Challenging Questions For MT Students

This is the most difficult review book that I've come across. It contains harder questions than the ACSP Bor review book, NCA review book and the Prentice Hall Q and A review book. If you like challenging questions, then this book is for you. If you just want the basics and normal questions, then go with the other books. It has the explainations along side the questions on the very same page which is nice. Not really for students studying for the MLT exam but more toward MT level exam material. The new 3rd edition comes with new CD software with quizes and photographs which I found to be very nice.

Challenging but worth it

To study for my boards I used this book and the official ASCP review book. In my opinion the ASCP review book was a waste of money. The questions in that book are a lot easier and very few of the questions have decent explanations of the answers. I learned so much more from Harr's review book because on the opposite side of the page for every question is an explanation of not only why the answer is what it is but also why the other choices were not correct. The ASCP review book for most of the questions does not provide a reason behind the answer but a reference to another book for more information or just repeats the question into the explanation.

I also liked Harr's review book better because of the CD that came with it. It has more picture based questions and a way for you to customize your quizzes so you can choose how many questions you want, which disciplines of CLS you want questions to be taken from, and the difficulty level of the questions. After you finish the quiz it will give you a percentage break down of how well you did in each area so you know where you need to focus your studying too. The CD does not give you explanations of the answers however, just what the correct answers are.

The only negative I can say for Harr's review book is that because the questions are much harder I only got about 75% of the questions in most sections and for some areas I couldn't even break 70%. So you have to keep in the mind set that you are not supposed to know the answers to all of these questions (but good for you if you do!). Even with those percentages I easily passed the boards and it was because of this book. I never looked over my books or notes from my classes and after going through the ASCP review book once, never picked it up again because the questions were not helpful to me without a decent explanation behind the answer.

Highly recommend this book and do not worry at all about not buying the ASCP review book. You will sail through the boards if you use this book taking care to read the explanation of the answers even when you get the question right because there is information in there that goes beyond the question. The best thing I learned from this book was how to work through a question so when I didn't know the answer to a question on the boards exam I could work through why each possible answer was wrong to determine which answer must be right. And this book really helps train you how to be able to do this if used properly.

a very useful review book for CLS

Of the three CLS board review books I have used, this has been the most useful. Like several other books of this type, it uses a multiple choice question format with explanations for each of the possible answers provided in the question. The explanations cover material varying in level from basic to advanced and for this reason they are necessarily succinct. For this reason it may be necessary to refer to text books for thorough understanding of some topics, as should be expected in a review book. The multiple choice questions themselves are carefully writen to point out commonly confused terms and ideas (many of which I had not been aware I was confused about!). This book does not have tables of comparisons, diagrams, clever mnemonics or reviews of specific topics, all of which are also useful in getting ready for the boards, but it will indicate which of these topics the reader needs to further review. Highly recomended.

About the Author
Mary F. Hoffman (Ph.D., University of Kansas) is associate professor and chair in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She teaches courses in organizational rhetoric, organizational communication and rhetorical criticism. Her research is concerned with how individuals negotiate organizational demands that conflict with personal values. Her work on three organizations of Benedictine nuns has been published in Communication Studies, Western Journal of Communication, and Journal of Communication and Religion. Her work on how individuals and organizations negotiate the idea of work/life balance has appeared in Qualitative Research Reports in Communication and Communication Quarterly.

Debra J. Ford (Ph.D., University of Kansas) is assistant dean for student affairs and research assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing. She also teaches in the University of Kansas Department of Communication Studies. She has worked for twelve years in recruitment, advising and administration in nursing education, and has taught for ten years. She teaches courses in organizational communication, organizational rhetoric, leadership, communication theory and health communication. Her research focuses on strategies used by organizations to influence public policy, group communication processes in public-private partnerships, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has published articles in Communication Theory, Health Communication, Western Journal of Communication, and Communication Studies, among others. She is the principal investigator on a U. S. Dept. of Education GAANN grant.

