit fly is established, coupled with technological advances, ushered in the molecular phase of evo devo evaluated by Carroll. As Carroll discusses in his book (the title of which comes from the last lines of The Origin of Species), the discovery of Mendelian genetics in 1900, and soon after of the gene as the unit of heredity, thrust a wedge between development and evolution. Genes were now what mattered in evolution; embryos were merely the vehicles that carried genes from one generation to the next. Embryology was divorced from evolution, devo from evo. Even the discovery in the 1950s of the nature and role of DNA did not bring them back together. In the late 1970s, however, all began to change as several revolutions in theory and technology produced a mind shift as dramatic as the one that followed Darwin's The Origin of Species. New methods for generating phylogenetic relationships brought comparative embryology back to the forefront; now we can assess the direction of evolutionary changes in development. When we find a species of frog that has lost the tadpole stage from its life cycle--a remarkable evolutionary change in form and function--we can determine whether that loss was an early or late event in the evolution of frogs. Stephen Jay Gould's seminal book Ontogeny and Phylogeny (1977) rekindled interest in 19th-century evolutionary embryology and resurrected an old idea--heterochrony, change in the timing of development in a descendant relative to an ancestor--in a form that could be tested. Important as these developments were, they were carried out against the then current wisdom that organisms differ because they possess unique genes not found in other organisms--lobster genes for lobsters, human genes for humans, and so forth. The discovery of homeobox genes turned this approach upside down and inside out. The body plans of lobsters and humans, flies and fish, barnacles and mice, are initiated using the same families of genes that are conserved across the animal kingdom. The consequences of this discovery are the stuff of the first half of Endless Forms Most Beautiful, in which Carroll presents homeobox genes as the switches that contain the fundamental information required to make a fly's eye or a human hand. The second half of the book explores what Carroll calls "the making of animal diversity," beginning with animal life as exemplified in the justly famous 500-million-year-old fossils of the Burgess Shale formation in British Columbia. Carroll is concerned with evolutionary tinkering with genetic switches and the production of patterns in nature--spots on butterfly wings, stripes on zebras. He devotes less attention to the downstream gene cascades and gene networks that allow similar signaling genes to initiate, for example, the wing of a bird or a human arm. Nor are the cells and cellular processes from which the endless forms are constructed given prominence. Consequently, statements such as "the anatomy of animal bodies is really encoded and built ... by constellations of switches distributed all over the genome" could be taken to mean that switching genes contain all the information required to generate form. Were that true there would be no need for evo devo; indeed, there would be no development. It would all be geno evo. But, as Carroll demonstrates, "the evolution of form occurs through changes in development," which is precisely why evo devo is so central to understanding how animals have been and are being evolved.

My background is a little different from some other readers - bought this while reading "Developmental Biology" by Scott F. Gilbert. While that book is excellent, it did commit a bit of a cardinal sin in textbooks - throwing too many things in at once, sometimes not relating them. But that issue was primarily in regard to the early developmental genes. Thus I looked at "Endless forms most beautiful" to get a 10,000ft view of that subject. Looking at the reviews I thought this pop-science book would be good for that. I was disappointed - this is NOT a detailed review of those genes, but that's not a reflection on the book, merely on what I expected from it based on the reviews. The book was still a very good read and did give me a few conceptual nuggets that I didn't get from the textbook and that did help me "grok" the material better. For those without any prior background who are interested in starting to learn about evo devo this is easy to read (one day) and understand.
I would have given it 5 stars if not for some annoying writing style. The attempts to relate parts of the book to some pop-song lyrics or some personal stories felt very distracting and gratuitous. Don't get me wrong, that kind of writing can be done very effectively, I just don't think Carroll pulled it off. Also, I understand now why this book is a darling of some anti-religious types. The last part of it seems to be fighting against creationism in its various forms or ignorance of evolution. However, for most people who would read this book, especially all the way to the end it's a totally unnecessary point. I ended up skip-reading that last portion, not wanting to skip it entirely in case something of substance would be found there while feeling like I was wasting my time.

