Presenting the Past: Psychoanalysis and the Sociology of Misremembering, by Jeffrey Prager

Psychology is the dogma of our age; psychotherapy is our means of self-understanding; and "repressed memory" is now a universally familiar form of trauma. Jeffrey Prager, who is both a sociologist and a psychoanalyst, explores the degree to which we manifest the clichs of our culture in our most private recollections.

At the core of Presenting the Past is the dramatic and troubling case of a woman who during the course of her analysis began to recall scenes of her own childhood sexual abuse. Later the patient came to believe that the trauma she remembered as a physical violation might have been an emotional violation and that she had composed a memory out of present and past relationships. But what was accurate and true? And what evidence could be persuasive and valuable? Could the analyst trust either her convictions or his own? Using this case and others, Prager explores the nature of memory and its relation to the interpersonal, therapeutic, and cultural worlds in which remembering occurs.

Synthesizing research from social science, psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology, Prager uses clinical examples to argue more generally that our memories are never simple records of events, but constantly evolving constructions, affected by contemporary culture as well as by our own private lives. He demonstrates the need that sociology has for the insights of psychoanalysis, and the need that psychoanalysis has for the insights of sociology.

Review
In his thought-provoking Presenting the Past, Jeffrey Prager examines the phenomena of recovered memory and the influences of therapy. Interweaving his theoretical stance with a single case study, he describes his work as 'a psychoanalytic treatment to explore the complicated relation between the individual and the collective, and the ways in which the cultural interpenetrates the most individual of pursuits, memory and self-constitution'...Prager skilfully moves the reader from the therapeutic setting to the wider social context and back again, allowing us insight into [his patient's] experience from two perspectives, her relationships with family and her therapist, and the influence of the culture in which she was living. (Janet Feigenbaum Times Literary Supplement)

It is often referred to as the Tolstoy question. Do great men help to create zeitgeist, or are they simply its pawns?...Prager has written an engaging contribution to the vast literature on this topic which is particularly valuable because it focuses on memory. People often forget that memory, too, is part of the self and therefore one of the proper subjects for 'Tolstoy' debate. (Chris Nunn Journal of Consciousness Studies)

Prager's Presenting the Past is an extraordinarily ambitious project, one that is constructed and checked by the complex relationship between psychoanalysis and sociology. Confronting head-on the recent culture wars, and in particular debates about the veracity of traumatic memories, Presenting the Past is at the same time personal and philosophical, intersubjective and cultural, psychodynamic and sociological. Prager displays a formidable command of recent research in sociology, social theory, cognitive psychology, psychoanalysis and neuroscience, and a powerful vision of how such discourses can be synthesized to place the constitution of memory in relation to the intrapsychic, interpersonal, and cultural worlds in which it occurs. To sustain the vision, while emphasizing throughout the dialectical relationship between the psyche and society, is an impressive achievement...Prager's analytical narrative is captivating throughout. This is advanced psychoanalytic social theory at its finest, capturing--through a detailed case study--the complex relation between psyche and society, memory and history, the personal and the political, intersubjectivity and culture. Prager's Presenting the Past offers a first-rate social theory of memory. (Anthony Elliot Psychoanalytic Studies)

In this compelling book, Jeffrey Prager has created a sociology of memory, showing how memory is situated in interpersonal contexts, and draws from cultural tropes. At the same time, he challenges the social sciences to open their epistemological and methodological doors to case studies of individuals and to recognize that subjectivity is personally created rather than socially or culturally determined. Psychoanalysis, he documents, takes us well beyond the experientially and interpretively thin sociological subject. (Nancy J. Chodorow, Member and Faculty, San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Professor of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley)

[This book] presents a thoughtful and at times provocative analysis of social and subjective aspects of remembering. The book is a serious, careful, and scholarly attempt to shift the emphasis in memory theory from the individual mind/brain to the social contexts in which remembering occurs in everyday life. Drawing on his dual backgrounds in psychoanalysis and sociology, Prager is able to put together an analysis that contains unique and sometimes revealing perspectives concerning the process of remembering. (Daniel L. Schacter, Department Chair and Professor of Psychology, Harvard University)

