Darrell has had his share of difficult times in life, but he never used that as an excuse to throw a pity party. He prides himself in evolving from the person he used to be into a man he can be proud to look at in the mirror. Not only is he wildly successful, he loves his wife with everything in him. They've had their share of ups and downs, but the good far outweigh the bad.

However, just when things finally get on an even keel, he makes a foolish decision that threatens to ruin his marriage and destroy his family. In the midst of that storm, spirals another hit that almost brings him to his knees. ARTISTIC BEAUTY
By Betty Holloway
S. K. Hardy wasted no time in getting her point across relative to which way she was going to tell the story, explosively! She pulled out all the stops in getting right to the source of this magnificent story. We always know what we are going to get with this author. She never leaves any doubt as to who is telling the tale. Her consistency in her masterful storyline weaving is always on point. Her mastery at her craft is in full force and effect. I really loved the way she integrated characters from her past books so seamlessly into this story. I loved the way Darrell's clique was widened to include his extended family members. I have been caught up with him and his constant anguish, relative to his lack of family ties, from the very first time his character was introduced via this author's creative vibe. S.K. definitely put her extraordinary twist on the roll-out of emotional entanglements this introduction initiated. We, the reading audience, could actually feel the pull and tug of Darrell's innermost resistance to act upon his innate desire to be wanted instead of the despondency of rejection which he has conditioned himself to dwell during the majority of his life. Yes, yes, yes!! S.K's pen of artistic story weaving can get those passionate feelings roaring to life. Her ability to drown you in the scenes she creates is astoundingly enjoyable.

We anxiously look forward to the intricate patterns she uses to keep the storyline flowing with little regard to the ramifications of the responses she elicits. Her goal is not to only entertain but have you so involved within the plot, that you forget you are being allowed to look through her eyes into the complex soul of Darrell's character, but she wants you to become his soul. A soul upon which the everyday dust of living has been painted upon the blank canvass of his being. Feel his pain and scars of abandonment. Ms. Hardy has proven time and time again that her mastery in the field of eliciting emotional responses to her various characters are beyond compare. She does not write to live, but she lives to write, and every project she develops for her fans exposes that incomparable trait over and over again!! Whew! And she sho nuff did this with Darrell 'Eclipse' Monroe. What a man, what a man, what a mighty good man!! Nine and one-half inches worth!!

As you can see, I am a Darrell Monroe fan all day, every day. I disliked Jerra's character ever since her diss of Darrell in the very beginning when she misjudged the book by the cover. Mistakenly thinking he was only a stripper, instead of the astute businessman he was. Ever since then, she was the object of the major diss, in my book. Never warmed up to her, even to this present read. Always wanted Darrell to move on with somebody else; I don't believe I am the only one either. Besides the smokin hot love scenes S.K is famous for, her writing would not be recognizable without her flair for the dramatic twist, and she provides drama big time in this read, boomerang style. I mean mouth agape, eyes bugging out type of drama! You just have to read this book!! It needs to be doused with a fire hose!!!! This girl is on FYAH!!! And just to cover all the bases, the ending will literally blow your ever loving minds! I am still swooning!

With some authors there is no need to speak on their stellar writing abilities, their works speaks for themselves. This is definitely one of those times because this authors book is speaking loud and clear. As always, her extraordinary ability to create inferno like lovin between the sheets, along with a very well developed storyline, has very few equals. I am a lifetime card carrying member of Ms. Hardy's fan base and always eagerly await the advent of her next project. She never ever disappoints her fan base and that is becoming a rarity. Recognizing the age old adage, that every shut eye ain't sleep and every good bye ain't gone, I know that we will be treated to further glimpses of Darrell (ok, that heffa Jerra too) in future S.K. books and am so very glad about it! I highly recommend this book as an addition to your books to be read over and over again, along with everything else this author has ever written. And since I see some reviewers giving shout outs to SK about whose story they want next, I want to put mine out there for more of Justin's story. THAT'S ALL FOLKS!!

Ok

I really love this series and I'm a big fan of sk hardy. It was great catching up with everyone and reading about them and their family's growing. I love the the pattel men and can't wait for more . I love jerra and Darnell but I got so tired of the fighting between them so it dragged a little in the middle for me but made up for it toward the end and it was written with a little too much detail for me. I will be waiting on the next series.

Phenomenal!
By Faithful reader
Like so many of SK's other fans, I waited with baited breath for Total Eclipse: The Evolution. And may I say, IT WAS WORTH IT! In true SK form, she brought love, lies, deceit, answers and SEX. Did I mention sex? Whew! Nobody can write a sex scene like a SK one.

Total Eclipse focused on Mr. "Eclipse" himself, Darryl. Now let me say that Angel is my man. But, "D" (who brings the "D") is in a league all by himself. Between his temper and his smart mouth, you NEVER know what he is going to do or say. I really enjoyed catching up with their entire Sin City crew (especially Angel). I love that they always support one another and have each other's back. This book, which SK says will/may be the last in the Sin City series, answered alot of questions. It put some sleeping dogs to bed (some permanently) and brought out additional questions and problems. I really liked how SK brought in Darryl's new family, the Pattels (in ALL of their yummy, sexiness) and is using them as a segue to smoothly transition to the next series. Given each of their own unique personalities and flavor, there is going to be-WITHOUT A DOUBT some major butt kicking, ruthlessness, drama, family bonding, and what else? Plenty of Hot, steamy, racy, trash talking sex! And, I for one CAN NOT wait! I'm anxious to read Angel's series, because he is a Boss-just as sure as the day is long. I am also curious what drama SK will bring with those Pattel boys. They each have their own personality and "talents" I'm sure. ;) Phenomenal job! Bring on Hawkins! Whew. Poor Raven (or Rae, as he affectionately calls her) is in for the ride of her life!

