Productivity Sound-Bites

Summary: There are a lot of very good strategies and recommendations which make this book worth reading, but the brevity and lack of in-depth treatment are frustrating, resulting in a book that is less than what it could be.

This is a brief book with a number of contributors. Since there is no one answer for all people out there, hearing from a number of people their strategies for getting things accomplished is a nice change, compared to numerous single-author single-plan productivity books that are out there. However, there is some consistency of perspective, and some themes, such as reducing distractions, repeat across many contributors. You probably already know much of what is in here, but seeing the ways in which you are not maximizing your productivity in black and white (and red) brings them to the foreground where you cannot ignore them.

From the description, I was expecting a longer book with more in-depth articles. There are some gems of observations and ideas here, but the contributions are unsatisfyingly brief. Most offer general strategies rather than specific helpful steps, many of which you already know (e.g. "Kill the background noise - Turn off your phone, email, .... ", the distinction between creative work and reactive work, etc.). It is not bad for what it is, but, as a fan of several of the contributors, I was hoping for so much more (ymmv), though I did find the book useful for honing my to-do lists. Most of them feel like brief excerpts from longer works. Just when an article gets going, I turn the page, and POOF !!, it is over.

However, you can read this book as a collection of useful suggestions & observations, some of which will hit the spot for you, and some which will not. Since it is composed of a number of brief stand-alone articles (or possibly blog excerpts), after getting the overview by reading the Forward, you can pick it up and start reading anywhere as interested. There are a lot of really great observations here (e.g. most productive work is done in the morning, multitasking makes things take longer to accomplish, the power of habit and repetition, importance of mindfulness & quiet reflection, etc.), but you have to figure out how to compose your own action plan for any idea you want to incorporate into your life -- it is not a step-by-step how-to book. And even though it is brief and general, there are really good observations here that will take time to absorb, so it is probably worth re-reading from time to time.

At the end of each of the four sections, there is a summary page of "Key Takeaways" along with a link to an appropriate page on their 99U website. The summaries don't really communicate the spark and usefulness of the articles they represent, but they do serve as useful reminders of what you have read. They are not in the table of contents, so you have to look for them.

Be aware that the small pages of this brief book have plenty of white space, and there are many pages with artistically giant words. So the book is not that long, thus it won't take a long time to read to harvest the suggestions that interest you.

Though the final printing may be different, my edition is hard to open and flip through, because it is a small book with tight binding and stiff pages. It is a constant battle to hold it open while reading, and my r.s.i. hands don't appreciate the continual muscle strain. "Manage Your Day-to-Day" by Jocelyn Glei, with contributions from various creative minds, is a good read for anyone wanting to improve their creativity and seeking more control over their lives. The book is around 240 pages and has around 22 chapters containing suggestions from folks in the creative thinking community. Some of the contributors have multiple inputs for the book and each chapter is around 8-10 pages.

Among some of the more helpful points for me covered include:

1. Drawing a line between the world's demands and your own ambitions.
2. We can accomplish much by working slowly and consistently over a long period of time.
3. Setting a daily routine by regularly and reliably doing your work in an habitual way.
4. We are not designed to operate at high speeds for long periods of time.
5. Blocking off time for focused creative effort.
6. Multitasking is overrated (I say "AMEN" to that!!!).
7. Suggestions for improving self-control.
8. Being involved in the moment enhances your creativity.
9. Many people want success in so much haste that they do not take time to be true to themselves (what good does it do to gain the whole world if you lose your soul in the process?).
10. Disengagement from a situation may provide a solution for your problem.

The book is a delightful read and may be completed in a few sittings. I will often refer to the book when needing either an inspiration or reminder of how to access creativity. Except for one instance of a four-letter word from one of the contributors, the book's content was clean.

A Keeper

This is one of those books that you want to keep around and refer to when you feel you're getting bogged down with "stuff". It's a collection of essays/articles on time management and life/work balance from various authors. Some are practical, others based on scientific studies but all are easy to read and full of ideas for working and living better. Many of the articles refer to creative work, particularly writing, but in my opinion, all work is creative and these tips will work for everyone.

Since I read these types of books/articles a lot, I was surprised to find so many new insights - and to actually feel energized. I'm guessing it's because instead of being "the one method you must use", there are very many viewpoints, tips and suggestions. Some of them seem contradictory - like work for hours vs work in short blocks - but as you read the essays, some will resonate with you as "the way" that will work for you.

A small quibble with this recording:

The other volumes in this series are readings of the standard English translation by Scott Moncrieff (this is also true of the equally excellent recordings by John Rowe, which, alas comprise only the first two volumes of _Remembrance of Things Past_).

Moncrieff died before he could complete this last volume (_Time Regained_), and the accompanying English translation is usually that of Frederick Blossom.

However, this recording is of a translation by "David Whiting".

While I personally would have preferred the use of Blossom's translation, I have, in principle, no strenuous objection to this change. But that said: 1] this change of translators is not made clear (i.e. so far as I can tell it is indicated only during the introduction on the recording itself --for example, neither Audible nor Amazon mention it in their blurbs for the recording); and 2] I wish that the original publisher (Naxos) and/or reader (Jason) had selected a published version of a translation for this recording (that is, so far as I can determine, Whiting's translation is not otherwise available aside from this recording).

The book arrived on time, I like that it is a binder book as that allows me to pull out the pages and walk around just with the pages that I need. It arrived on time. The read was neither here nor there for me. I read it for a class and although I did well on that class, the book was not a fluid as I would have liked it to be.