No debate has become more vexed in recent decades than that about human memory, and no one has brought more intelligence, balance, and gentleness to that debate than Jeffrey Prager. He gives us a brilliant clinical interpretation of a patient who successively 'doesn't remember,' 'remembers,' and 'unremembers' childhood sexual 'experiences' and then brings alive vast, additional ranges of psychological and social evidence about memory. How often is a book so scholarly also so compelling that one can't put it down? Almost never, but that is what happened to me. (Neil Smelser, Director, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences)

This talented writer brings together insights from sociology and psychoanalysis to give new meaning to the malleability of human memory. His readers will take away a deep appreciation for this fundamental truth: memory cannot be set apart from the personal, temporal, and cultural context in which it occurs. (Elizabeth Loftus, Professor of Psychology, University of Washington and President, American Psychological Society)

Finally we have a book that puts the false memory debate into a fresh perspective. Both lucidly analytical and emotionally compelling, Presenting the Past is the riveting story of one woman's journey to self-understanding. But Jeffrey Prager's stakes are larger; he confronts the hardest questions about how the individual self fits into the social world. Memory and identity are combined here in a book that will set the agenda for discussion for years to come. (Lynn Hunt, Annenberg Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania)

Prager brings a thoroughly reasoned and balanced viewpoint to a contentious problem--the veracity of traumatic memories. He documents that remembering is not simply the product of individual minds but must be understood in an intersubjective and cultural context. Presenting the Past provides a much needed and refreshing clarity to this controversial and highly politicized subject. (Arnold Modell, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School)

Moral Darwinism: How We Became Hedonists, by Benjamin Wiker

Abortion. Euthanasia. Infanticide. Sexual promiscuity. Ideas and actions once unthinkable have become commonplace. We seem to live in a different moral universe than we occupied just a few decades ago. Consent and noncoercion seem to be the last vestiges of a morality long left behind. Christian moral tenets are now easily dismissed and have been replaced with what is curiously presented as a superior, more magnanimous, respectful and even humble morality. How did we end up so far away from where we began? Can the decline be stopped? Ben Wiker, in this provocative and insightful book, traces the amazing story that explains our present cultural situation. Wiker finds the roots of our moral slide reaching all the way back to the ethical theory and atheistic cosmology of the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus. Christian teaching had been in contention with this worldview long before it reached its pinnacle with the rise and acceptance of Darwinism. But it was Darwinism, Wiker contends, that provided this ancient teaching with the seemingly modern and scientific basis that captured twentieth-century minds. Wiker demonstrates that this ancient atomistic and materialistic philosophy supplies the guiding force behind Darwinism and powerfully propels the hedonistic bent of our society while promoting itself under the guise of pure science. This book is a challenge not only to those who believe Darwinism to be purely scientific fact but to Christian who have at times inconsistently lived out their Christian moral convictions and so have failed to recognize and address the ancient corrosive underpinnings of our present moral and intellectual crisis.

Review
"Several authors have attempted to get at the roots of the current culture war. James Davison Hunter has traced its sociological roots. Robert Bork has traced its political roots. Phillip Johnson has traced its Darwinian roots. But none of them has traced the historical roots of the culture war back to its metaphysical foundation. Ben Wiker does that brilliantly in the present book. . . . If you really want to understand why our culture is in its current state, you must read this book." (William A. Dembski, author of Intelligent Design (from the foreword))

"It was once taken as a matter of course that ideas once argued and reargued in Greek philosophy kept recurring in different ways in subsequent philosophical systems and eras. Classical materialism was not as unrelated to modern materialism as one might suspect. Marx studied Epicurus. Benjamin Wiker here traces this history of scientific and moral materialism. What is unique about his book is that he sees this materialism in scientists who often did not see what their own terms implied. As Chesterton said, 'We must either not argue with a man at all, or argue with him on his terms.' This is what Wiker does with the not totally surprising result that science more and more tends itself to suggest that its own materialism is not as well founded as at first sight seemed to be the case. Even Christians are surprised by this turn of events or better facts. Intrinsic designs and a cosmos appearing suddenly from evidently nothing keep the materialist philosophers wondering. Wiker's subtitle, How We All Became Hedonists, hints at something Aristotle already knew—that hedonism explains neither itself nor the evolution of the world and what it means to understand it." (James V. Schall, S. J., Georgetown University, (Washington, D.C.))