Clawback 1
As the sun came up over the Mogollon Rim to the east, Haley Jackson lay in bed, still tossing and turning. The day before, her Sedona-based insurance agency where she was the office manager had been shut down by agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Her boss, Dan Frazier, had given her no advance warning that the raid was coming. In the hours since, she’d tried reaching out to him over and over—to no avail. He wasn’t taking her calls, and as far as she knew, he hadn’t tried calling her, either. Without hearing from Dan or having some kind of direction from him, she had no idea what she was supposed to do next. What was she was supposed to tell her employees, to say nothing of the firm’s anxious clients?

Try as she might, Haley still couldn’t make sense of what had happened. Late in the afternoon, a group of men in suits had walked into the Frazier Insurance Agency and paused in front of the receptionist’s desk. Although Haley didn’t recognize the new arrivals, at first nothing seemed amiss. She assumed they were new in town and in the market for some kind of insurance coverage. As they continued to speak to Carmen Rios, the receptionist, however, Haley noticed the young woman growing more and more agitated. Finally, sensing something out of the ordinary, Haley left her own desk toward the back of the room and walked up to Carmen’s.

“I’m the office manager here,” she said, focusing on the man who seemed to be in charge. “Is there something I can do for you gentlemen?”

“They claim they’re from the SEC,” Carmen whispered, sounding worried. “They say we have to close the office immediately.”

“The SEC?” Haley asked. “You want us to close the office? What’s this all about?”

The man standing directly in front of Carmen turned to Haley and extracted an ID wallet from his pocket. When he held it up for Haley’s examination, she saw that it belonged to one Donald Ferris, a senior agent with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“All right,” she said. “I see that you’re with the SEC, but I have no idea what that means or why you feel it’s necessary to shut down my office. What’s going on?”

“My understanding is that Daniel Frazier Jr. is the owner of this establishment. Correct?” the guy asked.

Haley nodded. “Yes, but he isn’t in right now. If you’d like to leave a card . . .”

Ignoring her objection, Agent Ferris continued. “Mr. Frazier is also a duly registered representative of a firm called Ocotillo Fund Management, right?”

“That’s true,” Haley began, “but . . .”

“Ocotillo Fund Management initiated bankruptcy proceedings earlier this afternoon. We’ve been directed to shut down this office and take custody of any and all applicable files. Since some of your insurance customers are also investment clients, we’ll be taking them all.”

“You’re taking our files?” Haley echoed. “As for Ocotillo Fund Management filing bankruptcy? This is the first I’ve heard anything about it. Besides, you can’t just walk in here like you own the place. Do you have a warrant?”

“Funny you should ask,” Agent Ferris said, producing a document from an inside pocket of his suit jacket and handing it over. “You and your employees are to clear the premises at once. You may take personal items—purses, cell phones, tablets, and such, but all company files and equipment are to remain here. If anyone attempts to remove files via something like a thumb drive or other device, they will be found and confiscated as you exit.”

When he said the words “thumb drive,” Haley remembered briefly that Millie Frazier, Dan’s wife, had stopped by the office on Friday morning. She had seemed exasperated and more than a little put out. “I had two appointments down in Paradise Valley later today, but Dan insisted that I cancel both of them and drive all the way up here to put this in the safe-deposit box,” she had grumbled, holding up a postage stamp–sized object.

“What is it?” Haley had asked.

“A kind of thumb drive,” Millie said. “I forget the real name—micro something or other. A memory card, maybe. Dan says he has an adapter here that’ll make it work in his dinosaur desktop. As for why he needed this little item to be in the bank this morning rather than later today or maybe even tomorrow morning? I have no idea. Anyway, you know how Dan is. Once he gets an idea in his head, it’s ‘my way or the highway.’ So that’s my next stop—the bank.”

“I didn’t know thumb drives could be that small,” Haley said, “but it must be important.”

“Something to do with work, I expect,” Millie allowed. “Something he doesn’t want falling into the wrong hands. How are things here?”

“Fine,” Haley had told her.

“Glad to hear it,” Millie had said, then she was gone.

Standing there facing down Agent Donald Ferris, Millie Frazier and her tiny memory card were the least of Haley’s worries.

“Before you or your people touch a thing,” she said, reaching for her cell, “I need to check with Mr. Frazier.”

“Sorry,” Agent Ferris insisted. “This warrant says otherwise. Now if you and your people will gather all your belongings and clear out, we’ll be able to get started.”

“This is outrageous. You can’t just shut us down.”

“Yes, we can.”

“For how long?”

“For as long as it takes—maybe indefinitely. We’ll be sorting through the material tonight and deciding what’s to stay and what’s to go. We’ll send a truck here tomorrow to pick up what’s going. In the meantime, I’ve called a locksmith.”

“You’re changing the locks?”

“Yes, ma’am. Once you leave here, no one’s allowed back inside until we give the go-ahead. Presumably, you’re in charge, so I’ll need your contact information.”

With the phone pressed to one ear, Haley listened as her call to Dan’s cell phone again went unanswered. “Call me,” she said when the voice mail recording came on.

“It’s time,” Agent Ferris said. “We need to get started.”

