I’m not sure which question I get asked more often: ‘When did you first become interested in orca?’ or ‘Are you ever afraid when you swim with them?’ As I have loved orca ever since I can remember, I’ve never been afraid of them. Thinking back, it’s hard to say exactly when the fascination became an obsession, but I can remember when I was really young, about six or seven, knowing that one day I wanted to work with whales and dolphins (cetaceans). At that age I was fascinated with all types of animals, but it was cetaceans that really grabbed my attention. I was asked by one of the other kids at school if I wanted to swap a picture of a dolphin, from a magazine, for some of my treasured animal magazines. This little girl turned out to be pretty shrewd, as she managed to achieve a trade-off which saw her obtaining a whole pile of animal magazines, and me with just one dolphin picture. But I was happy, and in fact still have that dolphin picture tucked away somewhere.

A good source for learning about cetacean research

Dr. Visser is obviously a person who loves her work. She is a scientist specializing in cetacean research. In particular, she studies the behavior of orca, or killer whales. If you have been lucky enough to meet Visser in her native New Zealand or on an expedition to the South Pacific or Antarctica, you know how passionate she is about the creatures to which she has dedicated her life.

The book, "Swimming with Orca," is semi-autobiographical, tracing the 40 years of Visser's remarkably rich life from that of a child growing up in New Zealand and sailing around the world with her father, to that of a scientist observing orca in their natural habitat. It is the story of a young woman with a dream and the obstacles she surmounts to attain that dream. As such, the book is both educational and inspirational. The writing is unpretentious, honest and easily accessible, and is illustrated by excellent pictures, in black and white and color. It is good reading for young and old alike.

The title of the book reflects Dr. Visser's courage in the face of animals with a reputation as the deadliest in the ocean. Even more so, it reveals the mutual trust that has come to exist between Visser and the orca who know her: she literally does swim with the orca, unafraid and without the use of protective devices. And individual orca do recognize Visser and her boat, and come to play, communicate, and seek affection. Dr. Visser lovingly describes these encounters.

Important issues of wildlife management also get their due. Dr. Visser addresses some of the situations which endanger orca and other marine mammals including industrial pollution; keeping animals in captivity; and irresponsible boat handling and fishing practices. She also describes efforts to protect the N.Z. orca, including an interesting discussion of the process of rescuing beached whales.

The book is a good resource for learning about cetacean research. It documents Visser's observations of orca behavior, and it describes the scientific methodology required to do work in this field. Additionally, Visser addresses the issue: should field research among animals be of the hands-off, observation-only kind, or can a more humane and interactive approach be as valid? Visser comes squarely down on the side of the humane and interactive, citing the work of Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. This is fortunate for the reader: a tale about a whale named Ben is entirely more enjoyable and memorable than one about a scientific specimen labeled NZ101.

Although Swimming with Orca is her first book intended for a general audience, Dr. Visser has also helped produce a video for The Discovery Channel titled "Orca - Killers I have Known," has written several books for the children's market, and has published articles in scientific journals.

A wonderful balance of science and emotion

This book strikes a wonderful balance between straight science and the more emotional stories of interaction with the orcas. She discusses her own work, researching the orcas of New Zealand and Antarctica under more rigid scientific situations. But at the same time, she also discusses the more emotional side of her fascination with killer whales. The stories she tells of coming face-to-face with killer whales in their own element are wonderful. It's also interesting to see her acknowledge the possibility that these interactions could affect scientific data, but then also look at what she's been able to learn because of them. This book can appeal to both the more scientific-thinking public as well as the laymen - it does a wonderful job of bridging the gap between the two, a critical factor in today's world of translational science. Highly recommended for anyone with a love of wildlife!

Unbelievable...

BBC NATURAL WORLD made a documentary with Ingrid Visser about her work. What she does is unprecedented in any world less alone in animal world. I am into surfing and enjoy oceans since I spent time in wild waters of oceans. Watching her swim with such huge, wild animal in the open ocean water is way out of anything I could have imagined possible. Unfortunate that Amazon does not offer the documentary in their collection but it is available at Netflix and Vimeo. We were speechless watching how dedicated she is in protecting this magnificent creatures that no one in US is paying any attention to except Sea World... Look for documentary called "SWIMMING WITH KILLER WHALES". Bravo, bravo, bravo.