"The core components of a worldview hang together in intricate and important ways. More particularly, the ethical vision of a worldview is usually grounded in the worldview’s depiction of reality, especially of human persons and of how we got here. This is one reason why, given the current moral crisis, it is ill advised to attempt to combine a materialist anthropology and a Darwinist creation myth with a Christian worldview. Benjamin Wiker’s timely book does a masterful job of providing a readable historical sketch of the interrelationships among these ideas and thereby provides a warning to those Christians who seek a facile compromise with a materialist view of human persons and a Darwinist understanding of origins." (J. P. Moreland, professor of philosophy, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, and author (with Scot Rae) of Body and Soul (IVP))

"Ben Wiker's book is profound, practical and provocative. It reveals some of the most important and disturbing--yet neglected--truths about the ancient philosophical roots of what is usually presented as 'modern science.' Wiker shows how much of Darwinism is not only anti-religious but unscientific. This is a very important book." (Scott Hahn, Franciscan University of Steubenville (Steubenville, Ohio))

"Darwinian evolution pretends to be modern empirical science, but it is merely the latest manifestation of an ancient materialistic philosophy. In this fascinating book, Benjamin Wiker exposes the true nature of Darwinism and its profoundly poisonous consequences for morality. If you thought that the present controversy over evolution and intelligent design was a localized dispute about science education, think again. At stake is nothing less than the future of our civilization." (Jonathan Wells, author of Icons of Evolution)

"In this excellent book, Ben Wiker shows decisively that America's moral decline is a product of the Darwinian worldview which, in turn, is a revival of ancient materialist philosophy. The book traces key aspects of today's "culture war" back to the dawn of Western thought, giving a clear-sighted guide to how history shapes the present battle." (Nancy Pearcey, coauthor of How Now Shall We Live? and The Soul of Science)

"Benjamin Wiker masterfully traces the ancient roots of the conflict between belief in the intelligent design of the universe and atheistic materialism. This wonderfully written book is a must-read for understanding our modern culture wars." (Michael J. Behe, professor of biochemisty, LeHigh University)

"I have written several books about the foundations of evolution, but I learned much from this superb volume, particularly about the enduring importance of Epicurus and his philosophy." (Phillip E. Johnson, author of Darwin on Trial and Reason in the Balance)

From Epicurus to Darwin
By Phillip Johnson
Although I have written six books about Darwinism, I learned much from Ben Wiker's book. Wiker tells the engrossing story of the centuries-long contest between Epicureanism and Christianity, with the Epicureans finally winning their long battle to impose their philosophy on science and the cultural definition of "knowledge." Exploiting the authority of science, Epicureans were able to seize the high moral and intellectual ground for agosticism and materialism, thereby demoting Christianity from its prior intellectual prominence into the marginalized status it now occupies in the intellectual and university world. The Epicurean objective always has been and remains to achieve a moral objective by effectively banning the supernatural from reality, and with it any fear of judgment after death. Attaining this objective prepared the way for all the events we associate with the 1960s. Ben Wiker's intellectual history tells us far more than any scientific book could of the purpose and effect of the long campaign to establish matrialism as the governing philosophy of the world. I highly recommend it.