There is always room for a few more good quotes!

I laughed when I read the whole quote and agree with it!! So I bought the book! I enjoyed the quotes and can certainly use a few of them. I collect quotes so this little book will come in handy for any talks that I will be giving. The book IS small and there is only one quote per page, but they are not quotes I have heard before so I am very pleased with it.

A good story inspires and motivates people to action; many storytellers are made and not born.

Carmine Gallo attempts to explain how good stories are created and inspire through the examples in this text. He makes it clear that most great storytellers are made as a result of struggle or tragedy in their lives that they turned into victory.

The author breaks down the types of stories as follows:

- Storytellers who ignore our inner fire
- Storytellers who educate
- Storytellers who simplify
- Storytellers who motivate
- Storytellers who launch movements

There's no doubt parts of this book are inspiring and that this author has proven his point through the stories of some notable people like Howard Schultz (CEO of Starbucks), Joel Osteen (American preacher), Richard Branson (founder of Virgin Group), Amy Purdy (world-class Paralympic snowboarder), Oprah Winfrey (talk show host), Winston Churchill (former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom), etc., etc.

For instance, Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) used a violation of expectations when he announced in a presentation "We have three products...The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device." He repeated these three products again and then he violated everyone expectations by saying that they were not three devices. He said, "This is one device. And we are calling it an iPhone."

Although this book is spot on with how certain people inspire, motivate, and exert a powerful influence through a great story, I did not find reading this a page turner because it was repetitive, long-winded, and the "secrets" were pigeon-holed into five different types of stories almost all of which could have fit any type of story. To me every story in the book educated, motivated, and simplified the message into something the audience could understand. The author, in my opinion, failed to heed his own advice of simplifying the story and instead crafted a message at least 50% longer than it should have been.

So........ here is my story:

I am an avid consumer who has become weary over the inferior consumer products that I wasted my money on and which have ended up in landfills. Therefore, as a hobby I decided to combine my love of writing with my desire to review products in order to empower others in making informed purchase decisions and spend dollars wisely in the hopes that they not lose money like I have.

Please note that I received a pre-release book. In its current state, I feel this book is one that should be borrowed from a library. If the story were tightened up by about 50% (which I doubt it will be), then I might consider this worth the purchase.

I really liked a previous book by Gallo

Gallo starts the book flat on his back in a potentially powerful personal story that, unfortunately, never gets off the ground. I really liked a previous book by Gallo, The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs: How to Be Insanely Great in Front of Any Audience, but this one does not work.

There are five sections about Storytellers Who: Ignite Our Inner Fire, Educate, Simplify, Motivate, and Who Launch Movements. Each section follows the same formula - a short anecdote from someone reasonably famous or successful, an analysis of storytelling tools, and a short summary. There does not seem to be much original content and the distinctions between sections sometimes seems rather arbitrary. There is a nine page summary at the end of the book. Read that and skip the first 230 pages.

The book promises to reveal the secrets that lead to the successful selling of ideas. Unfortunately, it does not deliver.

How and why “storytelling is not something we do. Storytelling is who we are.” Carmine Gallo

Carmine Gallo is uniquely well qualified to explain why some ideas catch on and others don’t. Being able to communicate effectively in a one-on-one informal conversation can be at least as important as making a formal presentation to a large audience. I agree with Gallo: ”Storytelling is the act of framing an idea as a narrative to inform, illuminate, and inspire.” He then explains that The Storyteller’s Secret “is about the stories you tell to advance your career, build a company, pitch an idea, and to take your dreams from imagination to reality…In these pages I will introduce you to some of the greatest brand storytellers of our time: Richard Branson, Howard Schultz, Sheryl Sandberg, Joel Osteen, Herb Kelleher, Gary Vaynerchuk, Mark Burnett, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, Steve Wynn, and Steve Jobs…Many of the people in this book have given TED talks that have gone viral, not because of the data they presented, but because of the stories they told. Ideas that catch on are wrapped in story…Storytelling is not something we do. Storytelling is who we are.”