It had taken only a couple of minutes for the eight office employees—Haley included—to gather up their goods and be herded into the parking lot, with all purses having been thoroughly inspected on the way out. Naturally everybody was upset, and a couple of the girls were crying. What was going on? Did they still have jobs? What were they going to do?

Haley had done her best to be reassuring to the others, but that was a tough act to maintain, especially when a locksmith showed up in a van and proceeded to change the locks on the doors, both front and back, rendering Haley’s prized master key useless.

While the locksmith worked, Haley had continued to try to reach Dan. There was still no answer at any of Dan’s numbers, but she finally left brief messages on all three. “Please call me. Agents from the SEC came by and shut down the office. I need to know what’s going on. Call me when you can. I’m worried.” As a last resort, she tried Millie’s cell phone, too. There was no answer there, either, and Haley left yet another message.

Gradually the other women drifted away to their cars. Haley stayed on, watching through the windows as a crew of workers dismantled the office. Computer terminals and keyboards were removed from desks and left in a heap near the front door. She was horrified to see the files from her superefficient wall-mounted and color-coded filing system be summarily tossed into a collection of empty Bankers Boxes and carted over to the door in no particular order. Had Agent Ferris allowed Haley to participate, she could have pointed out that files with blue tabs indicated investment clients only. Green and blue meant the customers had both investment and insurance accounts, while files with solo green tabs indicated insurance customers only.

Watching the haphazard way things were stuffed into boxes and stacked in random piles left Haley sick at heart. Once the files were returned, it would take days to sort them and put things back to rights. If ever.

What if the files never did come back? What if the demise of Ocotillo Fund Management spelled the end for the Frazier Insurance Agency as well? What if, rather than being a temporary measure, the office ended up being shut down for good? What would happen to her and to the other women who had worked there? During a mostly sleepless night, while fruitlessly checking her phone for incoming texts from Dan or Millie, Haley had wrestled with that question both for herself and for the others. What would become of them?

As far as Haley was concerned, the Frazier Insurance Agency was the only place she had ever worked. Like little Carmen Rios at the reception desk, Haley had gone to work for Dan Frazier straight out of high school. Almost two decades later, she was the office manager and the beneficiary of a business continuation plan that would allow her to buy the business outright in the event of either Dan’s retirement or death. But what if the business was wiped out completely? Where would she go then? With her experience and with professional designations to back it up, she supposed some other insurance company would hire her, but working for someone else wasn’t something to look forward to.

Haley’s childhood had been chaotic at best. She had seldom ended a school year in the same school or even the same district where the year had started. The best thing her druggie mother ever did for her was to leave. As an awkward seventh-grader, Haley had been dumped into the care and keeping of her grandmother, Carol Hotchkiss. Not only was she an outsider in her new surroundings, she was also terribly behind as far as academics were concerned. Nonetheless, under her grandmother’s tutelage Haley had come into her own.

Carol had spent her adult life working as a secretary for a local attorney, and she had deemed that what had been good for her would be good for Haley as well. Carol had insisted that Haley learn to type, teaching her at home on an aged Toshiba laptop. She had also taught Haley the intricacies of shorthand—something that was no longer offered in high school.

Once out of high school, those basic but increasingly rare secretarial skills had been enough to get her an entry-level job with Dan Frazier. Eighteen years later, nearly forty, Haley was married to her job. At Dan’s insistence, Haley had earned her CLU, CPCU, and ChFC designations, and those had been sufficient for Dan to promote her to office manager. For years her duties had also included many of the functions more in line with those of a personal assistant. Once Dan had joined forces with Ocotillo Fund Management, however, Haley’s PA duties had been passed along to corporate hires down in Phoenix.

Jason McKinzie had insisted that, as an executive with the firm, Dan have a full-time PA in Phoenix rather than a part-time one ninety miles away. The latest of these was Jessica Denton, someone Haley regarded as little more than a BBB—blond, bombshell bimbo—words Haley never uttered aloud. Jessie, as she liked to be called, may have been long on looks, but she seemed to be short on everything else, including shorthand and typing skills. Her occasional telephone conversations with Haley reeked of condescension.

It hadn’t taken long for Haley to resent this latest unwelcome addition, but thank goodness, Jessie was Phoenix-centric. She seldom ventured far from the city, and when Dan was back home in Sedona, it was easy for Haley to ignore Jessica’s existence entirely and fall back into the comfortable old ways of doing things—and running occasional errands when needed. Regarding Dan’s Sedona-based clientele? At this point Haley knew his local customers far better than he did.

But was that enough? Haley wondered. If Frazier Insurance had come to the end of the road, would her intimate knowledge of the business and her years of faithful service make it possible for her transition to a comparable job somewhere else?

Although Haley was wide awake and had been for hours, she started when her alarm went off. Scrambling out of bed, she realized that, by now, the failure of Ocotillo Fund Management was probably not only public knowledge but a hot topic of conversation all over town. Even though the office would be closed, Haley’s sense of responsibility prodded her to dress for work. After all, someone needed to be there to provide a company presence not only for concerned customers but also for whoever the SEC was sending to retrieve the Bankers Boxes packed with files.

Dressed and with her makeup on, Haley headed for the kitchen, where she turned on the coffeepot and prepared to make the oatmeal that Gram insisted on having for breakfast summer and winter. While waiting for the water to boil, Haley switched on the television set in the living room, coming into the news broadcast just as someone mentioned Ocotillo Fund Management. By the time the segment was over, Haley was frozen in her grandmother’s recliner and on the verge of hyperventilating. The broadcast moved on to a commercial break, but Haley stared unseeing at the figures on the screen with a storm of questions flashing through her mind. How had this happened? And would her office be able to weather the storm.

