Well told insider's view of racing over 40 years

This is a fun, informative look inside auto racing a 40 year period, starting in Mexico but mostly in Europe. It's properly titled memoirs rather than autobiography. Ramirez is generous and amusing in his tales about almost everyone in the book. He's too modest about his own role. For many pages in the 2nd half of the book it I wanted to know more of what Jo was doing and what the experience was like. The 2nd half also drifts a bit far into celebrities & parties. That plus too little introspection held the book short of 5 stars to me. Jo lived with racing's high level of fatalities in the first 20 years of the book. It must have been traumatic to take care of the broken Tyrrell after Francois Cevert's fatal accident. He honestly portrays each event. I don't envy him recalling these and writing about them accurately. A little more of Ramirez himself living through it all would give the book some extra depth.

Ramirez's focus is on personalities, anecdotes and memorable events. I don't think anyone else could deal honestly with the Prost-Senna conflicts from up so close and show such fairness with both sides. Even the biggest names here come across as regular people -- but I think it's a reflection of the author's personality. He enjoyed his life in racing and has written a book that carries that enjoyment with it.

I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much

My only regret with this book is that I didn't buy it much sooner! I'm a life long F1 follower and have bought quite a few books about the sport over the years, but this one really paints a picture and puts the reader right in the middle of it. I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much.

Great Formula 1 Racing Book

I have read many racing books and also many Formula 1 books. I can only say this ine is a must for anyone interested in Formula 1. Prominent racing events from 1963 through 2001 are described by the very well liked Mexican. Jo Ramirez knew every one from the Formula 1 team's mechanics all the way up to Ernie Ecclestone. This book is the best way to understand the very complicated personalities of Ayrton Senna and Ron Dennis from Mc Laren, as no one has described them so well before and he worked with them and also had a personal relationship with both. I will treasure my copy as the best racing book I own.

TOTALLY FASCINATING AND ENDLESSLY PROVACATIVE

I was amused by one reviewer who considered Schiller an appalling human being for capitalizing on such a tragedy. There were similar, if not quite as vitriolic, opinions expressed by other reviewers. All I can say is -- if you were so offended by the Simpson case, and an author who chose to write about it - why on earth would you buy a 900+ book about the subject? I, on the other hand, found this book absolutely absorbing. At the start I should say that nothing in this book swayed my opinion that O.J. Simpson committed both murders. This book was not dedicated to the defense. It did appear that Mr. Schiller got a lot more assistance from the defense side, but he writes a fairly balanced narrative, showing the strengths and the weaknesses of both sides. The one character who actually comes out looking pretty bad is O.J. himself. He is egotistical, narcissistic, termperamental and fully in denial of what he has done. This comes out clearly in the book. I work in the local District Attorney's Office where I live, and was thoroghly captivated by the intense coverage of the trial, as well as the behind the scenes activities of both sides. I learned as much about some of the key witnesses as I did about the key players. If anything from this book affected my outlook on the case, it gave me a little more understanding about the jury. Even will compelling and undeniable evidence (specifically the blood evidence), they were so bombarded with conflicting facts from both Prosecution and Defense, that as typical, ordinary citizens, they lost sight of the big picture. In short, they were pretty much overwhelmed with facts. As you read this book, you begin to feel their frustration. A highly educated person could probably have read between the lines and sifted through the junk to find the truth, but these people had been sequestered for months. They wanted to go home. They had had enough. I read Mr. Schiller's other book: "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town", and am still amazed by his ability to take minute facts and somehow make the story interesting. One can almost pretend this is novel taken from someone's overactive imagination. But the bottom line is - Mr. Schiller sticks to facts. He does not choose sides, and he does not paint Mr. Simpson as a victim. The facts speak for themselves, and if we don't like them, well, that is not Mr. Schiller's responsibility. He did an admirable job with an awful lot of information. I could not put it down, even knowing the ending. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that the last part of the book dealt with the civil trial, which I knew very little about. If you have already formed a strong opinion about Simpson's guilt or innocence, this book will probably not change that. You will, however, get a fascinating look into what made everyone tick, what went wrong, and what tricks drove the verdict of the criminal trial. And be honest with yourself that this will always be a compelling and fascinating piece of history, and there is no shame in having an interest in it. I recommend this book whole-heartedly.