Popular Science at One of Its Finest Hours from a noted Developmental Biologist
By Life, the Universe and Everything
The Modern Synthesis in evolutionary biology has since its conception in the 1930s through the 1950s expanded to include ever-growing fields from all corner of academia, not just biology. The conceptual developments that folded the Modern Synthesis lead to revolutions in psychology, medicine, sociology, econimcs, engineering, langauge and others by bringing aboard evoltuonary thought.

In this book by one of the leading experts in the field of evolutionary developomental biology or evo-devo readers are guided through the basics in the first part of the book, while in the second the concepts explained in the first part are used to shed light on many examples of changes in gene expression in the animal kingdom.

The book takes a grand view of animal design and how it got that way, the author sets out to answer four fundamental questions (pp. 35):

1. What are some of the major "rules" for generating animal form?
2. How is the species-specific information for building a pariticular animal decoded?
3. How does diversity evolve?
4. What explains large-scale trends in evolution, such as the change in number and function of repeated parts?

The first part explains the tool kit of an (evolutionary) developmental biologist and these phenomenon influence gene expression, regulation of genes, and the developmental processes. The second part of the book begins with a grand view of animal design, and the broad lineages of animals-the proteurostomes and deuterostomes-and how hox genes have been monumental for the origin of diversity for these groups. The rest is small-scale changes of carefully selected examples in the animal kingdom, including examples from our own species.
The last chapter is important because it points out three crucial things: (1) a cry for a "more" Modern Synthesis and the importance of developmental in evolutionary history, (2) the hinderance of teaching evolutionary theory in many Western countries, including (4) the USA where Creationism and Intelligent Design lobbied by fundamentalist Christians stand in the way of a decent education in biology (including evolutionary theory).

Read the book, and be amazed by the power of evolutionary thinking in developomental biology, and enjoy the neat photos in the two color-plate sections and the lavish illustrations throughout the book.

For the record this is not the only book of Sean Carroll he has written two other great popular science books as well, The Making of the Fittest and Remarkable Creatures (in addition to a few others, and a textbook) worth reading. Those who wants to know more about the author go and look at his website. On Youtube several videos there features him, there's even a one-hour presentation of this book (with the same name as the book).

Turns out it IS blueprints
By Stephen E. Witham
The story and implications of the work that led to evo-devo are amazing, but other reviewers here cover that. I want to summarize the algorithm I pieced together from Carroll's not-entirely-step-by-step discussion.

It turns out, counter to what biologists thought for most of the 20th Century, that our genomes really are a lot like blueprints. We thought that there's no easy mapping from a gene to a body part or detail at some spot on the body. But there often is. We thought that the genes specify the process of embryogenesis, not a picture of the final product, and that's true, but the process has a lot to do with identifying locations and things to go in locations. The "toolkit" that Carroll talks about is a system common to all multicelled animals for laying out maps and allocating places on those maps for parts, then (recursively) laying out maps interior to the parts and allocating space for subparts, and so on. As if, at each stage, you had bosses and sub-bosses reading from blueprints and sub-blueprints to surveyors and builders.

This is done with chemical signal gradients and the switches that turn genes on and off based on combinations of signals and cell states. All of this happens as the ground on which the work is happening is expanding exponentially, so that although the signals operate over similar ranges, if a signal is put out earlier in the growth process it influences what finally becomes a larger part. Carroll emphasizes that this means parts' sizes can be varied by varying when their formation triggers. Another effect is when, over the course of evolution, a controlling gene becomes duplicated, the the original and variant genes evolve to trigger at different locations, and then the two duplicate parts can specialize differently while still sharing most of their code.