OK, but missing something

So far it has been useful in my designs. They seem to be better and I am sure the book has helped with certification. It has some very useful information. Unfortunatly, it does not have much supporting information or theoretical proofs. Perhaps this helps the non-math oriented user, but I can't imagine why a non-math oriented user would need such a book or what such a person would be doing designing for EMC. As an engineer, I don't take things on face value without understanding of why. The lack of general theory also makes it difficult to extend the information provided to areas not covered in the book. In short, I'd like to know a bit more about why.

good for a lot of EMC/EMI pains

I got this book because the boss said to find something to help resolve the FCC/CE and other world EMI/EMC compliance issues we have, and it was instantly used and had the answers we needed.
It covers power and grounds, signal integrity, and used with Howard Johnson's book (High Speed Digital Design), gives a strong insight to the PC board layout issues of high speed digital and analog electronics.

Terrible book

This book looks perfect on paper. The subject matter is important, it talks about many practical concepts, the cover is cute, etc. But trying to read this book I was very disappointed. The author has just cut and pasted some well-known ideas but doesn't explain anything clearly. Despite knowing the subject I found it painful to follow. I wanted to throw the book away after reading a few sections, but I kept telling myself "it can't be that bad, the material is fine, let me give it another chance". But the book is that bad! It is no excuse that this is a "handbook". There are many books that are not textbooks that do a great job explaining things. I feel sorry for anybody who is trying to learn by reading this book. If you are a beginner read Howard Johnson's classic "Black Magic" book. If you are more advanced read Clayton Paul or books on Microwave design.
I donated my book to the city library, but I was very tempted to throw it away to save somebody else from struggling with it.

Not so great

I am a big fan of Zectas series and loved the previous books but I can't say the same about this one. Too many useless POV's, recycling plots with tristian and Amahan is no good. I skipped and scan pages after 70% couldn't keep up with it honestly

Continuing saga

Book 3 is the continuing saga of the Main Character, Smoke. There are some negative and positive points about the series.
On the plus side, the monsters, the races and background history are quite good. The advancement of abilities is fair, but with all the monsters being wasted, I would have expected his level and stats to be much higher.
On the down side, we have some editing errors and changes in tense which did not allow the story to flow. Also, our hero plods along learning new skills, which he has not really improved. His 'private army' continues to grow, but he doesn't use it effectively, whilst he is off soloing against a Boss monster.
In all honesty, there was nothing inspiring about the story, but nothing drastic enough to warrant a 2 star rating. An easy read.

THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST! A MUST HAVE FOR THE SERIOUS TRADER!

I have taken 4 trading courses and read 30-50+ trading books over 20 yrs of trading. This is by far one of THE BEST books out there! One of my courses was with a floor trader. He stressed what I've read, heard, been taught and again in this book, systems are great and necessary but it takes DISCIPLINE. If you can develop the discipline you can be successful. You trade based on RULES. This book is so good, I will keep it for future reference & plan to re-read. It's so easy to get caught up in emotion but it truly takes sticking to your rules and discipline to succeed. Another tip the floor trader taught me, this book also outlines, where is your trade broken? That is your exit/stop if it fails. You find where it's broken at support & resistance. Plan to fail, plan your stops and the winners will take care of themselves. Also exit your trade with a gain at support & resistance. Cannot say enough good things, this book is a MUST have for any serious trader.

This book is pure experience and common sense, explained in an honest way.
The explanations are good for understanding the logic behind this rules, and even better to remember it.
A set of rules every trader must learn, usually the hard way.
If you are a new trader and can assimilate just one of the rules from this book, then you would be eating a very expensive and hard to prepare lunch for less than 3 bucks.

About the Author

Gary R. Trugman is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the states of New Jersey, New York (inactive), and Florida. He is Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV�) by the AICPA and is a Master Certified Business Appraiser (MCBA) as designated by the Institute of Business Appraisers Inc. He is also an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in business valuation by the American Society of Business Appraisers. Gary is regularly court appointed and has served as an expert witness in federal court and state courts in several jurisdictions, testifying on business valuation, business and economic damages, and other types of litigation damages.