Studies conduc ted during the last decade have shown that callus cultures, especially on peridical subculturing over an extended period of time, undergo morpho logical and genetic changes, i. e. polyploidy, aneuploidy, chromosome breakage, deletions, translocations, gene amplification, inversions, muta tions, etc. In addition, there are changes at the molecular and biochemical levelsincluding changes in the DNA, enzymes, proteins, etc. Suchchanges are now intentionally induced, and useful variants are selected. For instance in agricultural crops such as potato, tomato, tobacco, maize, rice and sugarcane, plants showing tolerance to a number of diseases, viruses, herbicides and salinity, have been isolated in cell cultures. Likewise induction of male sterility in rice, and wheat showing various levels of fer tility and gliadin, have been developed in vitro. These academic excercises open new avenues for plant breeders and pathologists. Another area of tremendous commercial importance in the pharmaceuti cal industry is the selection of cell lines showing high levels of medicinal and industrial compounds. Already high shikonin containing somaclones in Lithospermum are being used commercially.

Wish someone would do a better job writing about these three amazing men, their relationship as well as the company they created

I was an executive at Intel from 1984-1999 (Corp. Vice President) and had the honor of knowing Noyce, Moore and Grove. I found the book odd. It was very superficial about so many things and then would go in depth on other things. The section on Andy's early life was overly detailed while there was not enough about Gordon. Frankly, the book feels lazy to me. It felt like Malone just wrote up thing he could easily find. He was suppose to have access to Intel's archives for whatever that is worth. We were thought not to keep much because of legal issues. There were also a number of factual errors.
I did benefit from learning more about the early years at Fairchild.
Hated the title by the way. It is worth reading this book as long as you realize that it is just a piece of the story of these three amazing men and even less a history of Intel.

A Must Read Book

This is a "must have" book for anyone who wants to know about the early history of integrated circuits, the microprocessor, and Silicon Valley. The Valley of Heart's Delight, as it was known before Don Hoefler's 1971 naming, was and is truly an amazing place with remarkable individuals. As a young electrical engineer, I first came out to Palo Alto because there were two minicomputer companies with headquarters within two miles of each other -- Varian Associates and Hewlett-Packard. HP had just gotten into the minicomputer business in 1967 and was eager to sell its new machines. They gave my upstart Ann Arbor-based company $100,000 worth of equipment and 60 days credit terms to pay for it. Our company had a net worth of $3,000 and I was 25 years old. HP had the true Silicon Valley start-up spirit.

The next time I came to the Bay Area was when I read the Electronic News two page advertisement for the 4004 chip on November 15, 1971, "Announcing a new era of integrated electronics -- a micro-programmable computer on a chip." Few believed. None of the 80 or so minicomputer companies, led by Digital Equipment and Data General, took it seriously. Luckily I did and moved here.
Mike Malone perfectly captures this whole era in Part II: Start-Up (1968-1971) and Part III: The Spirit of the Age (1972-1987).

Mike Malone explains the three different personalities of the founders. When you call Andy Grove "paranoid" he certainly was.
Andy believed spies were everywhere. When I went to an analyst meeting and arrived early, I went to the bathroom with my briefcase. A secretary quickly followed me into the bathroom and told me I had to check the briefcase before being allowed into the analyst meeting. I said this was ridiculous and she replied that this was on strict orders from Andy Grove. Another time, when I asked a technical question, Andy Grove prefaced his remark by accusing me of being "a Motorola spy." I made the mistake of saying that the 16-bit Motorola 68000 microprocessor was a superior product. Read Chapter 20, "Crush", in which Mike Malone explains that the great marketing of the microprocessor beat the great engineering of Motorola.

If you weren't in Silicon Valley in the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s, you can capture the spirit by reading this remarkable book.

Important business lessons from Intel's history

Intel’s greatest strength has been its willingness to take huge risks, even betting the company, according to Michael Malone in this book. On the occasions when those bets have failed, the company has clawed its way back into the game through superhuman effort and will,... and then immediately gone on to take yet more risks.

The story starts in September 1957 when the “Traitorous Eight” employees of Shockley Transistor left to form their own company, which became Fairchild Semiconductor. When Fairchild started falling apart a decade later, two of its key scientists and leaders, Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore, decided to start a new business, and Andy Grove joined them as their first employee at Intel. The book goes on to describe Intel’s ups and downs over the ensuing 45 years.

Gordon Moore had first observed in 1965 that the complexity of integrated circuits was doubling every year, and in the 1970s the doubling of computer chip performance every two years became known as Moore’s Law. Intel Corporation, as the keeper of Moore’s Law, proceeded over the next several decades to innovate at the required rate, using a combination of science and business cunning to stay ahead of its competitors.

It is a well-crafted story, although perhaps a bit longer than necessary. Intel seems to have “come roaring out” or “come roaring back” after downturns quite a few times, and the traits of some characters get repeated a bit. I have no personal knowledge of the key individuals, but can’t help suspecting that they have been a little bit stereotyped. For example, I suspect that Andy Grove’s attitude towards Bob Noyce was more nuanced than the animosity portrayed by the author.

Notwithstanding these minor issues, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Intel Corporation has had a profound effect not only on the field of electronics but on the world as a whole. It has been one of the key players in the digital revolution, and there is a great deal to learn from the manner in which the company has been run, and its successes and failures over the years.
