First I gotta say I really enjoy listening to Steve Ray every time he's on Catholic Answers Live on the local EWTN radio station. His energy and his knowledge and his patience and his question answering ability about the Catholic church is just amazing.

I love this book for its content and Steve's tale of conversion. That being said I'm disappointed in what the book turned out to be. I was expecting to hear about his journey. Instead, according to my Kindle app, I find I'm done reading the book at only 43%. That's right 57% of this book is footnotes!

I would say Steve's story itself is maybe 10 percent or less of the 43% of the book. The rest of the book (while fine) reads more like a college paper. He sets up three topics and then defends them with EXTENSIVE quotes from the bible, the catechism and the church fathers, not much of his own story or his way of defending the church. Which is fine, but I didn't think I was purchasing a simple reference book. I want to hear Steve talk not simply quote source material.

I feel this book is meant to be purchased printed so that you can give it to a protestant to read or to have on hand for quick reference. But you'll need a lot more reference books because Steve only covers those three topics.

A relentless search for truth whereever it leads

Steve had a problem. He knew Jesus was for real but he was beginning to find that his presuppositions about the church were not. This is the story of how he fought against the Tiber tide until he could fight no longer and gave in to that which he had persecuted for so long. ("Crossing the Tiber" or "Swimming the Tiber" is popular Catholic convert slang referring to the Tiber river in Rome with regard to joining the Roman Catholic church.) Steve is one of many Protestants who had realized their one defining principle was that they were not Catholic. Their search for the roots of their faith led them to see the internal contradictions in the Protestant worldview and the discoveries were frightening and life-altering. Steve was goaded on to the deep Tiber waters by his loving wife and it is clear that the changes have been a spiritual empowerment in their family.

With extensive footnotes that do not distract from the primary text, Steve relays their story as he first wrote it down for friends and family. It is a heartfelt and appealing story that makes us want to join in the journey with them. The journey ends with their somewhat hesitant realization that Jesus was alive and well in the Catholic church they had distrusted. It was a conversion not far from that of the Apostle Paul in realizing the one whom they persecuted was calling them to His family.

The brief overview of the Ray family conversion is just the beginning. Steve adds to that story an historical, scriptural, and enlightening study of Baptism and then of the Eucharist. Each of the three sections could stand alone in scope and depth of study, especially in light of the extensive footnotes and references. It is a conversion story that packs a theological wallop without skipping a beat. Emotionally and intellectually challenging and inspiring at the same time. You will not easily dismiss this incredible treatise of faith.

She gives concrete details on what constitutes abuse and shatters the myths surrounding double standards (e.g., actor Don Johnson being seduced by a female babysitter when he was 12 constitutes abuse, yet this "older woman on younger boy" style of abuse is sometimes written off). In addition to identifying the many types of abuse, Maltz demonstrates how abuse may get buried in a victim's unconscious mind and subsequently cause sexual dysfunction. She carefully deconstructs the common negative sexuality that often acts as a defense mechanism, and attempts to replace it with a healthy, positive approach to sex. An invaluable ingredient in my recovery

What I particularly appreciate about this book is its inclusive approach to the subject. While many books speak to heterosexual women who were victims of incest over a long period, this book speaks directly to people of all genders, sexual orientations, and the entire spectrum of sexual abuse experiences.

I bought this book, which is titled The Sexual Healing Journey, when I started healing from being abused in my childhood. When I first read this thorough book I felt able to relate to many of the topics. The topics included discussion on different types of sexual abuse, problems actual survivors developed as a result of abuse, positive assertion of the topic sexuality.
While reading the book, The Sexual Healing Journey, the author occasionally talked about her experiences of being sexually abused. I respected her ability to recover and turn her trauma into a positive experience, by helping other survivors of abuse in her councelling practice.
The author, Wendy Maltz, talked about these topics gently, I felt safe reading The sexual Healing Journey because of the books gentle tone. When I read a book, The Courage To Heal, I noticed the tone was rough. This rough tone was one reason I returned the book the next day.
I have referred to the book The Sexual Healing Journey many times after the first time I read this book.
I really found the book helpful in my recovery

Straight Talking, Honest, Helpful Book

This is the first place I recognized my bizarre behavior as not being unique. In reading the first few chapters, I was massively relieved to find that other people had experienced the same strange feelings and behavior I had all of my life. Although difficult to read and I found resistance to doing to the exercises, this book is helpful and honest, I highly recommend it for anyone who has had frustration with overcoming sexual fright.