Gary is currently the chairperson for business valuation education for the American Society of Business Appraisers and serves on its ethics committee. He was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award by the AICPA in 2011 for outstanding service for furthering the goals of the business valuation profession. Gary has previously served on the AICPA’s ABV Examination Committee, the AICPA’s subcommittee working with the judiciary, the ABV credentials committee, the executive committee of the management consulting services division, and the business valuation and appraisal subcommittee. He is the past president of the Florida Institute of CPAs’ litigation and business valuation committee and was formerly on the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants’ litigation services committee, business valuation subcommittee (past president), and matrimonial committee.
Gary is the former chairman of the ethics and discipline committee, formerly served on the qualifications review committee, and is the former regional governor of the mid-Atlantic region of the Institute of Business Appraisers Inc. He has received a Fellow Award from the Institute of Business Appraisers Inc. for his many years of volunteer work in the profession. Gary has also received an AICPA Hall of Fame Award for his service to the accounting profession in assisting in the accreditation in the business valuation process. Gary formerly served on the international board of examiners of the American Society of Appraisers. He is currently a faculty member of the National Judicial College and an adjunct professor at Florida International University.

Gary lectures nationally on business valuation topics. He is the author of several publications and courses published by the AICPA. He has also developed numerous educational courses, including, but not limited to, a six-day business valuation educational series and the seminar “Understanding Business Valuation for the Practice of Law” for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Gary also serves as an editorial adviser for the Journal of Accountancy and the CPA Expert and formerly for National Litigation Consultants’ Review and the CPA Litigation Services Counselor. He has lectured in front of numerous groups and has been published in the Journal of Accountancy, Business Valuation Update, FairShare, and the CPA Litigation Services Counselor.
Gary was born in New York and received his undergraduate work from the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York. He was the first business appraiser in the United States to earn a master’s in valuation sciences from Lindenwood University. His master’s thesis topic was “Equitable Distribution Value of Closely Held Business and Professional Practices.” Gary’s appraisal education also includes various courses offered by the Institute of Business Appraisers, the American Society of Business Appraisers, the AICPA, and others. He has taught federal income taxation at Centenary College, financial statement analysis in the master’s degree at Lindenwood University, and several topics at the AICPA National Tax School in Champaign, Illinois. He is a member of the Institute of Business Appraisers, the American Society of Appraisers, the AICPA, the Florida Institute of CPAs, and the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants.

An Indispensable Reference

Ten years ago, I read the Second Edition of Gary Trugman's Understanding Business Valuation, and it helped me learn industry best practices and earn my Certified Business Appraiser credential. Mr. Trugman writes in a plain English, humorous style, and he is deft at explaining complex matters in a way that everyone can understand. This is the mark of a true expert.

Now, after ten years in the profession, I'm glad I got his Fourth Edition. It has been updated and expanded with lots of new information, including sections on statistics, forecasting, pass-through entities, and financial reporting assignments. This volume covers everything, with plenty of examples, and I plan to read it from page 1 to page 1116. (This may take a while!)

The Fourth Edition is a great reference/refresher for experienced valuation practitioners. It would also be an excellent educational guide to those new to the profession.

Thousands of letters and messages have been left at the Vietnam Memorial Wall since its dedication in 1982, many preserved by the National Park Service as part of a planned museum collection. Palmer, who worked in Saigon as a reporter in the early '70s, found and interviewed many of the people who left them. The resulting book combines the messages with the comments of those who wrote them, and one would have to look far to find a work that stirs deeper emotions. Reading it is a cathartic experience rather than a depressing one. The bodies of the fallen are buried elsewhere, but as far as the surviving family members, friends and comrades are concerned, the spirits of the dead seem to dwell in and around the monument itself. Shrapnel in the Heart is in its own way as awesome a memorial as the wall. Photos. Major ad/promo; author tour.