Western Civilization in a Nutshell
By Brad Shorr
Anyone seeking to understand the moral plight of the Western world should drop everything and read this book. The author presents a sweeping history of materialist moral philosophy from ancient Greece to current day. For Wiker, Western morality is split crisply and catastrophically into two utterly irreconcilable camps: the Epicurean, in which man is the measure of all things, and the Judeo-Christian, in which God is the measure of all things. Epicurus believed the goal of man is to reduce his personal pain and discomfort. Starting with this conclusion, he backed into a cosmology to support it, one which excludes the possibilities of (a) an afterlife and (b) divine interference with human affairs, both of which constrain our actions and leave us in a continual state of apprehension. It follows in the Epicurean view that nature is random and therefore without purpose. If nature is random, then there are no values or behaviors we humans are required to embrace. This conception of morality and its supporting cosmology, dormant from roughly Constantine to the Renaissance, revived when scientific discovery seemed to support Epicurean cosmic theories. It gained momentum as science advanced and eventually overwhelmed Judeo-Christian cosmology and morality, at least in terms of our social practices and laws. Wiker does an absolutely magnificent job of critiquing a host of enormously influential materialist figures including Newton, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Darwin himself, elegantly and convincingly tracing their ideas back to their Epicurean sources, and revealing the true essence and implications of their ideas. Unfortunately, in a world where one person's idea of right and wrong is as good as another's, where the only true definition of right and wrong is how it makes us feel, abuses, miseries, and horrors are bound to ensue. As Wiker reviews the thought of such modern day monsters as Ernst Haeckel, Margaret Sanger, and Alfred Kinsey, we begin to get an idea of how awful the materialist's reality can be. And yet, Wiker points out that although scientific advances in our day undermine the random view of nature and strongly support a designer universe, the materialist habit of thought is so deeply ingrained that we cling to relativistic moral positions required by random nature anyway. There are so many fascinating ideas in this book it is almost impossible to summarize. But, I think it can help anyone put his/her ideas in perspective and offer some refreshingly sensible insight about our culture, which seems so irreconcilably split over issues like abortion, euthanasia, recreational drugs, etc., etc.

All seriousness aside...
By Jennifer A. Atkinson
I would like to share my personal knowledge of the author. I have had the pleasure of studying under Dr. Wiker's guidance in three classes at my college. He is intelligent and humourous. He can take a complex subject, break it down, and help you come to understand it and appreciate it, similar to that great writer, C.S. Lewis. I have read a number of other articles that he has written on various subjects, and I have yet to be disappointed by his ability to convey an important and valid idea with simplicity and and a sense of the practical applications of the theoretical. If you have any interest in philosophy, or evolution, or theology: this is a book that is sure to offer a new perspective on all three. You will enjoy it, and come away with new knowledge and new thoughts that you might need to mull over, and consider, before you come back for a second read.

Sweet story
By mary tatar
I have to say this was a pretty sweet read for me. I actually ended up reading it in one night. I loved the two main characters Jake and Danny, their small town love story was so endearing. I enjoyed reading about them.

Danny and Jake were high school sweethearts, Jake was two years older than Danny. Everyone was expecting they get married, but Danny wasn't ready for that kind of commitment. She wanted to get of their small town and experience big city life. She ended up leaving one night without even a goodbye. Jake was devastated and it changed him. All he ever wanted to do is forget about Danny. Danny ends up coming back to town after her relationship and job ended. It was a fresh start for her. Seven years have passed since she has seen Jake and she is scared to death. Will they finally have closure? Has Jake forgiven her? Will they finally get their happily ever after or does Jake have other plans for Danny?

This book had so many sweet moments it will make your heart melt. I enjoyed reading about these long lost lovers reconnecting. Their feelings never faltered. They both just lived their lives never forgetting what the other meant to them. Not only is this a story of loving and losing you first love, but also finding them again and moving on. I love how very protective and understanding that Jake was with Danny. Once he found her again there was nothing that was going to stand in his way. Danny was so sweet and caring, but independent and strong at the same time. They both come from wonderful families and have strong values. They have some road blocks in the story, ones that neither could of suspected. Their story was very captivating, I was rooting for them through the entire book.

I am so glad I got the opportunity to read this light and refreshing story of loving, losing, and finding that love again. I would recommend that is you are looking for a sweet story with a heroic cowboy then this is the book for you. Seriously who doesn't like cowboys.

Brought back fond memories
By Jburns731
From the very beginning, I was enthralled with this story line. It brought back such bittersweet memories of my own high school love. I haven't thought of him in a long time but when I started reading this book, I was transported back to the age of 17 and was madly in love, all over again. The memories brought back were welcome, even if a little painful. I loved reliving those days, every minute of it. I love books that can touch my life so deeply, so profoundly, like this one has! Kudos to the writer; she did an excellent job of drawing me in and helping me connect with the characters on a personal level.