By the time Haley staggered back into the kitchen, the water in the saucepan had mostly boiled away. As she started over on the oatmeal, she recalled one bit from the broadcast that had hit her especially hard—the quote from an unnamed source, reportedly a former OFM employee, who claimed that the bankruptcy proceedings had come as a complete surprise to everyone.

That couldn’t be true, Haley realized. Dan must have known. Had to have known. She had worked with the man long enough that she understood his moods, both good and bad. It seemed to her that he’d been in a dark place recently—for the past several months, anyway. Now with the bankruptcy issue out in the open, she thought she understood why. He must have realized that there was trouble brewing with the SEC. Still, it hurt more than Haley could fathom that this man she had trusted so completely—someone who had been the only thing close to a father figure in her life—hadn’t confided in her or given her so much as a single word of warning that disaster was looming. It was one thing for him to do that to relative strangers, but how could he do that to her?

The oatmeal was almost ready to serve when she heard the click, click, click of her grandmother’s walker coming down the hall. Haley reached for the remote to silence the TV set.

“Morning,” Gram said, easing herself onto her chair and placing her walker off to the side. “Don’t bother turning it off,” she added. “I was watching the news in my room before I came out. Have you heard from Dan?”

Haley shook her head. “Not a word.”

“Asshole,” Gram muttered as Haley placed a cup of coffee and a bowl of steaming oatmeal in front of her. “You’d think he’d at least have the decency to call you back.”

“You’d think,” Haley agreed, taking her own seat.

Despite whatever pitfalls the coming day might hold, Haley couldn’t help smiling at her grandmother’s plainspoken opinion, but then, Carol Hotchkiss had never been one to hold back. Two years ago, Haley’s mother had dropped by for an unexpected and unwelcome visit, making her first appearance after an almost thirty-year absence.

“You don’t give a rat’s ass about either one of us,” Grandma C. had told her errant daughter. “You may think you can show up after all these years and hope to hang around long enough for me to die so you can pick my bones. Well, my dear, you’ve got another think coming. Haley and I are doing just fine without you, thank you very much, so get the hell out of here and don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out.”

Haley’s mother had left and hadn’t come back. A few months later Gram had suffered a stroke. She had made what her doctors said was a remarkable recovery for someone in her mideighties, but ongoing mobility issues made the walker a must. Without Haley there to look after her, Carol would have had to go into some kind of assisted care situation. Had Haley been married with kids, it might have been a different story, but as things stood, she didn’t begrudge the fact that their caregiving roles—that of guardian and ward—were now totally reversed. It was a debt Haley was happy to repay. After all, Gram had been Haley’s safe harbor once, and now Haley was hers.

“Looks like you’re dressed for work,” Gram observed a few moments later. “I thought you told me that the office would be closed today. Are you still going in?”

Haley nodded. “Someone needs to be there.”

“Dan’s the one who should be putting in an appearance, not you,” Grandma C. groused. “After all, he’s the one who went overboard for Jason McKinzie in the first place. Where do you suppose Dan is? And where’s Jason McKinzie, for that matter? According to what they said on the news there’s a possibility that he’s fled the country. For all we know, somebody may have slapped Dan’s ass in jail. From the sound of it, deservedly so.”

The thought of Dan’s being in jail somewhere had occurred to Haley as well. That would explain why Dan hadn’t called her back, but Millie hadn’t returned her calls, either. Why not?

Haley’s phone rang just then. Hoping it was Dan, she answered on the first ring, but the caller turned out to be Carmen Rios.

“Have you heard anything?” Carmen asked anxiously. “Are we supposed to come to work today or not?”

“I haven’t heard otherwise,” Haley said, “so I’m assuming the office is still closed.”

“Do you want me to call and change the message on the answering machine?” Carmen asked.

“Good thinking,” Haley said. “Say that the office is temporarily closed and that messages left on the machine will be returned as soon as possible. Can you monitor the messages from off-site?”

“Sure, why?”

“I’m afraid that the voice mail box will be overwhelmed. If you could keep track of messages—writing them down if not necessarily replying to them—I’d really appreciate it. That way we’ll be able to get back to them eventually. If people keep getting messages that the mailbox is full, it’ll be that much worse.”

“Sure thing,” Carmen said. “I’ll be glad to. I saw what they said on TV,” she added. “It sounds bad.”

“Yes, it does,” Haley agreed. “We just have to keep the faith. I’ll call you if anything changes.”

Leaving half her oatmeal uneaten, Haley stood up and began clearing the table. “The fact that people have lost their money isn’t your fault, you know,” Gram said, “so don’t hold yourself responsible.”

“But I am responsible for some of them,” Haley countered. “Over the years I’ve sent plenty of Frazier Insurance customers over to the investment side.”

“It’s still not your fault,” Gram insisted. “You’re not the one who ran the company into the ground. Somebody else did that.”

With tears springing to her eyes, Haley hurried across the room to give her grandmother a quick hug.

“Thank you,” she whispered. “You’re the best.”

Realizing that television crews might be present at the office, once Haley finished loading the dishwasher, she went back into the bedroom and changed into something dressier. It was while she was taking another crack at her makeup when Haley thought again about her conversation with Millie Frazier on Friday morning, the one about the memory card that was probably, even now, hidden away in Dan and Millie’s safe-deposit box.

