Nice diagrams and pictures

I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano. This book not only teaches basic notes and scales but technique as well. It has nice diagrams and pictures to make learning much easier. It is very simple and has a nice step by step approach to teaching. I like that it has YouTube videos to accompany the book. It's great for the visual learner!

Thorough, yet easy

Not only does this book teach you technique and form, but also helps get that muscle memory moving by taking you deep into the pianist's mind. An example, shared quite early on in the book tells the beginner to not only play the simple three note exercise with their right hand, but to say the note names as they play as well. Incredibly simple, but also incredibly effective.

While the book is easy enough to follow along with - provided YOU have the desire and drive to learn - I must say the best part about this release is the related free video lessons on the YouTube channel. As long as you have an internet connection, you have a digital piano teacher to assure you along the way. Other books may have more detailed writing, trying to explain how to position your fingers to play a certain scale, but actually seeing it done on your computer screen is a godsend.

Overall, for the the price, and including the free video lessons, I believe this is one of the best beginner piano books out there. Now it is up to YOU to become the pianist you've always dreamt of.

It will get you playing

If you want to learn proper theory and technique then this is the piano book to get. As a piano teacher, it is nice to come across a book that covers this from the beginning to advanced levels. This is important even for the casual player. It improves performance and minimizes the chance of a hand injury. You don't want to stress the hands. If you are trying to teach yourself, check out the accompanying youtube videos.

The ebook is quite handy. Next time one of my students forget their books, I'll just pull this up on my phone! The instructions and pictures are easy to follow. I will be supplementing this to the current books I teach from. This book doesn't have songs in it. That's a good thing. Many songs in lesson books tend to be outdated. Not everyone likes that. Following this book, you'll be able to jam to your fav tunes in no time, and hopefully make up some of your own.

    A must read for dental professionals to update vital info!

    Every working and instructing dental professional should readthis text concerning medically compromised patients. It updates, aswell as reviews, the important topics that are seen every day in private practice. Especially important is the areas of TB, HIV, and diabetes, although recent information may need to be added by the practioner (check out internet sites for these). Introductory tables are a must for reference in a clinical situation. I have used it a reference text in my clinical practice and in my continuing education courses.

    Most used textbook during my residencies!

    This was an invaluable book that I only glanced at a few times during dental school, but during both my hospital based-general practice residency and pediatric residency was my constant guide. It provides both medical and dental management for most encountered problems that patients present with and has lots of great quick reference tables!

    Not for everyone, not anymore!

    A little bit out-of-date in the way body systems are reviewed in the Center (body) part of the book. Principally, the single section that I found valuable throughout my Dental school was the summary review of systems that is offered at the front of the book, which worked as a fast reference (basically, I tore that section off from the rest of the book!). Nevertheless, it might still work in a better way when it comes to being used by some residents in certain fields like that of surgery, GPR, AEGD, and so forth where they need to go over the boring center (body) of the book.

    About the Author
    Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in Virginia and died in 1970 after a long and successful career as a lecturer, an author, and as a consultant to business leaders. Think and Grow Rich is the all-time bestseller in its field, having sold 15 million copies worldwide, and sets the standard for today’s motivational thinking.
    James Allen was born in Leicester, England, in 1864. He took his first job at age 15 to support his family, after his father was murdered while looking for work in America. Allen was employed as a factory knitter and a private secretary until the early twentieth century, when he became increasingly known for his motivational writing. His 1903 work As a Man Thinketh earned him worldwide fame as a prophet of inspirational thinking and influenced a who's-who of self-help writers, including Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, and Norman Vincent Peale. Allen died at age 47 in 1912.

    I.

    Success has no secret. Her voice is forever ringing through the market-place and crying in the wilderness, and the burden of her cry is one word—WILL. Any normal young man who hears and heeds that cry is equipped fully to climb to the very heights of life.

    The message I would like to leave with the young men and women of America is a message I have been trying humbly to deliver from lecture platform and pulpit for more than fifty years. It is a message the accuracy of which has been affirmed and reaffirmed in thousands of lives whose progress I have been privileged to watch. And the message is this:Your future stands before you like a block of unwrought marble. You can work it into what you will. Neither heredity, nor environment, nor any obstacles superimposed by man can keep you from marching straight through to success, provided you are guided by a firm, driving determination and have normal health and intelligence.