Thank you.

Enjoyable read
By MsRomanticReads
Considering my first Novel by Jaden Wilkes was a dark erotic romance, I was surprised by how mainstream this story was. Pleasantly surprised, I might add.

For most of the story, I liked Danny's confidence despite her nervousness of seeing Jake again. She had the right blend of boldness mixed with a little bit of vulnerability.

Jake seemed stoic whenever we weren't privy to his thoughts. I loved that he could still feel tied up in knots around Danny.

Their history was presented in small doses through their memories of happier times, so I believed the love they once had for one another, but I also understood Danny's struggle with having to choose between getting out of her small town and becoming Jake's wife versus spreading her wings.

It didn't come as a surprise that Jake was seeking a little payback for what she'd done to him, but it showed his maturity that he was able to reel himself in and not go the route of an eye for an eye. In the seven years they'd been apart, I think their chemistry was even stronger since they'd both lived through some heartaches. I liked the glimpses of them when love was still young and untainted, but I also enjoyed their journey into becoming who they were as adults.

Their road to happiness wasn't a smooth one. Between Jake's ex-wife and Danny's ex-boyfriend, they stirred up enough trouble to threaten the newly formed relationship. Somewhere past the half way mark, I began to dislike Danny a little for keeping Matt's texts a secret from Jake. I understood why she did it, but it just seemed like a weak excuse considering she'd been so firm and confident up until that point. I thought the unfortunate misunderstandings through lack of communication were a bit forced when they could have easily been cleared up had they talked to one another. I just felt that they were in a stronger place to deal with problems when everything went down. Alas, I have to admit that the drama made for a sweet and ridiculously romantic ending though.

Reverse Cowgirl (I love the play on words alluding not only to the sexual position, but also the essence of who Danny was - from cowgirl to city girl and reverting back to her roots) was a sweet and very hot romance with a bit of suspense and drama to make you care about them. And it kept you hoping that they'd realize what a gift that second chance at love was.

Note: The book had quite a few errors (tenses, homophones). I purchased my copy in June 2014. maybe it has since been updated.

This should have been a flop. Yet why am I still shaking.
By Aaron
If your fortunate to have landed a copy of Psycho 2, I must be respectful to the public audience and warn you: your in for a big surprise. The prose is simple and efficent, Bloch dosen't bother with tantilising us with un-neccessary diolouge- everything that's in this book is there for a reason and every sentence has an alterior motive. I'm am 17 years old and I cant help asking, why dosen't anyone know who Bloch is. He's a mascot of writers past. He has influenced many writers ( McDonald, King, Straub) and myself. This is a fantastic book, very enjoyable and totally unpredicatable. Why was it never adapted for film? Bloch at his best.

Well...
By N. Dennis
Well, I dont really know what to say. It is certainly much larger than the first book, but it doesnt get many more good points than that. It has a good begining that gets you wanting to read more and more, but in between the first few chapters and the end, it talks about hollywood life ... I kept reading because I thought it was going somewhere, but I was wrong. The begining and the end were good, but the 3hundred pages or so in between were just awefull. I only recomend it if you are a die hard Robert Bloch fan.

Not Like the Movie
By Ann Sherry
Surprisingly this book has nothing in common with the movie "Psycho II" other than the title. I was glad, because I didn't enjoy this at all and that is rare for me to dislike something by Robert Bloch. It's a most forgettable book. It's good to obtain to see what it's like. But for entertainment purposes, I'd watch the movie instead. The movie takes us back to the Bates Motel with Norman getting out of the mental hospital after many years. And that's what we expect when we hear "Psycho II". Not this.