Haley remembered the part about it containing something from work that Dan didn’t want to fall into the wrong hands. When Agent Ferris had shown up at the office, issuing orders and laying down the law about the search, he had mentioned thumb drives specifically, but presumably the ones in question had been thumb drives on the premises rather than somewhere else. And whose hands exactly constituted the “wrong” ones? Maybe Agent Ferris himself was on the wrong side of that equation.

Finished retouching her makeup, Haley reached for her purse and key ring. And there it was—the third key to Dan and Millie’s safe-deposit box. Dan and Millie had given her the key when they had named her to be the executrix of their wills. They had entrusted her with the key along with the expectation that she would faithfully carry out their wishes. For right now and until she heard otherwise, that memory card was safe with her as well.

are invested with a good friend and businessman
By TUCSON ROBERT
CLAWBACK, an Ali Reynold’s novel by J.A. Jance, starts at a fast pace. Ali’s parents, Bob and Edie Larson, are recent retirees after years of owning and operating the Sugarloaf Restaurant in Sedona, Arizona. The money from the sale of the restaurant, their life savings, are invested with a good friend and businessman, Dan Frazier, owner of an insurance and investment firm, Ocotillo Fund Management. Unfortunately, the OFM went belly up as a result of a Ponzi scheme perpetrated upon the firm with an apparent loss of all funds and leaving many in Sedona and the surrounding area dead broke. Bob Larson drives to his friend’s house to find out what can be done to retrieve their savings. Upon arrival at the Frazier home he finds Dan bleeding from stab wounds and his wife, Millie, also near death from stab wound trauma. Bob renders first aid and calls 911. Because of his blood soaked shirt and a bloody knife found in his Bronco, Bob is quickly taken into custody by two rookie patrolmen and interrogated by a vindictive and not-so-bright detective. But not to worry. Ali’s husband, B. Simpson, owner of High Noon Enterprises and his band of computer hacking sleuths are on the case. There seems to be nothing B. and his dedicated company hackers can’t break into to solve the Ponzi connivance. One of the heroes of this adventure is a young Asian American employee of High Noon, Camilla Lee, whose lifelong ambition is to become a forensic detective. She is a key part of the story and one of the most interesting new characters introduced by the author in some time. Clawback is my 53rd J.A. Jance novel. I speed-read most novels. I read Jance novels much slower savoring every word and thought and hoping the story won’t end too soon. I recommend this exciting novel and give it a rating of 5 out of 5-stars.

Ali Reynolds is back!
By debbiejo
Ali Reynolds is back with a bang. When her father ends up as the prime suspect in a double homicide, Ali knows it's up to her and her husband, B's, security firm, High Noon Enterprises, to ferret out the truth. While Bob certainly had a motive for wanting Dan Frazier dead, the police aren't really looking at anyone else. True, Bob was covered in blood, the victims' blood, when the first squad car arrived at the scene, and they later found what they believed to be the murder weapon in Bob's car. However, Bob wasn't the only one with reason to hold a grudge against Dan Frazier, his investment broker. Others had lost money in Dan's Ponzi scheme as well, making the list of possible suspects seemingly endless in this case. Ali knows she has her hands full so she calls upon Stu and Cami, employees of High Noon, to help her out.

This was an excellent mystery/thriller. One of the things I enjoy about this series is the diversity of the characters. They aren't your normal every day, run-of-the mill type people you usually find in this type story. Ali is quite well off and even has a majordomo working for her. She is married to B, who is younger than her and who has built up a very successful business that causes him to travel a lot. Stu has Asburgers and is a computer whiz and Cami, who is part Chinese, has two degrees and is a black belt in Krav Maga. Although her chief role is keeping an eye on Stu and running the office, it was a treat to see her actively involved in this investigation. I hope the author will continue to broaden her horizon in future books.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more in the series. Definitely recommend.

NEW FLAVOR…….NOT JUST PLAIN OLD VANILLA
By Matilda de Nada
Through the years, Ali's parents have played minor roles as far as reader's audience is concerned. In this adventure; however, they are out in front and full focus. You will learn to love Bob and Edie as they fight for Bob's freedom and their life savings.

Extremely upset and angry over learning that the firm that they had put over $1,000,000.00 of their life savings into had been closed down, Bob goes to the home of the friend that had recommended the firm as a good investment haven. He is devastated and angry and intends to confront the friend in person. What he found when he arrived at the friend's home, and what he did there, proved to be even more upsetting. In fact, it got Bob into a heap of trouble with the law. He is not treated very kindly by the police officers, and his family is unaware of the pickle that Bob has gotten into. Like real people, their minds begin exploring the “what if” when one is missing…..like accidents, injury etc. It's a humiliating experience for Bob, but entertaining for the reader.

The very creative, sophisticated and highly technical security firm, High Noon, owned by Ali and her husband B. get involved in locating the missing Bob. Then they are out to prove Bob's innocence of the crime for which he has been named chief suspect. The firm, along with Bob and Edie are also determined to learn what happened to all of the missing money which belonged to lots of investors..not just Bob and Edie.

This is a fun story, and Ms. Jance does a great job keeping readers intrigued in the tale as it continues to evolve. The characters are three-dimensional, witty, realistic and fun. New characters show up as well as lovable, old faithful ones returning. Camilla, alias Cami, was introduced as a new High Noon employee in a recent novella entitled No Honor Among Thieves. Cami is playing a real diva in this read, and she is spunky, creative and a real hoot which adds up to a whole lot of fun. She provides some wit that makes the narrative more fun than just a plain old vanilla mystery. Cami's character is well-developed, and she becomes the dynamic personality that everyone would like to know. She plays a major role in this story, and hopefully she will in the future as well.