    Determination is the battery that commands every road of life. It is the armor against which the missiles of adversity rattle harmlessly. If there is one thing I have tried peculiarly to do through these years it is to indent in the minds of the youth of America the living fact that when they give WILL the reins and say “DRIVE” they are headed toward the heights.

    The institution out of which Temple University, of Philadelphia, grew was founded thirty years ago expressly to furnish opportunities for higher education to poor boys and girls who are willing to work for it. I have seen ninety thousand students enter its doors. A very large percentage of these came to Philadelphia without money, but firmly determined to get an education. I have never known one of them to go back defeated. Determination has the properties of a powerful acid; all shackles melt before it.

    Conversely, lack of will power is the readiest weapon in the arsenal of failure. The most hopeless proposition in the world is the fellow who thinks that success is a door through which he will sometime stumble if he roams around long enough. Some men seem to expect ravens to feed them, the cruse of oil to remain inexhaustible, the fish to come right up over the side of the boat at meal-time.

    They believe that life is a series of miracles. They loaf about and trust in their lucky star, and boldly declare that the world owes them a living.

    As a matter of fact the world owes a man nothing that he does not earn. In this life a man gets about what he is worth, and he must render an equivalent for what is given him. There is no such thing as inactive success.

    My mind is running back over the stories of thousands of boys and girls I have known and known about, who have faced every sort of a handicap and have won out solely by will and perseverance in working with all the power that God had given them. It is now nearly thirty years since a young English boy came into my office. He wanted to attend the evening classes at our university to learn oratory.

    “Why don’t you go into the law?” I asked him.

    “I’m too poor! I haven’t a chance!” he replied, shaking his head sadly.

    I turned on him sharply. “Of course you haven’t a chance,” I exclaimed, “if you don’t make up your mind to it!”

    The next night he knocked at my door again. His face was radiant and there was a light of determination in his eyes.

    “I have decided to become a lawyer,” he said, and I knew from the ring of his voice that he meant it.

    Many times after he became mayor of Philadelphia he must have looked back on that decision as the turning point in his life.

    I am thinking of a young Connecticut farm lad who was given up by his teachers as too weak-minded to learn.

    He left school when he was seven years old and toiled on his father’s farm until he was twenty-one. Then something turned his mind toward the origin and development of the animal kingdom. He began to read works on zoology, and, in order to enlarge his capacity for understanding, went back to school and picked up where he left off fourteen years before. Somebody said to him, “You can get to the top if you will!”

    He grasped the hope and nurtured it, until at last it completely possessed him. He entered college at twenty-eight and worked his way through with the assistance that we were able to furnish him. To-day he is a respected professor of zoology in an Ohio college.

    Such illustrations I could multiply indefinitely. Of all the boys whom I have tried to help through college I cannot think of a single one who has failed for any other reason than ill health. But of course I have never helped any one who was not first helping himself. As soon as a man determines the goal toward which he is marching, he is in a strategic position to see and seize everything that will contribute toward that end.

    Whenever a young man tells me that if he “had his way” he would be a lawyer, or an engineer, or what not, I always reply:

    “You can be what you will, provided that it is something the world will be demanding ten years hence.”

    This brings to my mind a certain stipulation which the ambition of youth must recognize. You must invest yourself or your money in a known demand. You must select an occupation that is fitted to your own special genius and to some actual want of the people. Choose as early as possible what your life-work will be. Then you can be continually equipping yourself by reading and observing to a purpose. There are many things which the average boy or girl learns in school that could be learned outside just as well.

    Almost any man should be able to become wealthy in this land of opulent opportunity. There are some people who think that to be pious they must be very poor and very dirty. They are wrong. Not money, but the love of money, is the root of all evil. Money in itself is a dynamic force for helping humanity.

    In my lectures I have borne heavily on the fact that we are all walking over acres of diamonds and mines of gold.

    There are people who think that their fortune lies in some far country. It is much more likely to lie right in their own back yards or on their front door-step, hidden from their unseeing eye. Most of our millionaires discovered their fortunes by simply looking around them.