Journalist Palmer delved through the warehouse where letters and other memorabilia left at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington are preserved, and after much detective work, traveled around America to interview these letter-writers. The actual letters are reprinted in this moving book, together with a photograph of those departed. Then the letter-writers discuss their grief, the "shrapnel in the heart," embedded forever. Often hard to read, this is a heartbreaking reminder of the consequence of war. Sal Lopes's The Wall: images and offerings . . . (LJ 11/15/87) is a more visual record. Very highly recommended. I wish all young people had to read this!

I read this book for a college history course and until now have thought very little about war, military, or world politics. Young people today rarely understand or realize what goes with becoming a soldier. This book gives real images of the devastation war brings from the people who lived through the tragedy of losing their loved ones. It opens our eyes to things we just shouldn't close our eyes on.

Buy this book and change your outlook on Nam forever. If you ever valued the boy next door, your son , or daughter you will want this book as a bed side companion to re-read again and again. Each story is a man lost, a mother in pain, a comrade who mourns . It paints the picture that we will be reliving for the men of Afganistan/Irag times. The book will be relevent for time immortal. At,6'3 and 320 lbs of old warrior ,
this book took me back and immersed me into the turbulent past times of my life. To damn up my tears , it would have been like holding back a hurricane because of the imagery in this book . This book is well worth the price. I bought it and will continue to buy it again and again until all those I know have a copy. America should emerse itself in the books wisdom about ours soldiers and society. We need to learn to drop the idea that all we are told is the truth and scrutinize our leaders more closely. Thanks Ms Palmer for this great and timely book of truth. Herb, I knew you at Lackland, I hope you have found peace.

Shrapnel In the Heart is a book to be read by everyone no matter what generation they were born in. Shrapnel In The Heart is a book that has letters and rememberances left behind at the Vietnam War Memorial. Some of the letters tell the story about the people behind the letter. The stories are sad, but the courage of the men and women is a true inspiration. The people written about in this book were extrememly young (18, 19, 20) and it seems like they died in vain. But through their letters that were left behind it is easy to see that these young men knew their duty and refused to shirk from it. These men and women are true heroes.

James Dauray, MEd, is a faculty member at Warren Township High School and an adjunct faculty at the College of Lake County in Illinois. He splits his time teaching biology, chemistry, and environmental science to all levels of students, including science majors, nonmajors, returning adults, regular level through Advanced Placement. His writing experience includes contributing to Environmental Science: Engaging the Issues and Exploring Solutions by Manuel Molles and Scientific American Environmental Science for a Changing World. About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

Mike has four children: Kathleen teaches college mathematics; Michael III teaches college mathematics and is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan works in publishing; and Colleen teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Trust No One

Chunichi has done it again. This was a real fast and easy read. Breeze was a ex-drug dealer who sets out to live a normal life with the love of his life and his children. He follows all the rules and even works a full-time job as a janitor, but when the pressure becomes too much he reverts back to what he knows best. Breeze started living the life until he crosses Mr. Bigg, then it all starts to go down hill. I won't say anymore just don't pass this one up.

About the Author
PETER FREUCHEN (1886-1957) was an explorer, journalist, magazine editor, and lecturer. He wrote several popular books recounting his courageous travels, including Arctic Adventure (page xx). In 1956 he won the television game show "The $64,000 Question" by using his vast knowledge of the world's oceans.

Book of the Seven Seas

I am Danish, and I grew up reading Peter Freuchen's books and tales about the man. Anyone who has read his books knows that he had a rather lose understanding of what truth means, in other words, he was not free from embellish facts a bit, and that was one of his qualities that has endeared him to so many over the years. That been said, the man had a wealth of knowledge and I would guess most people would learn something from this book. It is easy reading because he did not attempt, or did not possess the skills, to make this book into more than a light factual work about wind, weather, currents, famous sailors and navigators, ships and a lot more. Personally, I learned a lot about the currents and how they affect not only the weather, but also our lives. I can strongly recommend this book.

My third copy of this really great Sea Adventure book. Inspiring and well written Peter Freuchen has kept me interested in the sea for many decades.

A very unusual man - a true adventurer in the real sense. If you like this very well written book, obtain books about his early life. Unbelievable!!