The very graphic vistas flow smoothly allowing the reader to see clearly what is happening from one moment to the next. There are a few gory scenes and heart-stopping moments, and some very tender ones as well. The story is not without humor. The personality of Stu just might cause a chuckle or two and Cami's memories of her family might create yet another giggle. This is a mini thriller that’s packed with surprise and intrigue and will make the cogwheels of a reader’s mind whirl slowly as times and faster as the storyline accelerates.

The plot has enough twists and turns to clench the reader's interest, and is fairly fast paced; however, it is without a whole spiel of surprises. Ali, Cami, and Bob all manage to get themselves into predicaments that holds some suspenseful moments for them while also serving as a riveting reader's delight.

Try it. You just might like it. I would not recommend all of Ms. Jance's books; however, I would suggest this one if you like suspense with a tinge of mystery and a scattering of thriller combined to make for a pleasing reader's confection.

Review
“Practically every paragraph has a line or two that demands to be read aloud to the mirror, tattooed on foreheads, carved on tombstones.”–Rob Sheffield,Rolling Stone

“Morrissey is a pop star of unusual writing talent.”–The New York Times

“As I floated, unmoored, Morrissey would drop in a single masterfully executed sentence. He’s a writer with a gift that he bends to bizarre use.”–Sasha Frere-Jones,The New Yorker

“[Morrissey] is at his very best as he conveys what it was, and is, to be a youth lifted free by the sense of possibilities glimpsed in pop music and films and TV and poetry. He also writes as though he has a clear sense that Autobiography could provide the same kind of beacon, the same kind of life raft, for its most impressionable readers as he found in others. And that’s exactly how he should write, for one of the main reasons Morrissey matters as he does is because he has always been that kind of artist.”–GQ

“Rancorous, rhapsodic, schizophrenic: Autobiography delivers a man in full” –Andrew Male,Mojo

“A wonderfully entertaining read.”–Daily Mirror

“Morrissey's Autobiography is brilliant and relentless. Genius, really.”–Douglas Coupland

“This is the best book ever. Like ever.”–Wonderland

“The Best Music Biog Ever ... In the world of rock autobiographies, Morrissey's is nigh-on perfect.”–NME

US edition is bowdlerized - don't buy it!
By Joe S.
Google it - the US edition has details of Morrissey's personal life edited out - details that were apparently deemed likely to upset American readers, who (even when looking to read Morrissey's autobiography) are apparently likely to be offended by discussion of homosexuality. I returned mine and will be buying the British edition. Scandal.

The Public Will Forgive Anything Except Genius
By Byron
100 pages in and so far it has mostly been pretty harrowing descriptions of the casual brutality of post-war working class life and soul-crushing 'education' in northern England alternating with some of the best writing about what music can do to a human being, MEAN to a human being, ever written.

It has its flaws in that it is clearly penned by a self-taught Irish/northerner from a ravaged, poverty-stricken, red-brick wasteland, and as such has not the slickness and sheen of journalistic prose. A trustworthy editor may have improved a number of passages here and there. He likes alliteration a little too much, which I've never been fond of, & which gives the average sentence a strange sing-song quality and structure all its own. There is no way in hell this book was ghostwritten.

But then this is the books greatest strength, too. As with his passions, his politics, his sexuality, he is not 'this' or 'that', does not belong 'here' or 'there', he exists between the temporary meaning of all those words, all those labels, and it is this place he steadfastly attempts to write from in trying to explain himself and the felt experience of his life. That he achieves at all in this impossible mission would be enough for me to want to recommend the book to everyone I know, but that he makes his stand with such humour, passion and courage makes me want to press it into the hands of anyone with half a heart left to feel.

I thought at first, when I saw that it was going to be put out as a Penguin Classic that this was just another of Morrissey's whimsical appropriations of the things he loves, like getting EMI to reopen the "His Master's Voice" label up again just for him. But having got only a fifth of the way in, it seems eerily prophetic, as this is a truly great autobiography, and its very existence in the physical world feels momentous, like finding the lost journals of Lord Byron or Oscar Wilde.

Human, all too human, but worth more than a thousand of his detractors even now, the man's a national - no, international - treasure. As history shall duly record.

Challenging... But Did We Expect Any Less?
By dancinhomer
I thought quite a bit about what I would say. Critiquing someone's autobiography is critiquing someone's assessment of their own life, and that hardly seems fair. Still, we're being asked to plunk down some cash to read it, so I'll try to be as objective as I can.

This is unusually written in the present tense, and I quickly grew to enjoy it. It made me feel as if I were along for the ride and living the experiences with Morrissey. However, things would often veer off (as life itself tends to do) and conversations or situations would pop up seemingly out of nowhere and I'd be left going backwards in the book to see what I had missed. Still, I enjoyed Morrissey's style.

Without judging the man, let me say this: Readers who say that there wasn't enough content devoted to The Smiths have a valid point. It's not that this period was ignored, and it accounts for around 10 percent of Morrissey's life thus far so Morrissey may have thought it didn't deserve a huge percentage of the book. But, like other fans, I felt that this period didn't deliver as much about his experiences with The Smiths as I would have liked. I recognize that Morrissey has license to choose how to tell his own story, but that was what I was most anticipating and found myself feeling a bit short-changed.