    Recently I have been investigating the lives of four thousand and forty-three American millionaires. All but twenty of them started life as poor boys, and all but forty of them have contributed largely to their communities, and divided fairly with their employees as they went along. But, alas, not one rich man’s son out of seventeen dies rich.

    But if a man has dilly-dallied through a certain space of wasted years, can he then develop the character—the motor force—to drive him to success? Why, my friend, will power cannot only be developed, but it is often dry powder which needs only a match. Very frequently I think of the life of Abraham Lincoln—that wonderful man! and I am thankful that I was permitted to meet him. Yet Abraham Lincoln developed the splendid sinews of his

    will after he was twenty-one. Before that he was just a roving, goodnatured sort of a chap. Always have I regretted that I failed to ask him what special circumstance broke the chrysalis of his life and loosened the wings of his will.

    Many years ago some of the students of Temple University held a meeting in a building opposite the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel. As they were leaving the building they noticed a foreigner selling peanuts on the opposite curb. While buying peanuts they got to talking with the fellow, and told him that any one could obtain an education if he was willing to work for it. Eagerly the poor fellow drank up all the information he could get. He enrolled at Temple University and worked his way through, starting with the elementary studies. He is to-day an eminent practising physician in the national capital.

    Often I think of an office clerk who reached a decision that the ambitions which were stirring in his soul could be realized if he could only get an education. He attended our evening classes and was graduated with a B.S. degree. He is now the millionaire head of one of the largest brokerage houses in the country.

    “Where there’s a will there’s a way!” But one needs to use a little common sense about selecting the way. A general may determine to win a victory, but if he hurls his troops across an open field straight into the leaden sweep of the enemy’s artillery he invites disaster and defeat. The best general lays his plans carefully, and advances his troops in the way that will best conserve their strength and numbers. So must a man plan his campaign of life.

    No man has a right, either for himself or for others, to be at work in a factory, or a store, or anywhere else, unless he would work there from choice—money or no money—if he had the necessities of life.

    “As a man thinks, so he is,” says the writer of Proverbs; but as a man adjusts himself, so really is he, after all. One great trouble with many individuals is that they are made up of all sorts of machinery that is not adjusted, that is out of place—no belts on the wheels, no fire under the boiler, hence no steam to move the mechanism.

    Some folk never take the trouble to size themselves up—to find out what they are fitted to do—and then wonder why they remain way down at the bottom of the heap. I remember a young woman who told me that she did not believe she could ever be of any particular use in the world. I mentioned a dozen things that she ought to be able to do.

    “If you only knew yourself,” I said, “you would set yourself to writing. You ought to be an author.”

    She shook her head and smiled, as if she thought I was making fun of her. Later, force of circumstances drove her to take up the pen. And when she came to me and told me that she was making three thousand dollars a year in literary work, and was soon to go higher, I thought back to the time when she was a poor girl making three dollars a week when she failed accurately to estimate herself.

    Our Greatest Wealth-Building Tools Reside Within Us

    How To Prosper In Hard Times is filled with time-tested wealth and prosperity building principles from some of the greatest motivational writers of all times. Authors include Napoleon Hill, George S. Clason, James Allen and others who have given us classic books on the subject of wealth building.

    The subtitle says it all, Blueprints for Abundance by the Greatest Motivational Teachers of All Time. There couldn't be a better time in our recent economic history to release a more powerful compilation of wisdom on the subject of wealth building.

    There is an underlying theme from all eight featured authors - thought and belief can either create your wealth or destroy your life. We have choices and it is the quality of the choices that creates our destiny. All the authors believe that affirming and visualizing abundance and prosperity were vital to achieving true wealth. Our greatest wealth-building tools reside deep within us - within our mind, heart and spirit of belief in a higher power.

    I do have to tell you that these early writers mention The Devine, God and Higher Purpose in their writings. Some even quote the Bible. If this language or belief system offends you, then this book may not be for you. The language can be archaic at times and very gender specific. Read past that and gather the pearls of wisdom from each author - there is a powerful reason their writings have endured for all these decades.