There is an alternation between the activation of signals for body parts-- like head, thorax, tail, then later eye, leg, heart-- and setting up gradients that identify locations in a space, like toward the torso vs. out toward the extremities. At first you identify north, south, east and west, and then New York, DC, Seattle, LA, Miami, Chicago identify themselves, then the grids around the cities, then named neighborhoods within those grids, and so on. If you think of an individual final cell, it (and the ancestor cells it split form) learns step by step the details that customize it: first it's in the Northeast, then it's a New Yorker, then slightly to the southeast of Manhattan, then in Brooklyn... the center... Park Slope... top of the hill... until it's the assistant to the owner of a flower shop across from the park.

Something I thought was missing: how do reaction-diffusion processes and/or mutual-inhibition fit into this process? They seem necessary for cells (and groups of cells) to make definite decisions about what to be, where a sharp edge is, for there to be a single center for a part, and so forth. It seems to be either left out because the relation to evo-devo isn't well-studied, or touched on in an earlier section of the book but not fit into the general summary.

Something that seemed important that I want to pay attention to on my second reading: why are strings of HOX genes in the same order along the DNA that the corresponding parts are along the body? It was emphasized in the story of their discovery but I forget how they ended up that way evolutionarily, and how it figures into the way they play out in development.

The Thief and the Dogs, by Naguib Mahfouz

Naguib Mahfouz's haunting novella of post-revolutionary Egypt combines a vivid pychological portrait of an anguished man with the suspense and rapid pace of a detective story. After four years in prison, the skilled young thief Said Mahran emerges bent on revenge. He finds a world that has changed in more ways than one. Egypt has undergone a revolution and, on a more personal level, his beloved wife and his trusted henchman, who conspired to betray him to the police, are now married to each other and are keeping his six-year-old daughter from him. But in the most bitter betrayal, his mentor, Rauf Ilwan, once a firebrand revolutionary who convinced Said that stealing from the rich in a unjust society is an act of justice, is now himself a rich man, a respected newspaper editor who wants nothing to do with the disgraced Said. As Said's wild attempts to achieve his idea of justice badly misfire, he becomes a hunted man so driven by hatred that he can only recognize too late his last chance at redemption.

From Publishers Weekly
Out of prison for less than a day, thief Said Mahran quickly resumes his old ways, and worse. Angered by his young daughter's refusal to even shake hands with the parent she has not seen in four years, and by the chilly reception from Rauf Ilwan, a former colleague in crime whom he suspects of having betrayed him to the police, Mahran goes berserk and seeks revenge with a gun. But this onetime Robin Hood (an ardent nationalist, he stole only from "people who deserved to be robbed") accidentally murders two innocents instead of his intended victims, the new husband of his ex-wife and Ilwan. Pursued by the press and the police, he finds refuge with a prostitute he knows; her flat has a view of a cemetery. The Nobel laureate writes here with remarkable clarity and eloquence. His tale of the haunted, hunted Mahran feverish and suspenseful, introspective and subtle. In just 176 pages, he offers a complex psychological portrait of a man hell-bent on ruining himself. This 1961 novel was previously published in the U.S. in a limited edition.

Poetic and an Art of Perspective
By Dawn Stillman
The text seems almost lyrical and the plot line is a true art form in character perspective. The story is engaging and filled with action, yet philosophical and a reflection of what it is to be human.

An intimate perspective
By Luan Gaines
This novel is the perfect distillation of Mafouz' brilliance as a writer. A slice-of-life in Midaq Alley, the characters are carefully wrought and distinct, complete with idiosyncrasies. From Uum Hamida, who brokers a marriage for the well-heeled Mrs. Saniya Afify, to Zaitas the cripple-maker, each has a role in the tapestry of life as lived in the alley.
Like the Cairo Trilogy, Mafouz creates his own rhythm and style while adapting the novel format, one not commonly found in Arabic literature when he began writing novels. His plot revolves around the denizens of Midaq Alley and their every day yearnings for happiness, love and prosperity. Whether you are familiar with this author, or this is your first Mafouz novel, it is an excellent example of the unique talent that allows the reader an intimate view of the characters common to this man's vast insight into humanity.