A surprising page turner that's surprisingly unbiased!

The real reason why I bought this book on OJ was because I had a free coupon for the bookstore and there was really nothing else on OJ to buy. I actually wanted Bugliosi's "Outrage". Now I am glad that I did buy "American Tragedy". It was a real page turner for a non-fiction book!
Not being familiar with the authors I was interested to see where they stood on the matter. When it was revealed that Schiller had helped OJ write his book before the trial I groaned, "Alright, I guess we know who's side he is on." Though centered mostly on the defense's story, I was surprised to see that Schiller only lays out what happened and who the characters involved were. As a matter of fact, by the end of the book, we see the author lay out evidence that portray OJ's guilt more that his innocence.
Schiller really makes no assumption about whether or not OJ was guilty. Rather, he shows the obvious evidence that the defense had to overcome. He does not state whether the actions of the defense were right or wrong, or whether the evidence was true or not. Rather, it is as if Schiller takes the reader inside closed quarters as a fly on the wall to observe and come to his own conclusions.
This book reads like a fictional crime story and it was interesting, illuminating and entertaining. Just when you thought OJ's guilt or innocence was determined, a loop hole or damning revelation is thrown in.
On the whole, I felt that alot of the blood evidence was tampered with (whether deliberately or not I am unsure on). The defense did raise many doubts about Furhman's actions and words, and the bloody socks. I think that the hair, fibre, and shoe print evidence, along with OJ's lies at the civil trial point more to OJ as the individual responsible for Nicole and Ron's deaths.
As a matter of fact, it was the civil trial presented near the end of the book, more than the criminal trial which proved to me that despite my doubts concerning the blood evidence, OJ was guilty of murder.
Even though everyone knows the outcome, Schiller presents the book as if the outcome could go either way by the end of the book. A very good read!

Absorbing but rather long

I decided to read this book and expected a very detailed inside account of the so called "Dream Team". Overall the book exceded my expectations. It is an almost daily account of what went on in the trial and the behind the scenes details are the most interesting. Especially insightful are the thoughts of Robert Kardashian and his "evolving" thoughts on O.J. Kardashian, Carl Douglas (Cochran's associate) and Shawn Chapman (another Cochran assoc.) are the main sources of the information for the book. The events surrounding the verdict and O.J.'s worries about his security after the trial is something I never thought about. There really was concern for the lawyers' safety as well. Of all the characters involved in the dream team, Bailey comes out looking the worse. His drinking and hand tremors make him an almost pathetic figure. Barry Scheck, even w/his doubts of Simpson's innocence, looks the best without any doubt. O.J. should thank him for his acquittal. After 600 pages, you start wondering when it will end but it was necessary to make it that long because it gives you a sense of the unbelievable length of the "trial of the century".

About the Author
JAMES S. MILLER is an associate professor of American Studies and American Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he teaches a range of courses on twentieth-century popular and literary culture. His scholarship focuses on issues of public memory and middle-class identity in twentieth-century America, as well as the role of commodity culture in shaping historical consciousness. His essays exploring these topics have appeared in such journals as American Studies, the Journal of American Folklore and The Public Historian. His book, Managerial Memory: History, Heritage and the Invention of White-Collar Roots, will be published by the University of Michigan Press in Spring 2008.