    Joseph Murphy - Best known for his book, The Power of the Subconscious Mind writing about How To Attract Money

    "Take this little phrase; repeat it slowly four or five minutes three or four times a day quietly to yourself; Money is forever circulating freely in my life, and there is always a Devine surplus."

    Here is a book from authors whose works are as powerful today as when they were first written. How To Prosper In Hard Times is reading for financial mind and soul. There is true abundance and wealth wisdom between these 255 pages.

    Prospering Now

    The book teaches the most important step an
    entrepreneur can take. This step is to over-deliver
    on customer expectations and to do so for less money.
    This is the not-so-well known aspect of successful retailing.
    Next, grow a fat purse via savings. Remember your
    economics which teaches that Savings = Investment.

    Gratifications should be few in number to enhance savings.
    Go light on life's difficulties so that you can carry
    as little emotional baggage as possible. Money begets money
    so put each coin to labor.

    This book would be a good acquisition for a budding retailer
    or entrepreneur looking to deliver value to the customer.

    Rebecca F. Plante is associate professor of sociology at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. Plante has written Sexualities in Context: A Social Perspective (Westview, 2006) and coedited (with Michael S. Kimmel) Sexualities: Identities, Behaviors, and Society (Oxford, 2004).

    Lis M. Maurer is the founding coordinator of The Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. Maurer has been a sexuality educator, consultant, and trainer for more than twenty years.

    If loving cheese is wrong, I don't want to be right.

    So here's the thing. I want to write a bad review because that is what my toxic food addicted body/brain wants me to do and I almost gave in and did it. Then I stopped, ate some toxic food and went to bed. Woke up and finished the book and then decided to write the truth without regards to my fight against the American toxic diet.

    I want to keep eating poorly because it tastes good. I want to eat cheese and as much as I can and at anytime. I want to continue eating luscious breads anytime I want and as much as I want. I want to eat sweets without reserve. I love butter. Cereal and milk. And pizza.

    And that is just the short list.

    And I'm miserable with my weight because of my excess and eating whatever I want. Breads, sweets, dairy, meat sometimes. But my toxic body revels in it. And I am normal, unfortunately. And I want to stay normal at all costs. And yet normal is miserable, for me, at least.

    So reading this book for the second time I am faced with the fact that in order to be where I want to be: healthy and fit, I can either change or stay the same or be somewhere in the middle. I usually go for the somewhere in the middle and then end up going back to the same, but I never really change.

    This book is about change. It is about eating mainly vegan - no matter what the other reviewers say - it really is about veganism. I have always been jealous of vegans = because it is the hardest thing a normal eating person can be.

    This book advises against all animal products - no matter what other reviewers say. Furhman states over and over that animal products are bad for the human body, toxic to the liver, great for cancer and fat, bad for humans. Yes, he does say that over and over, and then a sentence will come up here and there stating you can have a little fish if you are this kind of person or you can have some meat twice a week if you are that person, but really, he wants you to be vegan. No animals products. Sigh. NO CHEESE.

    He hates cheese. Really, it really bugs him. Not once does he ever say, you can have cheese if you are that kind of person or this kind of person. I guess cheese is really bad. Uggh. My toxic body is crying - don't stop the cheese, please. I just had a cheese sandwich - luscious bread, too much cheese, swiss and cheddar, some lettuce, a bit of processed turkey, mayo, mustard, italian dressing. Sometimes I add tomato and cucumber (to appease Furhman).

    He states over and over a lb of greens and a lb of vegetables per day. He does tend to mix things up and kind of says one thing then changes it a little then goes back to what he said earlier, so he goes in circles at times to where you are not really sure what you should do. That does sort of drive you crazy in trying to figure out what exactly you should do. But I do know this is what he really is trying to say: to be healthy, you must stop the bread, stop the pasta, stop the sweets, stop the cheese, stop the milk, stop the meat, stop the fish, stop oils, stop diet sodas, stop over eating - just stop.

    To lose weight: eat vegetables, eat fruit, beans and nuts in smaller amounts, oatmeal is acceptable also (I think). Again, it depends upon the page.

    He does sell a lot of products on his website and they are expensive. But it all looks healthy and good.