This book brought out every emotion in the spectrum.
By Michelle Ford Copley
I LOVE this series! I don't know, I think Kenyon is magic...She can take the most hated character in a series and in the space of less than 800 pages make them one of your favorite characters. Jullien was a character that I loved to hate, but like in her other series (Dark Hunter) that one character that makes you want to strangle-- settles right into your heart. She is a master at this and I find I must read everything she puts in print. Jullien and Ushara are amazing together and Ushara is the perfect mate for this broken male. Ushara is no sissy, she is a VERY strong female, in a world that has a strong matriarchal presence. It took me 4 good days to get through this book and I am a fairly quick reader. My reading time is at a premium anymore. I laughed, I cried, I felt the emotions strongly from these characters. She also introduced us to more characters I am looking forward to getting to know and of course we got to see some of the old characters though not nearly as much as in some of her past books in this series. Jullien was the twin to another hero in this series, Nyk. Throughout the series we saw a LOT of reasons to hate Jullien but with this addition we see behind the scenes and see why he was the way he was. We get to know the relationship between he and his family and it is pretty horrific. There could be triggers in this book if you are sensitive. I can not recommend this book highly enough and will be doing another read of it in a week or so. It was just that darn good. I am looking forward to her next release which I think is in August, so I will probably re read that series again to prepare for it. The male characters in her series are serious Alpha males but they can be tender with those they care deeply for. I found myself cheering for Jullien's every triumph. There are only 2 authors I get this attached to the characters in their books and Kenyon is definitely one.

SIX STARS and my favorite Kenyon ever
By Christina Wilson
Can I give a book SIX stars?
Sherrilyn Kenyon's League series has long been my favorite of all her series. When I heard she was expanding the original trilogy, I was SO excited and happy. And most of those books have lived up to my expectations, earning 4 or 5 stars in my mental rating system. This book, however - If I could give it a 6-star review, I would. In fact, it just might have knocked the original trio off the top as my favorite (not sure, I'll have to re-read the entire series to be sure :-) )
I find there are often three main themes running through Ms. Kenyon's work: 1) every being (human or otherwise) has flaws, 2) there are always at least two sides to every story, and 3) no one is beyond forgiveness and redemption. In this book, I believe she fully illustrates all three themes better than in any of her others (even the Acheron/Styx twin series from the Dark Hunter series).
Firstly, the characters in this series are a product of the environment and times they inhabit - a BRUTAL, violent world where assassination and death are common and frequent. Honor, true friendship, trust, and loyalty are rare. Supposed friends will sell each other out for the right price. Even families can't trust each other - especially among the higher echelons of power, and they don't hesitate to wipe each other out for gain. Parents often don't like their children, and vice versa, and child abuse - it happens and mostly, no one bats an eye or cares. You have to understand that to understand how parents could so love one child and so horribly mistreat another. Favored children are pampered and spoiled, un-favored children are lucky to be alive.
Each of Ms. Kenyon's books makes a "superhero" of the main character. The story within those pages is about that character, and events within the timeline of the book are from their POV. Born of Legend is the "twin" counterpart to the very FIRST book in the League series, Born of Night. In BON, Nykarian (Jullien's twin) was the superhero. And what a superhero he was! He was everyone's white knight, dressed in black, riding in the save the day. Of course, he had his flaws, but they were relatively few and easily forgivable. His family, including Jullien, played a truly horrible role in his story, abusing and torturing him, kidnapping his wife, etc. At the end of the book, however, we discover his parents were not to blame for their supposed actions and were exonerated of any wrong-doing, all is forgiven, and he goes on to become heir to TWO kingdoms. But not Jullien - he is disinherited, disowned, exiled and then his character disappears and is largely forgotten except as an occasional footnote to mention what a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad person he is/was. This theme of Nyk as hero continues through most of the ensuing novels in the series. Some protagonist does something terrible to the hero or love interest in the book, and eventually Nyk and/or his ever growing band of allies rides in at the end to aid in the rescue. (Yes, I do realize that's not JUST a writer's ploy to tie the novels together, but because loyal readers actually expect to "visit" the characters in the series to see what they're up to.)
In Born of Legend, we at last get to find out what happened to one of the most disliked characters in the League universe - Nik's twin brother Jullien. We get to hear HIS side of the story - HIS motivation for his horrible actions in Born of Night. And like in many of Ms. Kenyon's novels, we discover Jullien's world was not "wine-and-roses", as expected. Jullien is absolutely a flawed character and he absolutely owns up to those flaws, sometimes to his detriment, leading to self-loathing, hasty action, and self-harm. In Born of Legend, we experience his redemption story from hitting absolute rock bottom and near death to self-redemption, forgiving himself, shaking off his past and finally accepting the life he has built for himself, without looking back.
And yes, Nyk, our previously "perfect" superhero, is knocked a bit askew on his pedestal. We discover he is perhaps not himself without flaws. Great assassin? Absolutely. Great ruler? Ummm, not yet. That takes a knowledge and understanding of politics and diplomacy, and neither are found at the end of a blaster. Those will take some time to develop. And Kiara? Great mom, yes, but the years haven't made her any calmer or more level-headed in an emergency. And hearing someone else's description of both characters was... eye-opening.
By the course of the book, we see no one is beyond redemption and forgiveness (and if others can't find that forgiveness yet, that's their damage). His character, too, is a person worthy of admiration, rather than any carry-over dislike you might have expected at the start of the book.