This book’s title refers to one “secret” but in fact Gallo identifies 21 from dozens of storytellers and concludes each of the 37 chapters with a secret to accompany the “Storyteller’s Tools” on which he focuses in the chapter. Think of the material as the contents of an operations manual in which Gallo provides an abundance of information, insights, and counsel that will help each reader to master storytelling skills and then apply them effectively in ways and to an extent appropriate to the given situation.

More specifically, Gallo explains HOW you can

o Become inspired and share your passion
o Reframe the story you tell yourself before telling your story to others
o Introduce a reliable “hero” or “heroine” who overcomes hardship and learns a valuable lesson
o Build story in three steps (Please see pages 56-59)
o See and articulate the Big Picture before providing details
o Stick to the Rule of Three (Aristotle’s three keys of persuasion: pathos, logos, and ethos)
o Use video, “a storyteller’s best friend"
o Use pictures to trump words
o Make your story not only readable but compelling and memorable
o Share stories that can strengthen a culture
o Use words that have longer lasting impact
o Use analogies and metaphors that “work like magic”

This book should be required reading for school, college, and university students who need to improve their communication skills, especially those preparing for a career in business. It will also be invaluable to those entrusted with the privilege of teaching them. Few will ever give a TED Talk and fewer yet will ever make what Steve Jobs once characterized as an “insanely great presentation.” That is not why Carmine Gallo wrote this book. He remains determined (obsessed?) to help as many people as he can to communicate as well as they can. The Storyteller's Secret should also be "must reading" for all executives, especially those who are leaders or aspire to become leaders. Without communication in any organization, there can be no cooperation and certainly no collaboration. There is no better way to explain, describe, or convince than by telling a story. For me, that is the single most important “secret" in this brilliant book.

Link's worst book so far!

I read all of Link's novels, some in English, some in German. This latest novel is disappointing. It is too long and when Link gets into her "analyzing" mood, downright boring. She is indeed a gifted writer, however the books all follow a cookie cutter method - nearly all are situated in England and/or Scottland (why??? - Ms. LInk is German), all women are paranoid, pale, and socially inept, all men are either bullies, criminals, alcoholics, child molesters etc. Then there is the farm in an isolated location. One thing is sure in all her novels that the finger pointed "murderer" is NEVER the murderer. It must be easy to conclude a crime book if the end result is somebody the reader never met until the end of the novel - practically out of thin air.
I really wished this newest book of Ms. Link would be a departure from her cookie cutter scenarios - Very disappointed

Suspenseful and well written!

I like all of Charlotte Link's books; she has been my favorite German author for many years. This novel was once again well thought out and cleverly constructed. The characters were excellently developed, and until the very end I couldn't guess some of their connections or "who done it". I liked it a lot!

This story was written by a german author so the writing was authentic not translated. It makes a difference. It was suspenseful. The characters were smart, dealing with their difficult circumstances as well as any person would. So far this is the only novel that I have read, written by Charlotte Link. I want to read more of her writings. It am happy to have found this author.

Remarkable

Gerald P. Mallon has a way with words. He clearly states the case for the frequently forgotten GLBTQ children in our society. At the same time, he paints pictures of these children and invites us into their lives. It was hard not to get emotional when reading about the children in the book. The information included in this slim volume is vital to everyone who works with children.

Just gross

I would have to say that I found this book to be rather gross. The character is not very likable. She has unprotected sex with multiple random men.......many men....some back to back. One encounter was an old man that she wanted to like her after he had been upset because she was late with refilling his beer. Yuck! Her likely to have an STD should have been high.

I'm confused about the number of reviews that consider this story HOT (story broken into 3 series). I just find the actions gross.

Just finished . Liked book from beginning . Great read sex could of been hotter but still liked it. I was hoping for a time jump epilogue or Levi's POV