    If you are strong enough this diet/way of life, can really change your life, I truly believe this. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is so restrictive - but that is not necessarily bad, I'm just kinda weak battling my food demons. And I must be jealous of Furhman, in some way, so the penalty is 4 stars when he probably, most likely, deserves 5.

    my full review of this total game changer

    So, six weeks later and I'm done the first stage of Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" diet. I'm really excited about this diet and thought I'd spread the word. This looks a bit like some sort of infomercial but I promise you I'm not getting paid for this, and these questions are a big summary of the ones I've been getting for the past 6 weeks.

    What is this diet?
    In short, it is six weeks of vegan food with no booze, caffeine, salt, or fat. That means no olive oil, nuts, or fatty things that are still good for you like avocados. After 6 weeks you transition to a diet that can include meat and alcohol plus days where you can eat whatever the heck you want. That's where I'm going now.

    Why did you go on it?
    My cholesterol was too high. I was slowly putting on weight and not liking the way I looked. I was sick of pretending that doing nothing was going to work.

    Does it work?
    In short, yes. I lost a total of 24 pounds in 6 weeks. It kind of blows my mind that I still don't look the way I want and I had 24 pounds on TOP of that. That's what years of gradual weight gain will do to someone I guess.

    Do you get hungry?
    Actually, no. This one surprised me the most. The basic premise is that you should eat 1 pound of raw vegetables, 1 pound of cooked vegetables, and 1 cup of beans a day. Think about that, it is a lot of food (you can also add more to that as long as it is healthy stuff). I often had trouble finishing the meals I was supposed to eat.

    What do you eat?
    Breakfast consisted of a bunch of fruit or some oatmeal a few times a week. Lunch was pretty much always an enormous salad. Dinner varied and I learned to cook a lot of different things and make extra for leftovers. I'd usually have a small(er) side salad, some sort of main entree (beans, mushrooms, some sort of fat free sauce), and some more veggies. You're allowed a little bit of bread now and then (as well as some starchy vegetables) so I never got massive carb cravings or anything.

    Do you get enough nutrients?
    Yes. This was a big eye opener for me, but I never realized how much protein is actually in vegetables. Calorie for calorie, vegetables have WAY more protein than meat. That is why you have to eat huge salads though, you need to eat more to get the same amount of protein in chicken or steak, for instance.

    What would you change about the diet?
    Some of the recipes in the book are rather ridiculous. I spent 4 hours cooking his "famous" anti-cancer soup and if I never have that crap again I'll be a happy man. Also, he kept wanting me to have simple green salads that I would soak in orange juice. Um...no thanks, I'll pass. So I bought the fat free balsamic vinagrette at Trader Joe's ate that with all of my salads (only 25 calories per serving). I probably had a pinch more salad and fat because of it but it was worth it to me to have food that tasted normal. I ended up getting a lot of my recipes online through google searches for "eat to live recipes".

    Can you go out to eat?
    Basically no. I did a few times and it was always depressing as the options were basically crappy salads with no dressing. I can get that at home. Some Ethiopian and Indian places had barely passable options but that was mainly with my eyes closed pretending that there was only a bit of oil in them. Stay home if you can manage. He mentions that some people live on this strict diet the rest of their life. Personally, that seems insane and I could NOT do that. I really miss going out to eat.

    What was the hardest part?
    Going out with friends. Life is based around food and alcohol. I figured I could plow through 6 weeks of it, and I did, but it was NOT easy. Not eating wasn't a big deal, and not eating most of the food was OK too, but not doing both was basically torture.

    Now what?
    Well, I move into the "rest of my life" diet. That means eating basically what I've been eating the last 6 weeks for the majority of my meals (especially easy for breakfast and lunch by myself at my desk at work). The rest of my meals I can eat a healthy non-vegan meal or splurge and get what I want. My weight should drop a little more, just more slowly, and then level off. You can also drink at this point. That will be a welcome relief. I'm also really glad I learned how to cook really healthy food. I actually learned to love to cook which was a lot of fun.

    Why do you recommend this diet?
    1) it works.
    2) the books is really good and educational. I would recommend it even if you don't go on the diet. It really breaks down why it works and the science behind it. It also takes a really objective look at other diets which, in the end, made me not want to try them.
    3) I was never hungry
    4) It gave me a lot of tools I can use the rest of my life to make better and more informed decisions.