Marcovaldo is a wonderful collection of short stories, or vignettes, of a poor urban laborer's dogged attempts to find nature and solace in the city. The stories are brief and often hilarious. I enjoyed it immensely!

It's hard not to admire the people who enjoy simple things... as long as they don't get out of touch with the reality. That seems to be the idea behind Italo Calvino's "Marcovaldo: Or the Seasons in the City," a warm little novel that shows the joys of life -- and the weird truths behind them.

Marcovaldo is an unskilled laborer in a rather dreary Italian city, with a stressed wife and a bunch of somewhat dopey kids. He also has an eye for beauty and an idealistic love of natural bounty. A stray rabbit, a blanket of snow, a peaceful park bench, a hidden stash of mushrooms, a trip to the countryside with his children, and a bus on a foggy night.

Marcovaldo revels in the natural beauty and good fortune that come to him on these occasions. Unfortunately, they aren't quite as wonderful as he thinks -- every time, something bizarre and unlucky happens to him, whether it's the noises of urban nighttime, the realities of farm work, diseased rabbits, a plane to Bombay, a minor avalanche, or a bad case of food poisoning.

Popping little idealistic dreams seems like a pretty mean-spirited thing to do. Yes, even to a fictional character like Marcovaldo. But somehow Italo Calvino's charming little book manages to be mocking and funny without being nasty about it. He's an airhead, and somewhat selfish, but amusingly and likably so.

The book is made up of little short stories, each focusing on one "season in the city," and a new problem for Marcovaldo. In a way, each amusing little story feels like a joke, with the punchline only coming at the end. For example, a walk in the fog and boarding a bus becomes a disaster, when Marcovaldo discovers that the "bus" is actually a plane heading for Bombay.

Here and there, Calvino also adds a bit of magical realism to the otherwise prosaic stories, such as one scene where Marcovaldo sneezes away every flake of snow in a large area. Even if this could never happen in the real world, his lush, almost conversational writing makes it come alive and seem plausible.

Its simple stories keep it from being among Calvino's best, but "Marcovaldo: Or the Seasons In the City" is a charming, offbeat book that takes a slightly more cynical look at idealists.

Michael A. Smith has been involved in hockey for over 40 years as a player, coach and general manager of the New York Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Blackhawks and Team USA. He was an adviser for the National Hockey League and has traveled extensively as a lecturer and studied European training methods in Russia and Sweden. The author of six books on hockey, he lives in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

Like Being At The Movies

Clear, concise, readable, coherent, and beautifully presented. Not a single word of nonsense anywhere. All totally straight-forward and user-friendly.

Keeping things simple is often great advice, and this book follows that philosophy exactly: it sticks to the tried and tested, and to the soundest fundamentals. (And there's never a day when the fundamentals are not required IN ABUNDANCE. In fact, most mistakes come down to breakdowns, or a lack of understanding, of the very basics. In other words, to play hockey well, you don't have to make it complicated.)

The book's key innovation is its step-by-step diagrams. They show how a play, a situation - be it defensive or attacking - evolves. This is done over several drawing; up to eight in some instances. (A single drawing just freezes a moment in time. Then you're left wondering, WHAT NOW? Not here. The diagrams function as a sort of picture show, letting you see what's next. Great stuff.)

Overall, an excellent resource, not only for players and coaches, but for goalies and fans too.

Highly recommended.