Acting Out Culture Book Review

Social norms are a big part of our culture. I had never looked at so many social norms until I read Acting Out Culture by James S. Miller. Miller uses many different essays to present the topic of the social norm. The purpose of this book is to give you different perspectives on the topics presented.
This is a composition book, but this book is not like your normal English composition book. This is a very current way of looking at social norms. The reader can relate to the essays because Miller uses very current issues. James S. Miller is a professor at University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. Miller is trying to get the reader to see that the American culture is always trying to make you believe something because that is how they think things should be. These essays give the reader a different perspective on what the American culture is saying to you.
The book breaks down the social norms into chapters. The chapters are how we believe, how we watch, how we eat, how we work, how we fight, how we learn, and how we talk. Each chapter is composed of essays that are related to social norms of the topic. These chapters are arranged this way so there can be arguments between essays. Everyone should be able to relate to at least one of the stories. They make the reader really think about what America is trying to say about a certain topic. This is a very good book for a college level English class. The reason for this is that it brings up lots of discussions that allow students to really get involved in the reading. This book could also be read outside a class setting for fun. Because this book makes you think about things in a different way, it could be something that you can really enjoy.
Miller did a good job of making sure that the topics were well supported. He made sure that there were a few essays for each topic and that would allow the reader to be able to side with one or maybe all of the essays in the chapter. Miller's goal was to get you to think about social norms in a different way, and he does. My favorite essay was The Baby Genius Edutainment Complex: The New Smart Baby Products. The essay was about how parents now use DVDs, like Baby Einstein, to start teaching their children at a young age. The argument in this story was if these DVDs really make your children smarter. The author stayed on topic and the arguments in this essay were strong and well researched. After reading chapters of this book I have thought about some of the things that we do in life that are supposed to be the norm for us, and it shows you how society views people who don't fit into the norm.
The only bad thing about the book was that, some of the essays were too long. The writers make their point and then they go on for a while after that and the stories stopped being interesting. The essays don't really stay on topic of the social norm for the entire time. One example of an essay that does this is Big Organic. The question for this essay that is supposed to get the readers attention is, "Is organic really natural?" This question is a good one because organic is starting to become a big thing in our culture. You hear so many things about organic food now that you have to wonder if all the things that they say are true. This essay doesn't really answer all of the questions that you may have. It talks a lot about the grocery store, Whole Foods, then trails off.
I have dealt with social norms for my whole life. This book did a very good job of putting social norms into a different perspective. I really enjoyed the book because of how it made me think about how everyone lives by a set of rules because that is what someone says is normal. The book is very well organized and he fulfills his goals that he sets in the beginning of the book. He said that he wanted to make people think about how we view American culture, and he did this in his well organized composition of essays.
I would recommend this book to composition instructor. This was a very interesting book that I read in my English class. It brought up many discussions about what we thought about social norms in American cultures. This book allows you to agree or disagree with the author who picks the essays and the writers of the essays. Overall I really enjoyed this book.

Acting out culture

Around us all is the media. The media is no longer just books, television, and radio. It is everything about us. It has influenced the way we listen, the way we talk, and even the way we eat. In Acting out Culture, James Miller brings together more than forty articles to give his point of view on popular culture. The authors in this collection of writing speak of many different aspects of culture but what ties all these articles together is the influence of the media.
A common theme in these articles is Miller's ability to see the effect of pop culture on life's most mundane activities. He takes several articles and groups them into categories such as "how we watch" or "how we work." If one reads these articles alone the connection to the title can be unclear. But, when read together you are able to connect the articles in a very unique way. In the section "how we fight" the authors talk about fighting in different contexts. In one context he was speaking of combat while the other was speaking of arguments. He was able to see the connection in these articles. The main idea was that technology is making it possible to make fighting less personal. Miller was able to make this connection along with many other throughout the book.
It is refreshing to come across a book that questions social norms. So much of the literature used in classes is very safe. They do not question culture or even suggest that there is any grey area, rather they suggest everything is black and white.
Many text books that we give our students, especially in literature, do not allow our students to think abstractly. Yes we ask questions at the end of chapters to encourage the student to think, but these questions are just pointing them in a direction of thinking. Acting out Culture gives the student the opportunity of free thinking. Miller simply gives you the information, in the form of articles, and he lets the reader draw his own conclusion.
I think Miller did a good job in piecing these pieces of literature together. Although there is no such thing as a perfect text book, nor am I claiming Miller's piece perfect, but it is difficult to point out a flaw. The order of some of the writings may be confusing to the reader and some of the articles may be lengthy, but these are hardly flaws
If a teacher was looking to discuss social normality's or pop culture and its effect on culture, then Acting out Culture should be at the top of their lists. It is a great collections of writings that would be a great learning tool in any classroom.

