S. appears to be losing the upper hand to the Soviet Union. The Shah of Iran has just fled, and in the U. S. Embassy Americans are being held hostage. The stability of the Middle East is wavering. In Latin America, the U. S. backed dictator of Nicaragua has sought refuge in the United States, and a treaty has just been signed with Panama to turn over control of the Panama Canal by the year 2000. The good old boys of the CIA are being called to task for this unsettling state of affairs by watchdog Congressional committees. The novel is fast paced, accurate, and suspenseful; the characters are memorable. A CIA plot to spread disinformation among Soviet southern republics is the brainchild of aging CIA operative Edward Stone, who neglects to inform his superiors of his plans. Stone recruits bored CIA Istanbul bureau chief Alan Taylor and fledgling CIA agent Anna Barnes, and the three of them set off to stir up the Uzbeks, Azerbaijanis, and Armenians. Ultimately, the CIA discovers Stone's adventure and scrubs the operation, leaving Taylor and Barnes to fend for themselves. At no time does this come across as a serious spy thriller. The main characters, Taylor and Barnes, are not very appealing, and the plot suggests little in the way of intrigue and excitement. If author Ignatius intended to write a hair-raising, action-packed spy thriller, he has missed the mark. His Agents of Innocence (LJ 9/15/87) was a success; Siro is not. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 12/90.

The best description of Armenia in fiction -- and much more

I read SIRO for one reason only: it was the only work of fiction I could find that had scenes set in Armenia. Even if that leaves you indifferent, this is an excellent spy novel and well worth reading. Ignatius's research -- geographical, historical, and organizational -- is superb. While his story briefly spins into something not quite believable, his underlying description of the CIA and its employees rings true. Ignatius neither glorifies nor deamonizes them, he simply recounts what their lives must be like and what he believes they must feel.
And if you are one of the rare few that is interested in Armenia as a backdrop for at least part of a novel, you will not be disapointed. Late in the novel we are introduced to Armenian character, and we are eventually transported to Armenia with some of the characters. Ignatius gets nearly every detail right, and it was as though I had actually visited Armenia, however briefly.

Another god one by David Ignatitus. Not great but good. Story really picks up in the second half. i just read it so it was a little dated, but still worth the read. Agents of Innocence is still the first and best place to start if you have not read any of his novels. His fiction is based on fact and if you read his column, you know nobody seems to have better sources in regard to what is going in the spy world.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN INTERESTING READ THAT KEEPS YOU TURNING THE PAGES SIRO IS FOR YOU. I HAVE ENJOYED READING ALL OF DAVID IGATIUS BOOKS BECAUSE THEY RELATE TO REAL LIFE EVENTS, ARE EDUCATIONAL, AND HAVE SUCH WONDERFUL PLOTS. I COULDN'T PUT THIS ONE DOWN. ALTHOUGH THE ENDING WAS A LITTLE UNREALISTIC IT WAS STILL A GOOD READ.

This is a departure from my usual thrillers, mysteries and young adult novels. Poetry isn't my thing and neither is meditation, I'm a talker! Yet, I found myself turning page after page, reading and re-reading each poem, looking forward to the next. Some dark...some whimsical, even. I could see myself revisiting these words and finding something new each time, learning more about the writer and maybe myself. Read it- it's a gift!

A new world opens...

Poetry has never been my thing. This book has opened my eyes to the experience of poetry, the beauty and sensuality and mysticism of it. I have never read anything that has raised such intense feelings and thoughts in me. Discussing these poems with a friend has shown me how different our impressions of the work are and how it can lead people to completely different places. That is fascinating to me. I want to read anything this poet writes. I feel such gratitude for having this world opened to me in a way I could access and process.

About the Author
Vasily Mahanenko is the author of several works of science fiction and fantasy, including the Way of the Shaman series and Start the Game. He graduated from Belgorod State University in Russia and currently works as a project manager.

Best LitRPG I've read so far!

In this sequel to "Survival Quest (The Way of the Shaman: Book #1)," our main character continues his journey as a prisoner in the virtual world of Barliona. He managed to get out of the mines in record time and is on parole in the main game world. He is sent to a small village at the edge of the kingdom, marked as a convict, and cannot spend more than 48 hours at a time away from it. And the nearest town is 48 hours away by cart...

This book really shines. The gaming aspects of Barliona are still present in this book. Indeed, the MMO side of things gains greater depth with the introduction of clans, more players, and the world as a whole. He is still a low-level player, but through clever use of his abilities, manages to get the attention of some movers and shakers in the game (not that this is necessarily a good thing!). Very naturally, the MC seems to be entangled in some major events that affect Barliona.

Additionally, his journey as a Shaman comes into greater focus. The potential of the class comes out more as he is able to practice his class skills. With access to the forums and wiki, the MC's personal journey as a shaman also becomes more pronounced. Will he forge his own path, or seek out tips & shortcuts from the forums?

All in all, a great book. If you liked Mahanenko's first book, "Survival Quest," this one is even better! And if you like LitRPG, this is at the top of my list so far. 5 stars!

Kartoss Gambit

The first part was about the daily grind of a MMO, made interesting through the character's interaction with the setting and him trying to come to grips with the situation. The second part sets the protagonist loose in the world, ending him up right smack in the middle of something big. The BBEG is introduced, but the conflict itself is partially personal (how to get xp and the proper skills) intermixed with what to the protagonist appears to be a major gaming scenario. As a reader though it leaves me wonder what is truly going on and whether or not the developers still control the game fully or that some AI has run rampant. That might be D. Rus' influence though... And I hope that it at least stay a game with maybe a hacker or a hostile takeover by a group of competitors/developers and not the creation of a new dimension since I am not an overly big fan of the that twist. It takes away the game from LitRPG.

Personally I like the mix of gaming elements and story. The writing style is good, although at times it feels a bit of the top. All in all, a solid 2nd part. Looking forward to part 3.

The Way of the Shaman is the series that introduced me to LitRpg books and with the second book in this series Vasily Mahanenko has continued to tell a great story. I highly recommend this and his other series.