However, a considerable amount of time was spent discussing the lawsuit between Moz and Mike Joyce, which was clearly a painful recollection. I, for one, found it enlightening to hear his side of the story. And this helped me understand why a Smiths reunion will never happen. People may say mean things about Moz because of his unwillingness to reunite, but when seeing his perspective on what happened, I can understand why he feels like he has given them enough. Yes, it's the fans who suffer (and I'm one of them), but I can understand why he just can't hand these guys another payday.

To be fair, and this may be a cultural thing, but even in his autobiography, Morrissey seems surprisingly distant. For someone who conquered the world with his heart on his sleeve, this rather surprised me. But, more often than not, the reader will be given facts with a minimum of feelings. Perhaps Moz feels like he says it all in his songs. Given the events he described, a reader can see why he might be slow to trust anyone. I don't know if everything in the book is 100% accurate, but if this was his reality as he saw it, he has every right to be suspicious of the world.

In short (although it's probably too late for that), some people will find Moz to be rather judgmental and aloof. Others will see someone who has paid a dear price for success.

So, I would recommend it, but don't expect to get everything you might want from it. You'll walk away with a better understanding of Moz, for better or worse.

About Time: A First Look at Time and Clocks, by Bruce Koscielniak

“[An] impressive history of timekeeping.”—Horn Book

Bruce Koscielniak, in this Common Core text exemplar, tells the intriguing story of the many years spent tinkering and inventing to perfect the art of telling time. When time itself was undefined, no one knew the difference between a minute, an hour, and a day. Then people started creating tools to measure time. First they used the sun, the moon, and the water, but soon after people began using their knowledge about the natural world to build clocks and to create calendars made up of months and years. Centuries later, we have clocks and calendars all around us!

This title has been selected as a Common Core Text Exemplar (Grades 4-5, Informational Texts)

Nice Book!
By Paige H
I had a project about time. I couldn't find in good books till I found this book. It explains all about clocks and time. I think the only con was how small the lettering was when I read it but still a awesome book!

Adult Autistic Son Loves it!
By Mom Almighty
My adult son is autistic and really plugged into time, clocks, weather, etc. I wanted to find something about time and clocks that was on his reading comprehension level -- yet not for "little kids." This was a hit when he opened it up Christmas morning. He picks it up all the time to read. The illustrations are great also.

suspenceful
By SRG
I just finished reading this and had to write this review on this book. This book was even more suspenseful than the first one. I knew some of the things had to happen in this book. I knew Trevor would find her and it was not going to be good. I loved her courage. I bought this after I finished reading the first book. At first I wasn't going to and pick a book I already had but as. I read the last sentence I didn't waste anytime a couple minutes later I was reading this book because I had to find out how the story ends and what would happen to Trevor. I like this book a little better than the first. If you got the first story about Lily then spend the money and get this one also. I'm glad I did or I would be thinking for a long time what happened.

Absolutely nothing inappropriate
By redjessa
This review is actually for this book and its predecessor, He Loves Me Not. The author doesn't have a great writing style and the characters lack dimension but she does have a really good idea of how difficult it can be to escape from an abusive relationship; I know because it took me 18 years to get out of mine. The conflicting emotions that the heroine experiences are true to life. People who have never been victims of abuse often find it difficult to understand what makes it so hard to leave and once you do leave, why it's so hard to not go back and the author manages to capture, in a small way, those particular emotional conflicts. The heroine, in my opinion had things much too easy. She doesn't suffer from financial difficulties which makes her escape much simpler. Most abuse victims don't have the luxury of their own vehicle or a nice fat $100k bank account to live on, nor the luxury of being able to sell a deceased parent's home to add to that bank account. I had to laugh a little when Lily/Kate effortlessly drove away from Reno with no fear of running out of gas money, forked out money to rent a home, walked into a Doctor's Office and paid cash for her appointments and casually stopped by Wal-Mart to purchase a brand new crib and baby clothes...if only it was really that easy! They're not terrible books, but they're not great either. They're easy reads, and it only took me a few hours to get through each of them, although I never had a problem putting either of them down. I'll probably read more from this author because her books are inexpensive and have absolutely no profanity or inappropriate sexual passages and that is refreshing. These would probably be good books for older teenage girls to read to teach them to pay attention to the red flags they will most certainly see when they are dating.

Disappointed
By Margaret Heagy
The main character Lilly/Katy never grows. Keeps making stupid decisions that puts her child at risk. Wish I hadn't wasted my money giving this writer second chance.

Winner, 2015 IACP Cookbook Award: Chefs and Restaurants

Winner, 2015 James Beard Cookbook Award: Cooking from a Professional Point of View

About the Author
Nicolaus Balla and Cortney Burns are the co-chefs and couple behind the beloved San Francisco Mission District eatery Bar Tartine (sister restaurant to Tartine Bakery). They are fiercely loyal to using local produce and to making anything and everything by hand. Nick was born in Michigan but spent some of his childhood in New York, moved to Hungary for part of high school, went to culinary school, and then traveled extensively in Japan while learning to make hand-crafted ingredients. Cortney grew up in Chicago, spending time in Nepal and India studying the Tibetan language and cultural anthropology. She worked for years cooking in restaurants, spending her free time learning the preservation techniques of past generations from old cookbooks, memoirs, and family histories. They both ended up in San Francisco, drawn by the talent of the chefs and farmers in the Bay Area. Their cooking is a product of the foods they grew up eating with their families in the Midwest and that they have experienced during their travels abroad. Bar Tartine has been featured in Men's Health, USA Today, InStyle, Bon Appétit, Travel + Leisure, Wired, and Food & Wine among other top local and national outlets.