The Best of the Series!
By Shauni

********************BEWARE SPOILERS AHEAD******************

Maybe not extreme spoilers but things of definite note.

Born of Legend is Book 9 in the amazing Sherrilyn Kenyon's League Series. In many ways it has leap frogged to the top of my favorite Kenyon Series. Maybe because it remains true to the beginning.. and maybe because it's just that good.

We all know you can't have a Kenyon hero without him having a tortured soul, it's just not possible. Each hero has to overcome some pretty nasty stuff. And on occasion (Styxx) he also has to overcome our preconceived notions. Yep, Sherrie manages to redeem the unredeemable. I bring that up because Born of Legend also redeems the unredeemable. Julian En Anatole.. And it was an amazing ride. This time, Sherrie gets it near perfect! In Styxx it was almost overkill and Zanax was definitely required and there were times when I hated Ash.. yeah not goo. But This time... It was less overkill and more emotional. More an adult who has to deal with the remnants of an abusive childhood, both physical and emotional. A child who was neglected, drugged and turned into the scapegoat of a nation. But Julian, AKA Dagger, rose above it all. Became the man he dreamed of being. Was he perfect? Nope...

We start Born of Legend when Julian was on his last hope, he was determined to die and he decided to do so by saving a child. That one action truly changed his life. Introduced him to the woman who became his "Darling Star" his guiding light, his very reason for being. And in turn helped him to overcome a dark and desperate past to be the man he dreamed of. But more than that, he became a true legend.

Ushara is Trivali, a race hammered together of outlaws with a code. She is the second in command and pretty much has it all. Has it all until her son is kidnapped and she is desperate to find him, to save him. What she finds is a stranger willing to give his life for her child. A Stranger broken in heart and body but still willing to save a child. How can Ushara NOT fall for this guy. As she begins to realize just who he is, she knows she should encourage him to move on, to start over somewhere else. I mean his family pretty much destroyed her entire race.. ooops. But she can't she keeps seeing the man behind the mask.

Ushara has the strength and fortitude that no one in Julian's life has ever had AND she believes in him. He is not perfect and he's most definitely a work in progress. That and he always puts the family that left him first. Kind of irksome but as I said, Julian evolves. He creates his own family. He becomes a hero, a legend to his new people. And when it comes time to save the family of his past he goes and faces those demons as well.

And there were some serious cheer moments.. Like when Mama dearest tries to claim him as her son and she is totally slapped down by the woman who has adopted him into her lineage.. Or when Thraix (a friend) wants to know where Julian gets his intelligence because it obviously wasn't from anyone in his side of the family. A total slap down.. Brilliantly done.

What I really enjoyed is that we don't have to hate Nykerian.. Julian did some pretty crappy stuff to him in the past but Nyk understands that there were circumstances.. BUT.. happily ever after? BFF's?

This was a story of redemption, personal redemption and finding your own place in the world. Not living up to or down to the expectations of others but living your own life. Your own dreams and becoming the person you want to be.

Just wonderful!