The book "Fundamental of Photonics" is one of the most comprehensive textbooks in applied optics available now. Each chapter not only has in-depth of the topic at hand, but also includes a host of basic and advanced applications of the concept dealt with. This is the Bible of optics.

Horrible textbook, probably okay as a reference.

I took a graduate level Introduction to Photonics class last semester...until I dropped it in October. The professor was not great, and when I tried to get what I needed from the book, I'd instead be greeted by a few "of courses" followed by the result, without every actually proving or explaining anything.

So I give this book three stars because while it is awful as a textbook and if your professor assigns this book in an intro class you really should find another one to supplement, I could tell that it's probably a good reference book. I have another book on my shelf (the Boas Math Methods book) that is like that too--great reference if you need to remember something, not good for learning something. But I had a great professor for the course we used Boas in, so that was okay, and I still refer back to it even now.

I also spoke to someone who stuck out the class and I described the book to as "this book is written for people who already know photonics." He agreed that once he finally got to the point of being comfortable with the foundational material and the class moved into some more specific applications--and therefore he had become part of this book's audience--that the book became a lot more useful.

So yes, awful textbook, probably a good reference if you already know the material. 3 stars to reflect this ambiguity.

One stop review and reference for the photonics engineer

Just got my copy and wish I had ordered it much earlier! I find it to be much more useful than the Handbook of Optics. It's very refreshing to find a book which has not been dumbed down so far as to be useless, yet not so mathematical as to be a stumbling block. This is one of the standard textbooks for undergraduate Photonics at Stanford.

Frequent errors ruin what could have been a good text

I had high hopes for this book. The classic text on this subject, Skoog's Principles of Instrumental Analysis, has gotten unjustifiably expensive ($435).

Granger's book reads well and has about the right depth and breadth of topic coverage. It's reasonably priced. That's as far as I can go with positives. There are frequent errors, some of them very significant. I've had to make up my own errata for my students, and it expands every week.
The publisher supplied a solutions guide, but the answers are more often wrong than right. Whoever wrote the guide frankly doesn't know what they're doing. There are frequent mathematical errors, and the concept of units seems foreign. One question I just looked at asks for an answer in units of nm, but the solution guide gives it as 0.015 um. It's not just the units that are wrong, the right answer is 3 nm.

That said, now that I've put all the effort into correcting errors and making up my own solution guide, I may stick with this book next year to save my students the about $300 price difference between this and Skoog's book, but I won't be happy about it.

Zombies don't pass out candy

If you've read I Luv Halloween volume 1 then you kind of know what to expect. If you haven't read volume one then be warned: This is dark comedy at its messed-up best.

It's Halloween again and it's time for Finch and his friends to go trick-or-treating. Only this year there's a problem; almost everyone in town has been turned into a zombie!

The kids don't find zombies scary. They're slow moving and uncoordinated, and if they come at you, all you really need to do is trip them and you'll be fine. Mostly, they're just annoying. The problem is that they don't pass out candy.

While the boys try to find a house with candy, some new female characters find that they aren't as good at dealing with the zombies, as one girl gets her nose bitten off by her own zombified sister. But that's okay because Finch's crazy little sister Moochie has a plan to stop the zombies which involves a kitchen knife and their "pootie parts."

And then the unthinkable happens. One of the kids from the previous volume has been killed and turned into a zombie. He puts his mask back on, picks up his bag, rings a doorbell and moans "trick-or-treat." A zombie woman answers the door and puts a zombie treat in his bag; human entrails!!! Soon all the zombies start trick-or-treating.

Weaknesses: There isn't much by way of story structure, it just seems like a random confluence of horrifically funny events. The gray tones in this are handled a bit better than in the previous volume, but there are still places where tones are too similar and the panels don't read well.

But all in all this book is exactly what it sets out to be; dark, messed up fun.