Chad Robertson is San Francisco–based cofounder of Tartine Bakery and Bar Tartine, and coauthor of Tartine and author of Tartine Bread and Tartine Book No. 3, which he also photographed.

Read for a cooking fantasy, not for a cookbook
By Susan M
Reading this book, for me, is akin to a middle-aged, every-other-weekend hiker with an aching knee reading a book about how to climb Mt. Everest. That hiker may really, really enjoy reading that book. And her hiking experiences may allow her to greatly appreciate all of the work that goes into climbing Mt. Everest, but the truth is, she will never, ever climb that mountain!

Bar Tartine is a lovely book. The photographs are stunning. The recipes are creative and complex. I might, someday, try one of them.

I will not be making any of these recipes anytime soon for a few reasons. As I'm sure the other reviews have mentioned again and again, each recipe calls for one or more ingredients that one must prepare using the techniques section that comprises the first half of the book. These ingredients are brined, pickled, smoked, dried, powdered, smoked, burnt, smoked then powdered...etc. I just do not have enough refrigerator space to devote to 10+ vats of various foods, in various stages of being transformed from simple to delicious. I live in Europe, and the fridges here tend to be small (note to any Europeans reading this, none of the things in this book will fit in your fridge, but if you are a native European, you may be braver than I when it comes to not refrigerating things). Also, only one person that I know in my town owns a gas oven, and it is the kind without a pilot light, so all of those dried food recipes are out.

The other thing is, for all of the time spent on techniques, there is very little information about how to use the resulting pickles and powders and sauces, other than in other equally daunting recipes at the end of the book. I might be persuaded to cook heads of garlic at 130F in my rice cooker for 3 WEEKS if there was a list of more than three ways in which I could actually use black garlic.

All of that said, I will never climb Mt. Everest, but I do occasionally enjoy reading books about this feat. Hence, 4 stars for an interesting and engaging book about cooking techniques that I will likely never use.

Inspiring, Uncompromising Cookbook
By Stephen Foster
The philosophy behind this book is immediately apparent: the first 150 pages contain recipes for ingredients, not dishes. But what ingredients! Goat cheese, pork fat chile oil, rice vinegar, Brussels kraut, fig leaf syrup, mushroom broth, karasumi/bottarga(!) An entire other category is powders - onion, garlic, yoghurt, rice koji, kale, parsnip, sauerkraut - that are bright and fresh and perfect for inventive sous vide recipes. One warning though: the recipe for black garlic (put garlic heads in a slow cooker set on Warm, for two weeks) mentions the intense smell: I confirm that it can go through walls.

But back to that mushroom broth: it is ordinarily made with water and a few mushrooms, and is invariably insipid; this recipe cooks LOTS of fresh mushrooms at low temperature for hours then extracts all the liquid from them, is all. The recipe made so much sense that it was the first thing I made. It's easily the best mushroom broth in the world, but these guys also include a recipe to further reduce it to an emulsion, good grief.

The recipes for dishes, when they finally start, are very inventive and just as uncompromising. Cabbage rolls with fish cake starts with the recipe for making fish cake. The result is probably not that different from wrapping store-bought fish cake with cabbage (a pairing made in Heaven), but hey: now I can invent new fish cakes laced with (say) white anchovies, katsuobushi, or even that bottarga. Slow-roasted carrots with burnt bread and almond milk sounds bizarre, but after reading the recipe it sounds compelling.

Only after the first read-thru did I realize that - never mind the heavy use of Asian ingredients - the heart of this cookbook beats in Hungary. It uses no exotic, overpriced ingredients, and the recipes, while long and complicated, are not in themselves difficult. This is SLOW food, in the best sense of the word: some of the recipes would take months to make if you had to start from scratch. Right now is prime Brussels sprout season, so grab the book now, get the Brussels kraut started, and by next summer you'll be ready to cook with it. The authors spent years learning and developing their techniques, and are graciously sharing them with us here.

I wouldn't recommend it to everyone
By Sharon F.
I've had this inspiring, creative food-making guide for about 6 months now and it has yet to be returned to my cookbook shelves. It's probably the most original cookbook I've ever read and it has become essential in my kitchen. Yet, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. This is definitely not a beginner's book nor a "what's for dinner tonight" recipe collection. This is a guide to building a pantry of do-it-yourself food additives that will punch flavor into your food. The actual recipes, which are only about half of the book, serve as inspiration for using some of those ingredients you've charred, dehydrated, sprouted, fermented and cultured in the first half of the guide.

Of course, homemade garlic powder may at first blush seem a "you've got to be kidding me" directive if you're starting one of the recipes in the second half of the book and see it listed in the ingredients. Well, if you just want to make that particular recipe, you don't have to make the garlic powder; you can easily substitute store-bought. But if it's garlic season and you saw a great deal at the farmer's market and maybe you bought more than you can really use, why not dehydrate some and make powder for future use? I'm slowly adding things to my pantry as I have time and abundance of raw materials.

Another reason I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginning cook is that blindly following the recipes may not always yield the best result. Recipes that include a sauce, for example, often yield excessive amounts of sauce. This is a common occurrence in cookbooks from restaurants, probably because the chefs are accustomed to preparing large quantities of sauces for use in multiple dishes. Experienced cooks shouldn't have much trouble estimating the sauce volume and either making a fraction of it or saving the excess for another use.

So bottom line, if you're just starting to cook or don't want to spend much time in the kitchen, hold of on this book until one or both of those conditions change. But, say, if you mastered Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions years ago and want to be even more intense in the kitchen and truly wow your dinner guests, you will love this book. I sure do.