    So, that's it. I know this whole things sounds ridiculous and corny, but I've really never felt so damn awesome and enthusiastic before. It was hard in some ways, as people really do want to find reasons to get you off a diet. The temptation to cheat can be intense, but I stuck to it, and feel great. Mind you, I'm dying for a martini, but in the end six weeks wasn't the worst thing in the world.

    Excellent guide to permanent weight loss and nutritious eating

    This is an excellent guide to permanent weight loss and nutritious eating. And despite what some people think, this is not a 100% vegan eating plan. It is true that the first 6 weeks of the plan are 100% vegan with no added salt, no sugar, no booze, no added fats, no snacking, no processed foods. After that, you can start adding modest amounts of animal products (emphasis on modest amounts), a bit of alcohol if you drink it, etc. Dr. F. is pretty adamant about doing the program as written for the first six weeks, and I agree with him--it's better to make a 100% commitment from the get-go.

    There's no doubt that the first 6 weeks will be tough if you eat a lot of meat, dairy, cheese, and processed foods. But if you stick it out, you'll see major changes in your blood numbers and weight. You'll be surprised at how your taste buds will change.

    You will be eating massive amounts of food--the only way this plan can work is if you eat a LOT, because what you eat is very low in calories and high in nutrient density. If you don't like vegetables, you'll need to do a 180; this program will not work without eating a huge amount of vegetables, particularly green vegetables. Again, taste buds do adjust with time.

    I segued into this way of eating from decades as a vegetarian. It's quite common for lots of vegetarians to eat the same amount of processed crap that people on SAD (Standard American Diet) do. That wasn't me, but I used to eat a lot of pasta and bread, plus eggs and cheese, and I wanted to tweak my diet when my cholesterol crept up a bit. I followed the Eat to Live plan, and in six weeks, my blood numbers were perfect. That gave me the incentive to keep it up. I also lost weight some weight, and I was not overweight when I started.

    The proof of the pudding--I'm 58 1/2 years old, slim, in very good health, take no pharmaceuticals whatsoever, have excellent blood pressure, and have lots of energy. I do not have genes on my side--both my folks died at age 66 (mom from multiple sclerosis and dad from lung cancer and heart disease) and both of my grandfathers had type 2 diabetes. Given my family history, I will take whatever dietary steps necessary to keep from getting diet- and lifestyle-based diseases.

    I must say that I don't buy any of Dr. F's products and don't follow his recipes. You can find lots of recipes online, or I just use my existing cookbooks and modify recipes as needed. Nor am I as death on added fat as he is. Vegetables sauteed in a little bit of good olive oil simply taste a zillion times better than water-sauteed vegetables. My feeling is that if a bit of olive oil will keep someone eating all the vegetables that this plan requires, go for it. Since I've never been overweight, I allow myself more leeway on fats than Dr. F. does, but I'm also pretty active (lots of walking, yoga, etc.). Most of my fat intake is from avocados and a few nuts. I do not use oceans of oil when I saute; just a modest amount adds a lot of flavor. Or, you can water saute or steam the vegetables and toss them with a bit of oil right before serving.

    My overall eating plan is pretty simple: breakfast is usually a green smoothie, or some oatmeal or muesli (raw rolled oats soaked overnight in almond milk with added fruit). Lunch is a stew of vegetables, beans, and greens; I alter the ingredients and the spices so sometimes it's Indian, sometimes Italian, etc. I make a big batch of it on Sunday and eat it throughout the week. I also have about 1/3 cup plain yogurt with hemp seeds, and an apple or pear for "dessert". Dinner is usually soup and a salad, or hummous and tabouli, or some other vegan entree. with fruit for dessert if I want it. I do not snack, so when mealtime comes around, I'm hungry and the food tastes great. I wouldn't do this if I didn't really enjoy eating this way ... but it took time even for me to enjoy hard core greens like kale and collards. Now I love them. I also love seeing the brilliant colors on my plate from the array of vegetables and fruit that I eat. More than anything, I love the results.

    I'm quite sold on Dr. F.'s program. For me, it really works.
